Lyrics for 2 + 2 = 5 (The Lukewarm.) as interpreted by SyntaxLies

2 + 2 = 5 (The Lukewarm.) Lyrics
Are you such a dreamer
To put the world to rights?
I stay home forever
Where two and two always makes a five

I'll lay down the tracks
Sandbag and hide
January has April's showers
And two and two always makes a five

It's the devil's way now
There is no way out
You can scream and you can shout
It is too late now

Because
You have not been
Paying attention
Paying attention
Paying attention
Paying attention
Yeah, I'm not feeling it
Paying attention
Paying attention
Paying attention
Paying attention
Yeah, I need it
I needed attention
I needed attention
I needed attention
I needed attention
Yeah, I love it, the attention
Paying attention
Paying attention
Paying attention

I try to sing along
I get it all wrong
Because I知 not
Because I知 not
I swat them like flies
But like flies the buggers
Keep coming back
But I知 not

Oh, hail to the thief
Oh, hail to the thief
But I'm not
But I'm not
But I'm not
But I'm not
Don't question my authority or put me in the dock
Because I'm not
Because I'm not
Oh, go and tell the king that the sky is falling in
But it's not
But it's not
But it's not
Maybe not
Maybe not

First of all, what does this song mean?

I believe he's referring to synergy. Using the expression 2+2= 5 is a very common way to express synergy, a delighful and very cool thing to have. Other cool things is when its warm in January to have April showers and when everything is right. In his world everything is synergetstic. The rest, 'I'm gonna own you', is typical Radiohead dribble- sounds cool

Is 2+2=5 really a common expression of synergy? I've never heard that, and it doesn't sound right at all. To me, 2+2=5 suggests confusion and error.as if the world is "out of frame", as Claudius would say.

2+2 is a verry common definity of synergy:

"The whole is worth more than the sum of the parts, ie 2+2= 5"

In the novel 1984 the government controls all media and the expression 2+2=5 is propraganda by the government. The main character in the book clearly knows this is wrong and wishes to rebel against the government. I don't know if this relates to the book.. oh well.

By the way, the lyrics to this song appear to have changed completely halfway through. In the version I have, Thom actually sings "Hail to the thief, hail to the thief" at one point.

i thought 2 + 2 = 5 was a hint at the book 1984.

Thom Yorke is very anti-Bush... given the title of the cd, I think maybe 2+2=5 is a reference to the voting count mishaps in florida during Bush's election?

Yep, at 1:53, this song gets really tight. It sounds to me like what a nervous break down would feel like. Seems like Thom is associating the doublespeak to his girlfriend - the stuff about "I'll stay home forever/
Where two and two always make five."

2+2=5 especially, and all the other sort of doublethink at the beginning, alludes to orwell's 1984, in my opinion. I can't really tell what it is he's repeating over and over, it sounds like he's saying "Cuz i'm mad" or "Cuz i'm not". Either way, i agree "hail to the thief" is probably a stab at Bush in particular, and anyone who takes power illegally in general. Lines like "don't question my authority or put me in the box cause i'm (mad/not)" and "going to the king cause the sky is falling down but it's not" seem to reinforce an overall theme about who holds power and consequently who gets to decide what is sane and what is not, much like in orwell's 1984. Thom doesn't seem to trust our elected officials a bit.
