I have not been home since you left long ago
I'm thumbing my way back to heaven
Counting steps walking backwards on the road
I'm counting my way back to heaven

I can't be free with what's locked inside of me
If there was a key you took it in your hand
There's no wrong or right, but I'm sure there's good and bad
The questions linger overhead

No matter how cold the winter there's a springtime ahead
I'm thumbing my way back to heaven
I wish that i could hold you, I wish that I had
thinking 'bout heaven

I let go of the rope thinking that's what held me back
And in time i've realized, it's now wrapped around my neck

I can't see what's next from this lonely overpass
Hang my head and count my steps, as another car goes past

All the rusted signs we ignore throughout our lives
Choosing the shiny ones instead
I turned my back, now there's no turning back

No matter how cold the winter there's a springtime ahead
I smile but who am I kidding?
I'm just walking the miles, every once in a while get a ride
Thumbing my way back to heaven

General Comment:This song got me through so many tough times. It changed my life. I bought Riot Act on my iPod after the toughest week I ever had, where I was doing stuff I shouldn't have been, hurting myself and the people around me, and this song got me out of that funk. This song got me out of it, and I Am Mine (the previous Riot Act track) keeps me out of it. Incredible.

There is hope. Even the worst times end.

("Thumbing" is a reference to hitch-hiking, not guitar playing.)

General Comment:I believe this song is def. about a lot of different things. Most of Ed's lyrics are meant to be ambiguous, as is all great art. But in my opinion its trying to go home(metaphorically, phsyically, whatever)......Thumbing my way, as in hitchhiking using ur thumb, "counting my steps walking backwards on the road", the overpass stuff, almost like hes walking on a road, however i believe it is much deeper than this. Take it how you want, but damn do I love Pearl Jam, cant even try to explain the love....

General Comment:It's a song of lost youth and love. But it's bittersweet. It's okay to grow old and lose love, as long as you keep in mind that no matter how cold the winter there is spring time ahead. It makes me pine for the lost love of my youth. We choose to go our own way and sometimes we pay dearly, but there is redemption. Though it may be painful, it makes us the all the stronger and wiser.

General Comment:i agree that "heaven" in this case is a lost love...he was having rough times with his significant other and she left for somewhere that involved a big road trip so he goes on a hitch hike to find her...the lines "no matter how cold the winter, there's a spring time ahead" meaning no matter how rough things are (cause winters can tend to be harsh) all your stress and problems will melt away (cause the spring melts the snow)

General Comment:The lyrics printed above are incorrek, but the most important ones are accurate. This is about trying to get back to the heaven of a lost love's company, never knowing if you can get there again, but knowing that you need to try.

To simply lock inside you what you feel, hoping that it will go away, is not an option. Nor does it do justice even to the memory of the one of whom you so recurringly think. You can never be free that way; you smile sometimes, but who are you kidding? Sometimes in our haste to be "true" and "honest," all we end up doing is lying to ourselves, and living a lie. Maybe it is because we foresaw the temporary "rust" of problems that would be encountered if we were to opt for the path urged by our hearts, and found it easier to choose the "shiny" facade of something outwardly more stable-looking -- but devoid of substance in reality.

The song also illustrates so well the emptiness, aimlessness, and regret that take such strong hold in the aftermath of a loved one's departure. "I wish I could hold you, I wish that I had" kills me. It is not that you never held her, it is that perhaps if you had held on more forcefully, you would not now feel like a hitcher scruggling to get where you need to be.

General Comment:Isn't it about Beth? You know, I've fallen in love in Pearl Jam about two months ago, I haven't had heard them before...

What was the reason of his split up with Beth? This song was already written in 2000... I know it's not a gossip column, but I've heard from meny people that it was because his new, presnt girlfriend... You don't have to answer,I know it's a stupid question.

And the song... It's about finding your place in the world, about leaving somebody that you loved, somebody who was your life. It's about losing a friend, and now living on your own. "There's no easy way to be free".
