And by the way
You know that hope will make you strange
Make you blink, make you blink
Make you sink
It will make you afraid of change
Enough to blame the box with the view of the world
And the walls that fill the frame
I turn it up
But then I turn it off
Because I can't stand
When they start to talk about
The hurting and killing
Whose shoes are we feeling
The damage and ruin
And the things that we're doing
Gotta
We gotta stop
We gotta turn it all off
We gotta rewind
Start it up again
Because we fell across the fall line
Ain't nothing sacred anymore
Nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah
Somebody saw him jump
Yeah, but nobody saw him slip
I guess he lost a lot a hope
And then he lost a grip
And now he's lying in the freeway
In the middle of this mess
Guess we lost another one, just like the other one
Optimistic, hypocrite that didn't have the nerve to quit
The things that kept him wanted more
'Til he finally reached the core
He fell across the fall line
Ain't nothing sacred anymore
Nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah

My Interpretation:JJ has some killer lyrics - a modern day Bob Dylan - 40 years ago Dylan sung 'Its alright Ma I'm only Bleeding' which says just what JJ is saying now. Maybe we all go through a life stage of shiftng values & losing faith in the process ..

    "Disillusioned words like bullets bark
As human gods aim for their mark
Made everything from toy guns that spark
To flesh-colored Christs that glow in the dark
It's easy to see without looking too far
That not much is really sacred."

    - Dylan, 'Its alright Ma I'm only Bleeding'

General Comment:I've been trying to figure out what the fall line is symbolizing. I think it might be what's dividing earth with hell, but I'm probably wrong.

General Comment:Its about how we are causing the moral decline in society...

I have insight to the last part! It's about someone who was killed by religion! They killed themself when they found that people are nothing more than deceiving hypocrites.

    Somebody saw him jump, yeah
    But nobody saw him slip
(He killed himself but nobody saw it coming because he slowly became suicidal.. sure he jumped... but nobody saw that the causes.
I guess he lost a lot of hope
And then he lost a grip
(He realized that what he put so much faith in was fake and he gave up)
But now he’s lying in the freeway
In the middle of this mess
    (Now he is dead)
    Guess we lost another one
    Just like the other one
    (This is a common occurance)
    Optimistic hypocrite
That didn’t have the nerve to quit
The things that kept him wanting more
Until he finally reached the core
(He was optimistic about what he believed and he built on it so much but when it was gone.... he just gave up)

General Comment:To me Jack is talking about the News and how in this day and age where nothing is sacred to the world of ratings and sensationalist reporting. Items such as someone committing suicide on a freeway are sensationalized and made into more than it is. This makes sense to me since JJ was a film major at UCSB, so he knows his stuff when it comes to topics such as film.

General Comment:In reference to the "Somebody saw him jump" verse, it's about an icident that happend on the 101 freeway in Ventura. *just south of Santa Barbara, where he lives* A man decided to commit suicide by jumping off a freeway overpass. He was sitting up there for hours. As the traffic worsend, people started yelling at the guy to jump and get it over with.

General Comment:This song is telling us how society has just gone too far. I think the song is a call for us as people to try and clean up our act a little bit. The fall line is that line of what he considers appropriate and inappropriate actions in society.

    General Comment:just guessing:

i think this is talking about how our world, and society, is falling, across what jack johnson calls the fall line. what is this fall line? where is this line that we are crossing? nothing is good, wholesome, or "sacred" anmore, now that we have crossed this line. Our hope is all we have at this point, as destroyers of ourselves.

it mentions "the box with the veiw of the world"... he is refering to television i believe. we see what we think is the world through television, however you usually don't receive the full picture. We are beginning to blame the television, and the people we see, however the damage is done within ourselves. rather than blame the world and people around us, we must change the world with ourselves first (no matter how cliche this may sound).

We need to stop, take a "minute" and look around to see what we are doing to ourselves. we need to "turn it off" and "rewind". go back to the good, rather than push forwards toward destruction.

we see the things happening around us, but do we see why they are occuring? take global warming for instance.. we know it is happening, but are we reducing the use of oil, and lowering pollution because of it? some may be, but most are just waiting until it is too late. im not saying jack johnson is talking about global warming, im saying that he is talking about our procrastination towards making this world a better place. we need to pay more attention to the people losing hope, and those beggining to slip rather than the stories of those who have jumped. we should shift our attention to matters that greatly improve the world around us rather than what makes a good story.

people always reach for more, for that next thing available, until we lose ourselves to materialism.

    this song is brilliant.

General Comment:i think this is a really good song and in typical jj style the lyrics are outstanding and really speak to you. In the KPOG private concert jack says one of his greatest curses is writing songs that he cant sing, cos he doesnt give himself time to breath, i think this is one of those songs..."optimistic hipocrite that didnt have the nerve to quit the things that kept him wanting more until he finally reached the core" bit of a mouthful.
