you've gotta understand
you've gotta understand
it's just a fact that you must attack
you gotta get it while you can

well, everyone's gonna be a big star
everyone's gonna drive a fast car
everyone's gonna be in charge
'cause everybody's business is everybody's business

yeah, we hope you'll understand
yeah, we've got a master plan
yeah, we're an american band for you

'cause when you're hypnotized
'cause when you're hypnotized
they'll spin you gold and paint you black
with the blood of your surprise

well, everyone's gonna be a big star
everyone's gonna drive a fast car
everyone's gonna be in charge
'cause everybody's business is everybody's business

yeah, we'll help you party down
yeah, we're coming to your town
yeah, we're are an american band for you

yeah, nobody understands
yeah, that we've made our plans
yeah, we're tearin' it down for you
for you

everyone's gonna be a big star
everyone's gonna drive a fast car
everyone's gonna be in charge
'cause everybody's everything is nobody's nothing

everyone's gonna get a big gun
everyone's gonna shoot someone
everyone's gonna ruin our fun
'cause everybody's business is everybody's business

you've gotta understand
you've gotta understand
it's just a fact that you must attack
you gotta get it while you can

well, everybody's business is everybody's business
everybody's business is everybody's business
everybody's business is everybody's business
everybody's business is everybody's business

General Comment:It also takes a few lines from the chorus of Grand Funk Railraod's 'We're An American Band'.

General Comment:Its about everyone wanting to be famous when fame isnt all it's cracked up to be. "We all want to live, we all want to crash cars"

General Comment:I think this song has more to do with something Billy Corgan knew about the world that he couldn't come out and say openly... so he is communicating with us through his music. This song really didn't mean much to me until I listened to it again today and I caught this part: "yeah, we've got a master plan
yeah, we're an american band for you

    'cause when you're hypnotized
    'cause when you're hypnotized
they'll spin you gold and paint you black
with the blood of your surprise"

It all made sense... and suddenly the song became very chilling and ominous. it was as if Billy had tried us all something a long time ago. The significance of the song being played on television for their last TV performance is easily explained when the song is taken in this context. The inclusion of it on the non-commercial release called Machina II: Friends and Enemies of Modern Music is also more apparently purposeful. Billy even threw in lyrics to throw people who might be looking for this off.

You've gotta understand... he wrote that into the song as a main lyric.

    "yeah, nobody understands
yeah, that we've made our plans
yeah, we're tearin' it down for you
    for you"

Nobody understands. We've made our plans. We're tearing it down for you.

    Tearing what down?

Many of you are probably accustomed to entertainers being mostly fluff, but if any of you are truly appreciative of Billy Corgan you will leave room in your thoughts for the possibility that he may play a grander part than just as a simple rocker from Chicago.

General Comment:I sort of see the song as a criticism of Hollywood, California, and modern culture in general. Especially in the line "everybody's business is everybody's business." It's a feck'n glorious criticism at that.

General Comment:this is the last song the pumpkins ever performed on television, and it's a fitting song. the whole thing is about how people want fame, and on getting it generally don't enjoy it cos it just hurts them. anyways, that's what i think...
