Lyrics for I Will Bury You in Time as interpreted by buckley

I Will Bury You in Time Lyrics
I will bury you in time
When the sea begins to slide
Into this hole where I am smiling on your shoulder
You have buried my beliefs
Where all you sisters sleep
That there scent the purity will make
When the youth is over
Standing in some Oct-October

And I am breathing into you
It makes your features move
And they shimmer like balloons that fly above the ocean
All the world is waiting here
You can hear the children cheer
But they'll need you when you're near
The brink of complete implosion
Crown your king when your life is broken

Everything you are I'm tearing through
Everything you want I'm wanting too
I gave you more than I thought I could ever do
But I will never break you down

And if I was the king of all the kids
You'd you hear me singing in my spit
But all you would hear is the shit inside my burnt emotions
I will bury you in time
When the sea begins to slide
Into this hole where you and I will sing our songs unbroken
As the water starts its choking
Dee dee dee dee dee, etc.

Umm.. he says "Me and a rockstar in a hole by the beach... and can't get out." Not in a home by the beach... making out. Quite different, I think.

This is a love song in the purest sense of the word - he is going to be with this person until the end (of the world? maybe...). It's a little dark, but hey, such is life. I put it on the first mix tape I made for my girl, almost a year ago.

I'm gonna have to say it's a little from column A and a little from column B

I think he says "me and a rockstar in a hole by the beach... makin' out" But i do like the idea of the "Can't get out" maybe you're right, i don't think it really matters that much because the rest of the song speaks for itself

He says "me and a rockstar in a hole by the beach...Can't get out." It's hard to hear but you can tell from the lyrics.
"I will bury you in time
When the sea begins to slide
Into this hole where you and I will sing our songs unbroken
As the water starts its chokin'
dee dee dee dee dee etc."
They can't get out so they choke and die. I have no idea what this song is about but it doesn't change the fact that it's amazing. Probably something to do with...Being with someone until death or being with someone even though that person is bad for you.

Jeff mentions in another show it's about being stuck in a hole in the middle of the ocean with a rock star as the water seeps in. Same thing.

The third verse is actually "but I will never break you down".

I've got some kind of theory about this song talking about Jeff Mangum being the you-person too but the you-person would be presenting him as a singer, not as a person, he does the same sort of thing in Little birds when he sings : "open up my mouth when all you even hear is singing, put your hand within me and you know what I'm feeling".

I will bury you in time

Bury you in time, could be an announcement of him stopping releasing music, as we all know Jeff Mangum stopped releasing music after ITAOTS.

You have buried my beliefs
He has somehow lost his belief in the singing side of him, that music isn't the way to solve everything, this he explained also in an interview with Pitchfork (if I remember correctly)

And I am breathing into you
It makes your features move

Breating into you, obviously he is the you-person, and make features move, the misery in Jeff Mangum comes out through the singing of the you-person

You can hear the children cheer
But they'll need you when you're near

About the fans?

Everything you are I'm tearing through
Everything you want I'm wanting too
I gave you more than I thought I could ever do
But I will never break you

He never expected himself to get so famous with his music. The I will never break you part talks about the fact that he will return to write songs some day (hurray!!! ^^)

And if I was the king of all the kids
You'd you hear me singing in my spit
But all you would hear is the shit inside my burnt emotions

If he somehow would start singing not as the you-character but as just himself it would be too sick for people to listen too (in the days when he was recording ITAOTS, Jeff doubted various times wheter or not his songs weren't too sick to be released)

Into this hole where you and I will sing our songs unbroken

Another clue that he and the you person could be the same

I would like to remind you this is a pure subjective thing how I view this song, further it's one of my fevourite songs from NMH, basicly beacuse of the intense singing of Jeff here.

I think KingJelle is onto something here. On my version Jeff's introduction about the rock star has been cut off, but by what people have said the two things go hand in hand.
I think Jeff probably thought (and feared) about fame however minor or major that may be. It sounds to me like it is the rock star singing to jeff, but the rock star is in him. It is the demon or the angel or just the future that is lying on his shoulder whispering into his ear.
As an example the second verse is about the rock star singing through him. It seems Jeff knew that he would struggle with the kind of fame and almost level of worship that he may or may not end up with. This is him looking into the future with a fear of what lies ahead. The line 'crown your king when your life is broken' is about the 'children', seeing jeff as this figure of adoration when he has gone and is a broken person. In the same way that when an artist dies prematurely, particularly when self inflicted, people often look back on them all starry eyed and through rose tinted spectacles.
I won't continue going line through line because I'm sure it all makes sense if you want to interpret this way.
Oh, and just before I forget - this song is absolutely amazing! No matter what you think it's about.

hmm. i think "i will bury you in time" means: i don't want to, but i will forget you. even if it hurts, an even if it will take a long time. " to loose someone you love - thats what the song is about. anyone agree?

I would have to agree with slartibartfass. As Jeff has said, it is about either him or someone else in a hole by the beach with a rockstar, as the water begins to slide into the hole. I think that the song is about one of the two in the hole not wanting to accept that they can't get out and will drown. The person doesn't seem to care about the fact that they won't exist anymore, just that the other person won't. So, the narrator is going to take their good time accepting that knowledge, and in the mean time make out with them, love them. It's just how I see it, I doubt it is Jeff's actual intent, but I guess that is one of the great things about his songwriting. It can be interpreted in so many ways.

i think this song is about music trends shifting and twisting and fading out, and how listeners find a way to relate with the artists views and opinions. thats what i got out of it at least, i dont think its about love loss or gain, but thats just me.
