This song is beautiful. It's a shame a song so beautiful has actually recieved a lot of unnecessary, spiteful comments about the band themselves. If you don't like the band or the song, then why post on it? It's just a lame way of stirring up trouble.

Anyway, moving that aside, like people have already said, I think the song is about breaking up with someone, and perhaps it was a messy break-up, with fighting and the like, and this person regrets what they have said, and feels bad for saying hurtful things. I think the 'December' aspect of the song refers to December being a rather cold month, and this person perhaps feels rather cold inside, especially with this so called 'festive' cloud hanging over December. Also, the song is about reflection, and December is the end of a year and you naturally reflect on what has happened to you over the course of the year. I think the person in the song is almost getting rid of their guilt by being so open about their emotion state and feelings, and I think you do that at the end of the year, you admit your mistakes in the year, and you come to a compromise with yourself and admit your failings and try to resolve things. At least that's what I think anyway. :) I might be completely wrong and off the point, but like I said, it's just what I think.

Also, this song makes me think of death too, I think even someone close to the person in the song has died, and again, they regret saying some things, they wish they had said something else. The lines 'Just wish that I didn't feel like there was something I missed' makes me think of this.

I've always loved this song, I would listen to it at any time, not just in December. I agree with everyone about the meaning of it, it can be interpreted many ways. I love how this just adds to the fact LP can change tones easily. From soft like this, to something like One Step Closer, to some of the hip hop stuff (Yes, I do like that. I know a lot of people don't but there are some good ones they've made.) Today I just realized that Josh Groban also sang this song... does anyone know who sang it first? Because.. like others have said, their music says "Written by LP." The strange thing is...Groban's version sounds more powerful (not moving, but powerful) than LP's...which sees uncommon.

I think this song is about someone who has lost everything (eg. home or family) and is reflecting his actions and maybe the December part is because during the month December it is really cold and thats reflecting his mood

now this song is the best.i like it just bc i know where he is coming from.bc i never got to spend time with my bf {now husband}and you never know what you have till you lose it.it is a very sad song but it is the best.....

Great lyrics in this song. I also think that it is about breaking up with someone or someone breaking up with them. Missing out on a lot of things. Just looking back and thinking that there were alot of things that could have been done differently.

They obviously hurt someone and as they think about it they realize that they did the wrong thing and they hurt the wrong person and that now they won't get another chance. This song means a lot to me.

Normaly I don't like songs that are this soft, but this one just creates an atmosphere that matches the lyrics, which probably tell about how he had a relationship that failed and that now he'd give almost anything to get it back.

I only heard this song last year (I know, I know) I've got to say, next to Numb it's my fav. It's about you breaking up and taking back anything mean you've ever done. "This is my december my time of the year" Means, this is his new begginning.

To me this song is about coming home for Christmas. The family all coming together, from college, from different places. It's about forgiving everything and everyone for the time your home and having a home to come back to.

this remindes me of the movie "click"
In my opinion, maybe someone put there career or there dreams before there gf/bf, and the gf/bf got mad and left, and they acted like they didn't care and could go on without them. but now that it's winter, everything is snow covered. everything is white. everything is the same. Everything is equal, and they wish they knew that before, because now it's cold and they need somewhere to stay and someone to keep them warm for the winter. and even though everything is covered in snow and there is still one thing that's clear to them. and that's how much they love that person, and they would give up everything they had just for that special someone.
It's such a sweet song*tear* If i didn't have such a cold black heart, this song might just make me cry, haha:P

This song is so beautiful and also one of my LP faves.

This is about a guy hurting a girl he loves and regretting it. He wishes that he could take everything he did to hurt her back. He would give up everything that he has just to be with that person that he loves and loves him back.

actually, this song is about death.
it's about his friend commiting suicide.
and, he wishes that he could take back
all of things he said so that that person

I know this could be about how cold it feels after a breakup or something, but it can also relate to the withdrawal symptoms of an addiction? I mean, if you're addicted to someone, you can't help but feel there's something you missed, which keeps urging you to come back. And, well, they feel cold because they don't have the drug.

this song is easily my favourite for many reasons when i first heard this song i had just lost someone very close to me and to make matters worse the last time i had seen him we had a " BIG ROARING I'LL NEVER SPEAK TO YOU AGAIN TYPE OF FIGHT" i was greiving for the most part i had gone into one of those self imposed modes when i don't want to hear advice onhow to deal with grief and guilt when none of it works anyway and it hurt to talk it actually to be honest it hurt to breathe i just needed to be alone so i locked myself in my bedroom and turned the stereo up so i could hear my overconcerned way too dramatic boyfriend try to talk me down out of the room i just lay my head on the pillow to try to go to sleep when this song came on it was my wake up call eerily sad yet optimistic i loved it from the first it was halfway through when he brokedown the door i just looked at him and said shhhh LISTEN
