Everyday enemy tried to get the best of me
The enemy under my skin
Everyday enemy, my fatal flaw anatomy
Feelin' like I just can't win
Sometimes I wish I didn't feel that much
Sometimes I wish I didn't need that touch
But everyday my enemy pretend to be a friend to me
No matter what state I'm in

But you're never gonna take my fire
I cannot not be tamed
No, you're never gonna take my fire
It's burning in my veins
Ay! You say the world is changing
But I still burn the same
No, you're never gonna take my fire
Take my fire
Oh, let me burn now

Yeah, the safety that you're sellin' me, one day be the death of me
A face like you just saw ghosts
Images on the box again, taking up all the oxygen
Tell me how we sunk this low
Ain't it coming, ain't the end in sight
To steal it back like a thief in the night
There's my own sworn enemy, faking and pretend to be
A wolf in a sheepskin coat

But you're never gonna take my fire
In spite of all your rain
No, you're never gonna take my fire
It's burning in my veins
Ay! You say the world is changing
But I still burn the same
No, you're never gonna take my fire
Take my fire

Because
I'm a fighter, a soul all-nighter
I'ma recognize the truth, I'ma recognize a liar
You're never gonna take my fire
True beginner, a loser and a winner
Part Saint, part sinner
And all of me desire
You're never gonna take my fire
I'm a giver, a one-arrow quiver
I've been sending my regrets
Down the river of fire
You're never gonna take my, my fire
A loose, live wire
I'm a one-shot rocket aiming higher and higher
And higher

'Cause you're never gonna take my fire
Ay! No, you're never gonna take my fire, oh, oh
The ancient flame lit the spark back before I was young
When I'm speaking with the fire, it's my native tongue
No, you're never gonna take my fire
Take my fire
Let me burn now

    My Opinion

The song to me narrates two scenarios through the verses. The story from how I'm going to give it is about a newborn in Christ. In the first verse, it's as if he's describing how the church is. They tell you where you need to go to experience God, but yet they have a schedule for it, so they have a closing time telling you when you to leave. (Though you can experience God anywhere at anytime!) The pastor teaches you of sin, which tells you everything you are, and he tells you about how you're  supposed to strive to be like Jesus, which tells you who you need to be. Then service ends and you've got supposedly more "seasoned" Christians who come to talk to you about God, but it's as if they don't believe a word they're saying. Their words and conversations are empty. But you know the truth, you know how you feel, you know there's so much more than this, and you're about to burst and can't describe it, all you know is you're on fire when He's near you. You're on fire when you hear Him speak. You're on fire and awestruck, burning at His mysteries. The second verse takes you to the the place where you've tripped in your walk. Everyone has, does, and will continue to sin. It's by grace of a loving, but a just God, and a sinner's repentive heart that He forgives us. But once you've truly encountered God, you can't go without Him, you have to be near Him, you have to feel that fire. And so you're begging God to forgive you for what you've done. You know that everything you are is wrong, but that your only hope for change is through God. Which the fact that you have a repentive heart shows that God has changed you already. But no matter what it takes, you have to be on fire in God's presence again. We have our own beliefs, but I will not apologize for mine. "Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. (John 14:6 NLT)" "If anyone is ashamed of me and my message, the Son of Man will be ashamed of that person when he returns in his glory and in the glory of the Father and the holy angels. (Luke 9:26 NLT)" "I will speak to kings about your laws, and I will not be ashamed. (Psalm 119:46 NLT)"

That's what I love about Switchfoot... they are a Christian band, and they are proud of it and they admit to it during interviews and in magizine articles and things of that nature. Yet their lyrics are so vague, yet so to the point that you don't have to be Christian to enjoy them...

I'm Christian, but I have friends of other faiths who love Switchfoot and they can relate the "love" that the band is talking about which is meant to be in reference to God, and they can relate it to a loved one, or their family, or their grandparents...

I'm not saying it's a healthy thing to love a girl as much as your supposed to love God, in fact, it's pretty much against everything the Bible says, but still... haha I'm not even going to go down that route.

Lemme just say that they (Switchfoot) really are a great band and I too saw them live at the Newport in Columbus and the show was incredible, and cheap too... it was like 14 bucks and we got to stand in the front row. Now that's a deal :)

I hope everyone enjoys this song as much as I do.

got this from landofbrokenhearts.org (a switchfoot fansite) this is straight from Jon Foreman (lead singer of switchfoot) himself:

"Daniel Heavenwrad, a friend of mine from Canada, came out to California and stayed at my place for a day. We went out for pizza, wrote a couple of Remy Zero-ish songs, and called it a night. In the morning, about an hour before I was going to drop him off at the train station, this song flew out. We threw it down, I burned a CD for Dan and we raced to the station. This song is so personal- it feels great to play live. On a good night, I feel like I can just throw myself into this song and drift off over the crowd through the PA."

i never really understood whether he was talking about God or a person he misses, but when i listened in a personal situation i took it as myself missing someone. (at least, something along those lines.) but still a great songs.

Of course, everybody has their own opinion about the meaning of the song & for me it says everything about the way my life has turned out to be. It's funny how I discovered the song about a week ago too; that's when everything in my life turned around.

To me this song is about how my life has been - everybody was telling me how to live it, how to speak, how to act, how to be - "They tell you where you need to go, they tell you when you need to leave, they tell you what you need to know, they tell you who you need to be," & I have always felt that there's something more to it, that the way I was living wasn't right - "But everything inside you knows there's more than what you've heard, there's so much more than empty conversations filled with empty words." It can also be said about the past relationships that a person, in this case me, has had. I mean, there are these types of relationships when you don't feel that you can be fully opened, when you can't bet truly happy, because something's missing. And the best part, now I feel like I'm literally on fire, I feel so alive! "And you're on fire when he's near you, you're on fire when he speaks, you're on fire burning at these mysteries!"

And now ... now I have this chance to live my life the way I want to. I am the creator of my life & he opened up my eyes, & am so grateful for that. I want to be a better person, I want to do the things to inspire others. I have so much love inside & I can finally let it all out! I finally feel good in my own mind, in my skin, in my body! "Give me one more time around, give me one more chance to see, yeah, give me everything you are, give me one more chance to be near you, yeah

When everything inside me looks like everything I hate, you are the hope I have for change, you are the only chance I'll take!"

Well, that's what the song & the lyrics mean to me. :)

It's crazy how this song has the same piano tune throughout the entire song, but yet it feels like it changes a lot from verse to chorus and etc. Absolutely awesome!

So I think he's trying to say that he screwed up. She moved on and is "on fire" when she's around the man that took his place and he misses her like crazy. Everything's a mystery to him.
I think this is my favorite song on the album!

I totally Agree with Swimmer, EVERYONE OUT THERE, Switchfoot is a CHRISTIAN band, most of there songs relate to live and of course god, not girls, its very easy to be mistakin. In this song they want you to feel gods presence , enlighten your soul and trully make you alive. VERY deep song if its taken the right way. I just saw them live at teh chili cookoff and was amazed. There performance was just so real. Great Band!

Standing On The Edge Of Summer

In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/
