Lyrics for Everything Is as interpreted by mrtrout

Everything Is Lyrics
Growing sleepy as the rain falls
As children draped in flowers form a chain
They sing a song with jelly jars and bird calls
As night falls into dust and it's day again

I'm not afraid of a love parade in my daydream
Old men with kazoos and beating drums
But I awake and I see the streets are ice cream
It's just you and me and, oh dear, our life has just begun

Everything is beautiful here
It's spinning circles around my ears
I'm finally breaking free from fear
And it's fading

Oh, beautiful smiles, won't you stay awhile
We could close the door and sleep all day
It's a September sky with pretty pictures in my mind
That's lost its feeling of so afraid

Everything is beautiful here
It's spinning circles around my ears
I'm finally breaking free from fear
And it's fading

Growing sleepy now as the rain falls
As children draped in flowers form a chain
They sing a song with jelly jars and bird calls
As night falls into dust and it's day again

Everything is beautiful here
It's spinning circles around my ears
I'm finally breaking free from fear
And it's fading

I'm really superised no one has commented on this one yet. It's such a happy song, happy on it's own, but extraordinarly happy for a Jeff Mangum song. The only one issue is the it's fading line. Is the newfound joy and strength fading? or the fear? It's a choice the listener has to make.

I love the careless feeling of this song. It's one of the best feelings in the world. I'm pretty sure the line about fading is about falling asleep.

This song seems like it\'s describing that state right as your falling alseep or just waking up and your mind is free to browse your subconcious while you\'re still wake enough to know what\'s going on.

If that makes sense to anyone. o_o

"everything is beautiful here" its a dream about perfection or peacefulness. "and its fading" means that he is waking from the day dream and he realizes that it wasnt real to begin with.

This song makes me smile. It's so happy compared to most everything else Jeff Mangum does. Its just got that relaxed, content feel to it.

I love it.

I think the line 'it's fading' is in refence to fear. The line right befre it is about fear so it's logical to assueme that. Then again this is NMH, so logic doesn't really need to apply if he doesn't want it to. But everything else here is about being happy, night falling into dust and its day again, etc.

I do however, think it's odd that on the 1993 demo, not the EP, this song is followed by an early version of April 8th, cos that songs so depressing and everything is is very happy.

I think it envolves not being able to break an addiction of some sort. I don't think this song is happy at all, maybe one of the saddest.

I think that it's about constantly looking for perfection and beauty, almost grasping it, and then losing it. A very constant, familiar feeling, having a perfect dream and then trying to fight waking up from it, the dream fading.

It's a very human emotion (in a very honest, human song), the constant pursuit of happiness without ever truly attaining it...it sounds like a very upbeat, happy song so I guess it's trying to say it's worth the never-ending chasing to have those short moments where "It's just you and me and, oh dear, our life has just begun."

I really don't think it is a happy song. In fact, when I heard it for the first time I thought it was, but when I paid attetion for the lyric I saw it wasn't.

For me is very clear that he dreamt about a perfect world, and he didn't want to wake up for reality, because reality isn't so good. When he says "and it's fading" I think he's talking about the world that only exists in his mind.

"Oh, beautiful smiles, won't you stay awhile
We could close the door and sleep all day"

The beatiful smiles are the happiness in his dream, and he want to "sleep all day", so he can be happy forever. But he's waking up for reality, a not very beatiful world, with not so many beatiful smiles.

I disagree with it being such a happy smiley song, i actually think it's pretty eerie and surreal.

This song at first seems really carefree and happy but the more you listen to it and listen to the lyrics the more twisted it becomes. Most def. trippy. Could be depressed and could be caught between what's real and what's not. Who knows it's Jeff Magnum.

I also feel that this is a song about the human mind. I think he is discussing the aesthetics of dreams and their contrast to his "real-life" and a realization that he need not fear his life because of the lack of control that we have over our subconscious mind.

I think the line about fading is about the fading which occurs after you experience great moments of clarity such as that there is nothing to fear or when you experience a complete absence of fear from the mind until you have to once again reconcile your thoughts with pragmatism.
