This song is about being so high that you can't even speak anymore. But it's a GOOD thing

For me Adrift and at Peace is the feeling you get when you wake up in the morning and for once you don't feel like you wish you were dead and you try to hold onto the moment because everything seems so beautiful and perfect, not tainted like usual but it's kinda tragic too cuz you know it's just going to fade.

This song always calms me, it's kind of [in my perspective] like when everything in your life is hellish, you're stressed out or upset or worried, whatever...and you have a brief moment where you relax and everything seems okay. It's a temporary relief, and you can breathe without feeling a burden. It's a temporary "peace." At least, that's what it is to me.

whenever i hear this song, i get this picture...

picture a massive 20-foot tall human-like robot....maybe from the future when mankind is gone. its a massive majestic being, and its dying. there is a part in the song that sounds like a machine breathing very slowly. this is what reminds me of this. it's breathing slowly, breathing its last breaths, and it will soon be at peace...

This is the song that will be played at my funeral. I'm not even joking.

This is truly a very, very beautiful song. The first time I heard it was lying in bed at a friends house, he'd fallen asleep and given me the Still album just that night. I knew that it was a rather 'calm' album in contrast to most of NIN's releases so I chucked it on, hopped into bed in hope of trailing off to sleep.

Then this song started to play and it struck me, it was so beautiful and calming. It's lovely, it's peaceful. It just brings you back to all those moments in your life where everything was okay and serene and you can see all the beauty that is really in life but hidden among all the troubles and struggles that we have to deal with.

This song would be a good one to play at a funeral, I'm considering it myself. :P It's just so... ohh. It reminds me of The Great Below, where you get this fantastic mind image of how calming the ocean is and how it can take away everything and just leave you at the center of the world, where everything is just fine. Except this song doesn't just give me an image of the ocean but of everything in this world that I find or found beautiful.

/End rant.

No other band could ever do something like this, so basic yet so effective. The Still album is just amazing.

This song is the "Warm Place" of the
Fragile Era. It is beautiful. There is so
much emotion in this song... get high in bed
during a snowstorm and you'll trip out.

You'll feel like you're completely all alone
in the middle of a vast ocean just riding the waves...
Completely... at peace.

For me it reflects the beautiful feeling of comfort a baby has in it's mother's womb, the sublime lack of self-consciousness, and the wistfulness one must feel for this absolute peace, once he/she has taken account of the real world. I don't really think this is the 'happy-happy-joy-joy!!!' kind of song. It's more subtle than that. And the lower sounds in the background give the song it's depth.

Is it just me, or does this sound like it would fit in on the Donnie Darko score?

Instrumentals are very difficult to interpret. In my opinion, they are the most open for interpretation. However, most artists have some motive behind them. Most of Trent's work involves a low melody rising to a climax about 60% through the song. This instrumental seems to work opposite from that.

XhumanjunkX hit the nail on the head. I listen to this song before going to sleep. The quiet piano parts compliment one another. The simplicity of the song makes for a relaxing tone.

I believe this song was on Still. We're in this Together Now was on The Fragile. The piano part in Adrift and at Peace is identical to that of We're in this Together.

Remember that We're in this Together Now is about someone finally feeling complete and unstoppable with a partner. Whether that partner feels the same back or even exists is not known. Adrift and at Peace might resemble that meaning in that the instrumental reflects a newfound inner peace.

I know this part is going off on a tangent, but it all relates back. I'm 18, and I'm in my 7th semester of college. The mathematics are really difficult. I had a test the other day, and I was so anxious and worried that I felt the pain of stress. I'm sure if any of you have ever felt the same way, you know it physically hurts. You can feel the anxiousness pummeling your chest. You feel it. Then, the exact minute after the test, the feeling is GONE. The absence of the stressfulness is truly a welcome feeling. I believe THAT is what this song is about. Finally feeling relieved in some way. Adrift may represent the feeling of relaxing or coasting after working hard to get up a hill.

That is what this song means to me. Anyone can clearly see that XhumanjunkX and my idea go hand in hand.

I agree with ComaDivine, I get the exact same feeling from this.
It's also this beautiful reminder of once when I was delirious on a vacation as a little kid, and they were driving me to the hospital, and even though I was so young I appreciated the love my family had for me. It somehow connects, this feeling of love, and deep compassion I get from it.
It just reminds me of love I think, like laying together with the one you love, gazing up at the sky on a summer night. Something like that.
It's beautiful.

From my view, Trent tends to associate the ocean with death. Analyze the lyrics of The Great Below without listening to the song or imagining it in your head. Do the same with La Mer. Then think of the title of this song. Listen to this song after that. You should realize he's finally at peace from all the pain he endured from his addictions to drugs that he finally got clean of before With Teeth came out. Adrift and At Peace really just seems like a "release" from his pain, or I guess, life. You could compare this to the meanings of other songs on The Fragile, for example, I'm Looking Forward to Joining You, Finally. Much of this album is about betrayal, loss, and pain. In conclusion, this song really seems like alleviation of pain through death and how that finally feels.

I can't remember where I heard this... But I remember hearing that this song was supposed to take the place of "The Great Below" right after La Mer. It makes sense since both the songs sound exactly the same.

As to what it means, I'm guessing the character in "The Fragile" has finally snapped under being under so much pressure, and doesn't care anymore... so he's "Adrift and at Peace"

Plus if you listen really closely at the end, you can hear the sound of flies buzzing...

the most peaceful song i've ever heard, it puts me to sleep or puts my mind at ease. it gives me the picture of floating down a river on a raft in absolute comfort staring up at the starry night sky.

I want to actually do that someday and listen to this song and be at absolute peace.

I think this song is about finding peace with oneself. Literal interpretation, I know. But look at what Trent was going through during that time.
