The time has come for colds, and overcoats.
We're quiet on the ride, we're all just waiting to get home.
Another week away, my greatest fear.

I need the smell of summer, I need its noises in my ears.
If looks could really kill, then my profession would staring.
Please know we do this cause we care and not for the thrill.
Collect calls to home to tell them that I realize
that everyone who lives will someday die and die alone.

And we won't let you in.
Though we're down and out.
We won't let you in.
I wrote more postcards than hooks.
I read more maps than books.
Feel like every chance to leave is another chance I should have took.

Every minute is a mile.
I've never felt so hallow.
I'm an old abandoned church with broken pews and empty aisles.
My secrets for a buck.
Watch me as I cut myself wide open on this stage.
Yes, I am paid to spill my guts.
I won't see home till spring.

Oh, I would kill for the Atlantic,
but I am paid to make girls panic while I sing.
And we won't let you in.
Though we're down and out.
We won't let you in.
And we won't let you in.
We don't want what isn't ours.
We won't let you in.
You win.

And the coastline is quiet.
While we're quietly losing control.
Yes, we're silent but sure we inventened the cure
that will wash out my memories of her.
"The harpoon is loaded.
The cage is lowered.
The water is red." Like you.

General Comment:I can't believe he talks about IVing narcotics in the last verse... not the focus of the song obviously just thought it was noteworthy.

-i saw an interview and jesse was saying that people reckon he writes more moeney when he is depressed and writing about his life. this line is pretty obvious in saying that his songs use life experiences and they are getting exploited by it.

General Comment:i think this song and "okay, i believe you; but my tommy gun don't" (and failure by design, a little) are both jesse's way of both hating the state of mind he has to put himself in to write about what he writes about (he's admittedly a pretty depressed dude) and rebelling against the notion that they're a heart-throb band for teenage girls (ala All-American Rejects) and not legitimate (indie) artists.

at this point in time, they were making really great music, and being overshadowed by jesse's magazine cover appearance.

General Comment:in case it hasn't been said, this song has lyrics from Archers of Loaf's "Chumming the Ocean"

    Brand New:
"The harpoon is loaded, the cage is lowered,
    the water is red-
    like you "

    Archers of Loaf:
"And harpoons are loaded, the cage has been lowered.
The mask's on, the diver is down, now.

    And they're chumming the oceans.
    The signal is sent
    I think he's in trouble.
The water is red, red, red, red. "

easily one of their best lines. It sums up the whole "business" side of the scene. totally ridiculous

Song Meaning:i always seen it as them touring and being homesick..

but when i first hear it, i thought it was about going back to school after summer vacation. " another week away. my greatest fear. i need the smell of summer. i need its noises in my ear"
pretty much the first few verses could be about going away to college, at least up until he talks about "on the stages" etc.
    then its pretty obvious.

but its my favorite song by BN. i first heard it playing while they were setting up for the used at HOB in atlantic city

General Comment:also, has it occurred to anyone that this is in some ways a reprisal of the song 'failure by design?' to a certain extent he is still talking about 'as much as i want to make good music it's so hard to find the motivation to do it, and sometimes i just want to give up' but in a much more developed composition. oh, the growth!

    General Comment:perhaps the lyrics aren't
    'we won't let you IN'
    but rather
    'we won't let you WIN.'
as the following lyrics imply. it kind of makes more sense and sounds better so...having faith in brand new as lyricists, i assert that those are the actual words.

General Comment:They dont want to sell out but just like life itself its a struggle. Heres a thought: if you want people to hear your music and start puttin on shows and you start realizing that there are actually people out there feeling the same way u do or people understand your point of views on life, then why would you stop or just not go all the way til every single person in the world hears you? (so u wont be one of "those" bands?) i say scream as loud as u want as long as you scream for the right reason!!!! AHHHHH IT ROCKS!!!!
