Lyrics for 4 Degrees as interpreted by dank

4 Degrees Lyrics
Get up and free yourself from yourself.

Locked up inside you,
like the calm beneath castles,
is a cavern of treasures that
noone has been to.
Let's go digging.
Bring it out to take you back in.

You won't do what you'd like to do.
Lay back and let me show you another way.
I'll kill what you want me to,
take what's left and eat it.
Take all or nothing.
Life's just too short to push it away.
Take it all.
Take it all in.
All the way in.
Let it go.
Let it go in.
You won't feel what you'd like to feel.
Lay back and let me show you another way.

If you knock me down I'll come back running,
knock you down,
it won't be long now
All the way in.
All the way.
Take it up higher.
4 degrees warmer.
Give in now
and let me in.
You'll like this in
Don't pull it out.
It brings us closer than
dying and cancer and crying.
Come on .
You can take it all.
Just like that.

yeah, it's four degrees warmer up your ass that up your pussy, if you have one that is, which I don't, for obvious reasons.

yeah, but its not really about anal sex ya know. its about forcing something on to someone in general, maynard just puts it a pretty blunt way. i read a very good opinon that it is from the perspective of god talking to a non believer.

I believe this song is mostly about the forcing of his peers to believe in something that he doesn't. I think we have all been through this and I hope that you all can learn to defy that which you don't believe in. Calmly though.

I think that Maynard is speaking about inner-self.
About bringing things to the surface of yourself.
Those things within us that we have yet to explore.
We should do this in an "Unconventional" or newfound way.("You won't do what you'd like to do.")
Destroy things ("I'll kill what you want me to.") that are in you that may be hendering you from nourishment. After you destroy the unneccesary, take the beneficial and grow from it.("Take what's left and eat it.")
If we try to deny ourselves of the truth about ourselves
we will do harm to ourselves.
Acceptance of one's self.
Denial of one's self is raping one's self.
We are our worst enemy....
Free your self from your self!

Actually, 4 degrees refers to the first-year cadets at the West Point Prep School / United States Military Academy Prep School he attended.

does anyone have any idea what the lyric "calm beneath castles" means?

I would assume it's a reference to the dungeon of a castle, as it says "Locked up inside you"

I heard that Maynard used to be a cadet at the West Point Preparatory School. The term 4 degree is used for the freshman their first year at the Academy. (UMA is one of the oldest structures in our nation and looks like a 'castle'). If the song does express " the forcing of his peers to believe in something that he doesn't", then what better self experience to use than the time he spent at a military instituion. I think the metaphor of rape in his lyrics is used to better describe the feeling of forced beliefs- spiritual, idealistic or whatever... by the way, i think he left after a year at the school.

The song is about seeing more about someone than others do. How that person locks up everything beautiful and wonderful about themselves, and sex is how to bring it out. Pretty much a diamond in the rough kinda story, with sex.

I believe personally that it's about forcing things unto other's, but yeah, Maynard just uses the anal sex connotations to get his point across. But like many Tool songs, they are open to numerous meanings and interpretations.

First off Wix3L, this song was made in 1991 some 11 years before 9/11 was even concived more or less....moron....anyways,
What this song gets to me is basically what alot of people have been saying its working towards unleashing feelings that are surpresed deep down and someone else comming along and going "hey man loosen up" and this person finally letting go. Thats the great thing about prog. Rock it can tell a story so well through the music.

I have also heard the Anal/Vaginal comparison and though that is true, it isnt what the song is based off of. Maynard is very serious about his music and the only songs that are really based off of sex that i can see is 'Stinkfist' but even then its a double meaning. Tool is just that mysterious...

First off, BlackMage, this song was made in 1993. Is it so hard to look up a fact? You're on the internet.

Maynard actually said at a concert I went to before they played this song (and I quote as exactly as I can remember): "Apparently, the anus is four degrees warmer than the vagina... I didn't know that."

skathic, well you're kind of ignoring BlackMage's point here. His point isn't to let everybody know exactly when the song was written, rather that it is just plain stupid to say that this song is about 9/11.

well i think that it means you need to have a good time in your life. he is apparently wanting to do some chick, and she is resisting. so he says "lay back and let me show you another way" so he is still tryin to get wants but she is still not going for it.

I'd say he deliberately gave it a double meaning. The little bald mutuant does such things in his songs, and five bucks, he KNEW it was five degrees warmer in the anal cavity. I'm with the theory of forcing beliefs, and possibly actions. I think the anal rape thing was more of a metaphor, or an analogy.

Has anyone ever considered that this song could be a reference to the contraction and rising of water when heated from 0 to 4 degrees celcius?
