Yeah!
Come on, come on, come on, come on
Now touch me, baby
Can't you see that I am not afraid?
What was that promise that you made?
Why won't you tell me what she said?
What was that promise that you made?

Now, I'm gonna love you
Till the heavens stop the rain
I'm gonna love you
Till the stars fall from the sky for you and I
Come on, come on, come on, come on
Now touch me, baby

Can't you see that I am not afraid?
What was that promise that you made?
Why won't you tell me what she said?
What was that promise that you made?

I'm gonna love you
Till the heavens stop the rain
I'm gonna love you
Till the stars fall from the sky for you and I
I'm gonna love you
Till the heavens stop the rain
I'm gonna love you
Till the stars fall from the sky for you and I

General Comment:I think the song is about Jim Morrison in the role of Mary Magdalene in the immediate days after his resurrection; in which he was forced to tell her "NOLI ME TANGER" - or "DON'T TOUCH ME" and the 'promise that he made" was that he would not engage in any worldly pleasures until the stars fall from the sky (and the second coming of Christ is this commitment to God that Maybe, maybe not.

General Comment:At the end of the song, Morrison can be heard saying, "Stronger than dirt," which was the slogan of the Ajax household cleaning company, because the last four notes of "Touch Me" were the same as those in an Ajax commercial and as a mocking criticism of Krieger, Densmore, and Manzarek wanting to accept an offer from Buick to use "Light My Fire" in a commercial. The deal was aborted when Morrison opposed. This vocal was omitted on the single version which was a different mix.

General Comment:Well, I love that end bit, "Stronger than dirt." shows they had a sense of humor. It is because those last four notes were the same as the four notes from a commercial jingle: Ajax laundry detergent--they showed a white knight riding a white horse, touching people's clothes with his lance, and they become pure white--unless it was the ad for Ajax color--then a white outfit became multi-colored. I wanted to see him touch a bride's dress and for her to clout him over the head! hahha.

"Stronger than Dirt!" But it works for a love song, too, I guess.

General Comment:I thought it's about him persuading his girl to have a threesome with someone she knows (why don't you tell me what she says?). Reassuring her of his love (I'm gonna love you.... ) and that he knows what he's doing (I'm not afraid)...

My Interpretation:Despite all the arguing I believe everyone has the right to an opinion and an interpretation, and also allowed to include any knowledge they may have of the song. It is song meanings, not lyrics meanings. So whatever the song means to you, to others, to the doors, to jim whomever, voice it.

Now this song I actually really enjoy because Jim really shows his talent as a singer throughout. The tune really suits him and the effect is mesmerising.

I agree with most people in saying that this song is a "sarcastic love song", though sarcasm may seem like it detracts meaning and makes it an anti-love song I believe the opposite. It's a love song regardless, the feelings are there but I feel as though there is a little exasperation evident. My interpretation is also based on the original lyric of "hit me"

Yeah! --- This was rather enthusiastic in a somehwat sarcastic manner, v. good attention grabber.

    C'mon, c'mon, c'mon, c'mon now --- sounds a bit like a plea
Touch me (Hit me), babe. ---- sounds like an address to a pissed off "Babe"
Can't you see that I am not afraid. --- not afraid to be hurt because it's deserved, or quite possible the opposite in that he's not afraid of her, she can get as angry as she wants but it won't change him
What was that promise that you made.

Why won't you tell me what she said.--- changing to third person here confuses me as "Babe" is referred to in all lines in 2nd person, so assume "she" and "Babe" are different girls. I think "she" is an outsider who may have been indulged in an affair to either a minor or major extent (due to the nature of the song my guess would be minor, such as a sleazy pass or drunken hook up etc) with the writer of the song (whoever you agree that was), or possibly have heard things and told "babe" about them. So now Babe has the sh*ts and he doesn't know why, but he doesnt seem to really mind.
What was that promise that you made. --- i dont have a solid interpretation of this like but I can imagine though, that Babe has made a threat (promise) and this is a sarcastic response to it.

Then he moves on from the petty threat and starts grovelling/ saying what "Babe" wants to hear because he's sick of her being all pissy and probably just wants to get to the make up sex already (suck me babe, cant you see i want head or whatever it was in the movie, works here too. He doesn't want to fight, he just wants to get it on. Maybe if Babe got it on a bit more she wouldnt be pissed at him.)
    Now I'm gonna love you

Till the heavens stop the rain.
    I'm gonna love you
Till the stars fall from the sky
    For you and I.

----for the chorus i see it as both sarcastic grovelling, or just saying what she wants to hear so he can be forgiven and they can start lovin', but also at the same time i think he's referring to the sex theyre going to have when she hits him and forgives him. He's going to do it all night (at least while he can) and its going to be really intense. They'll both enjoy it, so why doesn't Babe just hit him and get over what "she" said, I mean, Jim Morrison is singing to ya, if he told me to touch him by GOD i would.

Thats my interpretation, and i do love trying to interpret the doors songs. Jim was fantastic, his star burned out early but burned brighter than any other.

General Comment:WTF?! AVERAGE?! Are you mental?! Pretty much every song of the doors is pure gold! All gems! *I'm sure you meant to say most underrated band ever... Greatest vocalists of all-time/most underrated poet of all-time and a persona that pretty much sums up rock n' roll on it's own, with one of the most talented musicians and 'the' greatest keyboardist of all-time! And of course you cant count out Robbie and his imagitinative mind and also underrated guitar skills! And it's kinda hard to have the greatest band ever without a solid drummer and John Densmore definately filled the void! All around briliance! Pure Greatness! The doors define the words- Rock n' Roll.

General Comment:How can no one see how sarcastic this song is?

lol, let's look at it like this:

    guy: C'mon, c'mon, c'mon, c'mon now
    Touch me, babe.
Can't you see that I am not afraid.
What was that promise that you made?

Girl: why won't you tell me what she said?

Guy: what was that promise that you made?

Girl: Now I'm gonna love you
Till the heavens stop the rain.
    I'm gonna love you
Till the stars fall from the sky
    For you and I.

    He's just wants some lovin'

haha, what do you guys think?
