The ragamuffin gunner is returnin' home like a hungry runaway
He walks through town all alone
He must be from the fort he hears the high school girls say
His countryside's burnin' with wolfman fairies dressed in drag for homicide
The hit and run, plead sanctuary, `neath a holy stone they hide
They're breakin' beams and crosses with a spastic's reelin' perfection
Nuns run bald through Vatican halls pregnant, pleadin' immaculate conception
And everybody's wrecked on Main Street from drinking unholy blood
Sticker smiles sweet as gunner breathes deep, his ankles caked in mud
And I said, "Hey, gunner man, that's quicksand, that's quicksand that ain't mud
Have you thrown your senses to the war or did you lose them in the flood?"

That pure American brother, dull-eyed and empty-faced
Races Sundays in Jersey in a Chevy stock super eight
He rides `er low on the hip, on the side he's got Bound For Glory in red, white and blue flash paint
He leans on the hood telling racing stories, the kids call him Jimmy The Saint
Well the blaze and noise boy, he's gunnin' that bitch loaded to blastin' point
He rides head first into a hurricane and disappears into a point
And there's nothin' left but some blood where the body fell
That is, nothin' left that you could sell
Just junk all across the horizon, a real highwayman's farewell
And I said, "Hey kid, you think that's oil? Man, that ain't oil that's blood."
I wonder what he was thinking when he hit that storm
Or was he just lost in the flood?

Eighth Avenue sailors in satin shirts whisper in the air
Some storefront incarnation of Maria, she's puttin' on me the stare
And Bronx's best apostle stands with his hand on his own hardware
Everything stops, you hear five, quick shots, the cops come up for air
And now the whiz-bang gang from uptown, they're shootin' up the street
And that cat from the Bronx starts lettin' loose
But he gets blown right off his feet
And some kid comes blastin' round the corner but a cop puts him right away
He lays on the street holding his leg screaming something in Spanish
Still breathing when I walked away
And someone said, "Hey man did you see that? His body hit the street with such a beautiful thud."
I wonder what the dude was sayin' or was he just lost in the flood?
Hey man, did you see that, those poor cats are sure messed up
I wonder what they were gettin' into, or were they just lost in the flood?

My Interpretation:I think Bruce is telling a story about 3 distinct characters, but demonstrating that many people are disenfranchised by American society and resort to a way of life that is really beyond their control (or at least they don't see that they have any other options), and ultimately, they pay with their lives. The church, full of its hypocracy, only creates more confusion of good vs. evil. And the stander-by's with their train-wreck mentality demonstrate how coldly people shrug off loss of life and continue to focus on material things and their personal status. We are all lost in the flood- whether you are one of the victims or one of the careless observers.

My Interpretation:Testing whether I can comment on songs. It doesn't let me do so a lot of the time.

General Comment:Sometimes I think the only mistake God made in the last flood was saving Noah and his family. Next time - no Noah!

General Comment:As always, with Springsteen lyrics, it's best to not analyze the song, but let it wash over you. The live version on 'Live in New York City' is far superior the the Asbury Park version (still an excellent album, though).

As I understand it, the song is a commentary on returning Vietnam vets and a vignette of American life in general...

General Comment:The song to me is about the inevitability of escaping ones past and how it changes the trajectory of your life. It is about our primordial bent towards self destructive behaviour when faced with extreme circumstances. The first verse is about a returning vietnam era vet who was shattered by the war living a shell of his former self, driven by his past to descend to a life of addiction, suicide in slow motion. The dogma of religion is put on trial as well by the church's stigmatizing of human behavior and needs as even nuns can not resists temptation. The race car sequence references the human need to tempt fate and try to defy death ultimately leading to the inevitable demise of those who have the innate need to live on the edge. The final stanza just references the extreme desperation that is americas inner cities and the pervasive crime and the sense that ones fate is destined to be decided by the barrel of a gun. A song that is written at a time when america was suffering a moral decay... The aimless wanderings of returning vets who were expected to adjust to a world where killing was normal to one where there nightmarish experiences were expected to be erased in the span of a return flight home, greeted with antipathy by a society that was largely indifferent to their needs, falling into despair as the pervasive availabilty of hard drugs exerted its grasp on the maladjusted. The gravitational pull of violence and self destructive behaviors in our inner city and the love affair with flirting with death and self destructive behavior. All in all a poetic look at societal ills and those on the fringes of nihilism.

General Comment:i dont really believe this song is "about" anything. springsteen is a wonderfu lyricist for painting pictures, and i see this song as a series of snapshots of american life. if anything it depicts the fleeting nature of our presence on this planet. "lost in the flood" - we are all tiny parts, almost insignificant, of a mass.

General Comment:this song really is not meant to be about Vietnam, Korea, or any other war... it is meant to be taken on a personal level... this is how i took it:

T: Title- Lost in the Flood
What is “the Flood”? Is it a biblical reference? Or a trap called the flood? Or just pain and suffering
    P: Paraphrase-
This song begins by telling how returning soldiers from Vietnam did not fit in anymore. The second story tells how racing can ruin your life by spending all your spare time racing, putting your life on the line. The final story depicts gang and drug wars.
    F: Fig. Language-
This whole song is figurative language, It shows how evil human nature is and how competitive the world and life is.
    A: Attitude-
The tone of this song is really up to how you interpret it.
    S: Shifts-
He shifts perspectives 3 times, going from Vietnam and Korea, to Car racers and car enthusiasts, to gang and drug wars.

General Comment:I always assumed that "Hey gunner man that's quicksand, that's quicksand that ain't mud," has to do with the gunner man not knowing what he's been through. This could be taken on a less literal level, and interpreted as the general public not being aware of all the bullet's they've dodged over the course of their life. Just a thought.

Song Meaning:i am pretty sure this entire song is everything about vietnam. in the first stanza, the ragamuffin gunner is returning home. wen the soldiers came back from vietnam, the were a mess and completely disheveled physically and mentally. and the high school girls realizing he is from the "fort" or the war because people were the exact oposite of supportive during the war. the next line is again another reference to the mental state of the soldiers after the "homicide" they comitted in vietnam. "the hit and run pleads sanctuary, neath the holy stone they hide". we went in to vietnam and then surrendered and left and since the country is full of forests and ditches, the people were in shambles and hid underneath the little forest trenches incase of another ambush from us. and then the nuns running bald through vatican halls is just another oximoron to show the mess of the US after the war. the unholy blood could refer to the media who was felt very strong against the war and almost the entire country turned on the country.

now the second stanza. the pure american brother dull eyed and empty faced is explaining how the people were after they returned. bruce mentions plenty of times that all of his friends who went to vietnam, if they came back, they just werent the same. the soldiers were all traumatized. the rest is just telling how wen the soldiers would tell stories about the war and being there, they got excited and they spoke faster and faster and just broke down and you can tell they were gone and there was nothing left but there physical body, no feeling no thoughts other then dread and sadness and horrible thoughts.

and in short, i think the last stanza refers to the riots the happend wen the soldiers came home. the cops were probably everywhere and if you were different and looked suspicious, every move you made was being watched. this really shows the prejudices of just everyone during that time and the unwillingness to accept equality.

this is just wat i think i could be wrong, but looking at bruces writing, he writes with meanings beyond the words that he right and in this case i think its just a bit further then the words but not by much.
