Drifting
In the air
Above a cold lake
Is a soul
From an early
Better age
Grasping for
A mystic thought
In vain...but who's to know
Further on lies eternal search
For theories to lift the gate
Only locks are made stronger
And more keys lost as logic fades
In the pool of dreams the water darkens
For the soul that's tired of search
As years pass by
The aura drops
As less and less
Feelings touch
Stupidity
Has won too much
The hopeless soul keeps mating

General Comment:from reading what varg has said about this (and he is somewhat notorious for changing his tune on a whole lot of things) this is the 'theme song' of burzum.

there is no hope because all of the things he believes could make the world worthwhile - magic, the old ways etc - have gone, or never existed. to trivialise it, it kind of seems like the lament of a dungeons and dragons nerd facing the hard reality that orcs and dragons do not exist. the world is not as we might wish it to be.

General Comment:That would make sense for Varg, considering how strongly he believes in ancient traditions and customs.

General Comment:It's been said that the only way we can cure the human disease is to go back to our primal ways.... participating consciousness with the environment..

General Comment:It's about the downfall of humanity, how we dont use logic anymore and make stupid decisions that in the end will fuck us and the earth over. The gate is the answer to a better life for humanity and mankind but it just keeps getting shut tighter with the kinds of decisions we make, it also expels a sense of hopelesness for humanity with lines like "In the Pool of Dreams the water Darkens" "Stupidity Has won too much" "As years pass by The Aura Drops"
Basically, he's saying we're fucked as a race, it's too late to fix it.

General Comment:First Burzum song I heard. My guess is that "the Gate" is the gate to the next life or level of existence.
