Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."
"There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
Awake
Shake dreams from your hair
My pretty child, my sweet one
Choose the day and choose the sign of your day
The day's divinity
First thing you see
A vast radiant beach in a cool jeweled moon
Couples naked race down by it's quiet side
And we laugh like soft, mad children
Smug in the wooly cotton brains of infancy
The music and voices are all around us
Choose, they croon the ancient ones
The time has come again
Choose now, they croon
Beneath the moon
Beside an ancient lake
Enter again the sweet forest
Enter the hot dream
Come with us
Everything is broken up and dances
Indians scattered on Dawn's Highway bleeding
Ghosts crowd the young child's fragile eggshell mind
Shake dreams from your hair
My pretty child, my sweet one
Choose the day and choose the sign of your day
The day's divinity
First thing you see
A vast radiant beach in a cool jeweled moon
Couples naked race down by it's quiet side
And we laugh like soft, mad children
Smug in the wooly cotton brains of infancy
The music and voices are all around us
Choose, they croon the ancient ones
The time has come again
Choose now, they croon
Beneath the moon
Beside an ancient lake
Enter again the sweet forest
Enter the hot dream
Come with us
Everything is broken up and dances
Indians scattered on Dawn's Highway bleeding
Ghosts crowd the young child's fragile eggshell mind

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,

Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.
American Town

Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran shares a short story of reconnecting with an old flame on “American Town.” The track is about a holiday Ed Sheeran spends with his countrywoman who resides in America. The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.
This song is awesome but it doesn't have all the lyrics, here are the rest:
We have assembled inside, This ancient and insane theater To propagate our lust for life, And flee the swarming wisdom of the streets.
The barns have stormed The windows kept, And only one of all the rest To dance and save us From the divine mockery of words, Music inflames temperament.
Ooh great creator of being Grant us one more hour, To perform our art And perfect our lives.
We need great golden copulations,
When the true kings murderers Are allowed to roam free, A thousand magicians arise in the land Where are the feast we are promised?
One more thing
Thank you oh lord For the white blind light Thank you oh lord For the white blind light
A city rises from the sea I had a splitting headache From which the future's made
here is the whole song
Awake Shake dreams from your hair, my pretty child, my sweet one Choose the day, and choose the sign of your day, The day's divinity, first thing you see. A vast radiant beach and cool jeweled moon Couples naked race down by its quiet side And we laugh like soft, mad children, Smug in the woolly cotton brains of infancy. The music and voices with all around us. Choose, they croon, the ancient ones, the time has come again. Choose now, they croon, beneath the moon, beside an ancient lake. Enter again the sweet forest. Enter the hot dream, come with us. Everything is broken up and dances. Indian scattered on dawn's highway bleeding. Ghosts crowd the young child's fragile eggshell mind. We have assembled inside this ancient and insane theatre to propagate our lust for life and flee the swarm of wisdom's restraints. The barns are stormed, the windows kept And only one of all the rest Can dance and save us from the divine mockery of words. Music inflames temperament. Oh, great creator of being Grant us one more hour to perform our art and perfect our lives. We make great golden combinations. When a true king's murderer has been allowed to roam free A thousand magicians arise in the land. Where are the feasts we were promised?
(After a few seconds in the end of the recording Jim says: "Thank you oh lord for the white blind light Thank you oh lord for the white blind light a city will rise from the sea I had a splitting headache from which the futures made")
"Indian's scattered on dawn's highway bleeding Ghosts crowd the young child's fragile eggshell mind"
Jim's very own explanation of this verse:
"Me and my- ah- mother and father- and a grandmother and a grandfather- were driving through the desert,at dawn, and a truck load of Indian workers had either hit another car, or just- I don't know what happened- but there were Indian's scattered all over the highway, bleeding to death. So the car pulls up and stops. That was the first time I tasted fear. I musta' been about four- like a child is like a flower, his head is just floating in the breeze, man. The reaction I get now thinking about it, looking back- is that the souls of the ghosts of those dead Indians.. maybe one or two of 'em.. were just running around freaking out, and just leaped into my soul. And they're still in there."
I think this is one of the most beautiful songs/poems I've ever heard.
in the movie the doors, this is the scene for the opening credits, which is how i inferred the meaning of the song. thanx for posting this extra info, tho
Shake dreams from your hair
Wow.
This song isn't about Jim's obsession with Indians or whatever. It was more about his younger days in college and how he used to just wander off for days. He would find women and he would get high and just live. It's about not worrying but still having to live your life.
you obviously don't know shit about jim morrison<br />
This is actually called The Ghost Song, not Ghost Song. I didn't see it, so I posted it, sorry.
Anyway, this is a great song.
indians schmindians, its supposedly the ghosts of people passed telling us how to live. from birth -shake dreams from you hair, my pretty child- 2 life - the music and voices are all around us- 2 death -enter again the sweet forest, the hot dream, come with us- its the ghosts giving the living guidance and the final line is their advice on being human -- we're the only intelligent species that can delineate the finite in the infinite, aka everything in life is broken up and dances
my opinion, morrison "the shaman" communicating w/ the spirit world, who tell us to chill everything in life is just dancing
either way a badass song that gives me goosebumples when im hi.
Philadelphia Eagles, not really actually. it's called Ghost Song/The Ghost Song. they're two different songs but they have the same lyrics.
The only difference is that one is at the beginning of the album and one is at the end. and The Ghost song ends with: "thank you oh lord for the white blind light thank you oh lord for the white blind light
a city rises from the sea I had a splitting headache from which the future is made"
Ghost song goes into Dawn's Highway
i love this song, i agree with the first post that i too love the music in the backround and i love the poetry to it. its so great!
