I'm the best you'll ever have
You're the best I'll never have

Pain
Gone.
Rain
Stop.
Sun
Shine.
You're
Mine.

Here kitty kitty kitty
Mommy mommy mommy mommy mommy
Here kitty kitty kitty
Listen:
Listen through the walls
The sound of quick footsteps sneaking down the hall
Whispers
The pages turning
The leaky roof
The toilet flushing
Numbers on the license plate

I'm nothing more than
The best you'll never have
A speck on your bedroom wall
A blood red waterfall

The best you will ever have(x3)
Your dead things are locked up inside
Blow smoke rings straight back in time
Roses floating out with the tide
Dance and sing under gunfire
Open wings slowly take flight

Around these parts a fly can live
A fly can live a thousand years
But a man cannot die soon enough, true enough

A smiling drunk nursing a glass of milk
A girl with a face like prison bread
Over the kitchen noise I hear them howl at me

A scabby ketchup bottle and a two-dollar bill
I guess its time to pay the bill, but you know I never will
I'm hungry still

Run away run away run away run away
Mercy killing on the way
Never thought I'd hear you say
Falling to your knees and pray now(x2)

In this crowded place I could swing a cat
And not even hit a soul
It's just the lonely vacuum of human black holes

And I'm as dry as these thirsty trees
With big city thou
Promising to set me free
"waiter, check please"

I'm the best you will ever have

General Comment:This song says more about my life than I ever could. Personally I think it deals with the perils of loneliness. Once held inside too long, the feeling of abandonment can start to eat you alive. You see a pretty girl and all you want to do is scream in her face "I'M THE BEST YOU'LL EVER HAVE!" You start to unravel at the seams, craving help ("Mommy!") and just someone to talk to. But by the time it ends it will be too late.

General Comment:amazing song. complicated lyrics. the vocals in the "RUN AWAY, RUN AWAY, RUN AWAY, RUN AWAY" parts are extremely Sawtooth Grin-esque, which is not an easy feat to accomplish. One of the top 5 best Dillinger songs, absolutely.

General Comment:this song may very well be the best "screw you" song regarding a break-up because of infidelity (mainly at the end where the girl asks the guy to meet her at the diner to ask for him to forgive her and get back together as shes "falling to her knees", but then he pretty much says "screw you" and walks away). HOWEVER, after further review of the verses that didn't fit into that interpretation, i think this song is about a guy who's a little "off" that murders someone he has some sort of intimate feelings for, who now has a family with someone else. Being the psycho revengeful lover he is, he seems like a "good guy" (or good dog), as all crazy people who seem normal seem nice & good do. So now the dude is in prison and every other verse is him remebering his crime.
From "Pain, gone.." to "MOMMY" he gets the idea to kill the woman he likes, thinking it will end his pain, and her kids cry out "MOMMY" as she is killed - most likely shot. "Why shot?", you ask? we'll get to that in a sec.
From "Listen.." to "license plate" the man is obviously in prison. The license plate thing tips you off the most out of the lines in that verse.
This next verse is where he remembers shooting her and her blood goes splat all over the wall. The line after (as did the first two lines of the song) expresses his opinion that he could've been the best thing to happen to her relationship- wise & screams that hes the best she will never/ever have as he kills her.
From "Your dead things.." to "open wings slowly take flight.." he's in prison, possibly smoking a cigarette and thinking about the woman's funeral. "A thousand years...but a man cannot die soon enough.." means waiting to die in prison is taking for fuggin ever.
"A smiling drunk..." to "I'm hungry still" he's remembering being at a restaurant, having a meal, casually looking at the other customers, contemplating his crime, ect. "I'm hungry still" meaning he wants "justice" for the girl leaving him by killing her. He thinks "RUN AWAY", obviously filled with rage, but doesn't leave the restaurant yet.
The next verse he's thinking about right before killing her, when she will beg him not to. How the music gets chaotic and raging for this verse is awesome and complementary to the lyrics.
The following verse about "swing a cat and not even hit a soul" confuses me. Are we sure the word is "cat?". "Just a lonely vacuum of human black holes" expresses the man's desolate loneliness.
In the last verse the man is at the restaurant and is just about to ask for the check. "Big city thoughts in a dirty breeze, promising to set me free" is his little inner psycho telling him that once he gets his revenge, his pain of her being with someone else will be resolved.
When he screams "I'M THE BEST YOU WILL EVER HAVE" he's incredibly frustrated that they couldn't be together.
The timing of the verses with when the music starts crazy, to the middle where the singer sings (not screams) gently and thoughtfully, to the end where he talks about remembering leaving the restaurant, to the last seconds of the song where he screams "I'M THE BEST YOU WILL NEVER HAVE" as he's still lonesome and frustrated with no one to be with is all so perfectly designed for the emotion of the song's story. This is my favorite DEP song, its like crack in audio form. Gotta love 'em.
