Lyrics for Ask as interpreted by weezerific:cutlery

Ask Lyrics
Shyness is nice, but shyness can stop you
From doing all the things in life that you'd like to
So, if there's something you'd like to try
If there's something you'd like to try
Ask me, I won't say no (how could I?)

Coyness is nice, but coyness can stop you
From saying all the things in life you'd like to
So, if there's something you'd like to try
If there's something you'd like to try
Ask me, I won't say no (how could I?)

Spending warm summer days indoors
Writing frightening verse
To a buck-toothed girl in Luxembourg

Ask me, ask me, ask me
Ask me, ask me, ask me

Because if it's not love, then it's the bomb
That will bring us together

Nature is a language, can't you read?
Nature is a language, can't you read?

So ask me, ask me, ask me
Ask me, ask me, ask me

Because if it's not love, then it's the bomb
That will bring us together...

i find the lyric 'shyness is nice' oddly comforting, perhaps because people normally view it as a crippling disability. however the niceness of the lyric is negated by the next line. but hey!

Morrissey is trying to say that if love won't bring them together, then "the bomb"/war/destruction is the only thing powerful enough to do it.

It's a clever take on how humans bond. We're at our best when we're at extremes.

Nice analysis, Alexbhlz. I agree 100% re: the bomb. As for the lyric "shyness is nice", it's both comforting AND a call to get off your ass to do something. See, shy people, like many of us, are usually nice sweet people, but that same shy sweetness means they will miss out on many of the JOYS of life because they are too busy being INDOORS and avoiding too much social contact. We should all strive to be both social AND still nice. An ideal world, really.

Also, his line "Spending warm, Summer days indoors
Writing frightening verse To a buck-toothed girl in Luxemburg" seems strangely PROPHETIC of how shy people will get into internet relationships with "buck-toothed", goofy looking nerds in far away places and have a long distance thing going. Moz seems to be saying this kind of thing is not productive and what the shy person should be doing is just come up to someone in person and just ASK them out, because there's a chance that other person wants to be asked and will say YES. Moz seems to be aiming the song at a shy person he's interested in, and is trying to give that person the hint that he won't bite.

So you are saying, hidispenser, is that all shy people should conform because they're useless freaks... Er...not really(I joke).

I love the line "nature is a language - can't you read". When you like someone, you tend to doubt and assume the worst and ignore any signals from them that they might like you.

It's just so...cute and sweet. I love this song.

I always thought it was "bond" and not "bomb." I mean, doesn't it make more sense for people to be brought together by a common bond, maybe shyness? I dunno. Then again, I used to think "son and the heir" was "Sun and the air."

The bomb brings them together in desperation. Since the threat of nuclear war hangs over their lives, they want to experience what they can since it could all end with no warning.

But what else from the context suggests war? "Bomb" just seems sort of random.

It's about breaking down sexual barriers. "nature is a language can't yuo raed" is a reference to poeples misinterpretations of sex and love. Morrissey is trying to say that love and sex has no gender only emotions and feelings --> nature. He is saying raed what ur body your nature is telling you. The bomb is symbolic for destroying those barriers.

I've got the booklet from their CD "Louder Than Bombs" here, and it says bomb, not bond.

thanks Morrissey...

Morrissey has long expressed that hes is/was a very shy individual, and in very basic terms how shyness can impede someone going after someone due to their shyness. Instead these people go after people who may not besuited for them "Spending warm, Summer days indoors/Writing frightening verse to a buck-toothed girl in Luxemburg" ...but i think it also has deeper meaning in how we all relate to each other in general, and how we all have SOME sort of shyness at some level "if its not love/then its the bomb that will bring us together"

About "then it's the bomb," my interpretation was that if they don't have love, the only thing bringing them together is violence, and that would be a horrible thing.

To me this song is about people coming together in extreme situations. Even people who aren't normally considered "shy" can get scared of approaching people they like. But during a time of crisis (like the threat of war), it can be great to just say "I've got nothing to lose" and do the thing that you've been wanting to do all along. This is my favorite Smiths song.

This is about being in a romantic relationship with someone and you think they want to do you up the butt but they are too shy to ask but you want to let them but you don't want to be like begging for it so you are like "just ask and I will let you."

It is a secret that I like this song.

Morrissey rather sarcastically professes "Shyness is nice" before bitinglly contradicting his statement with the fact that it stops you from doing "ALL the things in life that you want to". If anything it's a song about seizing the moment, "cape diem" and whatnot. The somewhat confusing bit about "the bomb" could have any number of meanings. Morrissey imagining World War 2 lovers locked up in bomb shelters with nothing to do but huddle together and provide an opportunity for love to grow is just one possibility. Perhaps he just refers to the unity and love brought about through terror (quite appropriate in a post 9/11 era). Or it could just be that he's saying that something drastic (that likely will never come - after all how often do bombs really drop from the sky?) is going to have to happen for things to change. Multi-levelled I'd say.

i've always thought that the line "the bomb will bring us together" is about how people will come together in order to do violence, ie war. a country working hard together to create the bomb, which i believe is supposed to be "The Bomb", the atomic bomb, because it symbolizes humankind's drive to war in general. this is damaging of course because people coming together to hurt other people is not unifying overall and thus shows the general fault of war.
