And the men who hold high places
Must be the ones to start
To mould a new reality
Closer to the Heart

The blacksmith and the artist
Reflect it in their art
Forge their creativity
Closer to the heart

Philosophers and ploughmen
Each must know his part
To sow a new mentality
Closer to the heart

You can be the captain
I will draw the chart
Sailing into destiny
Closer to the heart

My Interpretation:To me the lyrics may be a vague tribute to Plato's noble lie in which the city is the social representation of the tri-partite soul within us all.

General Comment:Neil Peart who wrote these lyrics has never been religious. No New age hum here. I have read interwievs with him and he has nothing to do with New Age or the occult.

I don't think this song is an underlying plan to world domination...
Just me personally, at least...I don't think this song was INTENDED anyway, to be either deceptive or evil.
I feel strongly that this is more of an anthem to change, if nothing else. Those with the power or reason to stepping forward, demanding change. All people, from philosophers to plowmen, playing their part in society--I don't think that means as slaves--and helping to keep the world turning.

Everyone working for the world that we all live in. A message of unity and change.

That's just my belief, at least.

My Interpretation:If you look at the objectives of the New World Order, I believe this song is tribute to the objectives of an elite and secret socitey to bring about world rule by one authoritarian government and the vision is Luciferian and completely deceptive and evil. It has nothing to do with man going down a path of greater harmony, compassion and understanding. The vision in occult terms has to do with the Age of Aqurarius.

General Comment:This song reminds me of the book Atlas Shrugged. Specifically those that are recruited to live at Galt's Gulch.

My Interpretation:Everyone can have different opinions, but I think we all get the general gist of the ideas presented. As for me, I think its a celebration of the arts and the emotional side of humanity. It is things like creativity, philosophy, all of these wonderful things that make us human and unique. I think Rush encourages people to embrace this side of humanity and become "closer to the heart", or take in all of these beautiful gifts we have, with the possible dream of men uniting over these arts. In a sense, I also feel like it relates to the Renaissance. Whether it is or isn't about it or anything I just said, I have no idea. I think everyone's interpretations on this page are awesome.

Song Meaning:lol. you all have great ideas. But this song can only be understood if you have a knowledge of the philosophy of a very little known school of economics that is the founder of the modern socialist movement in the world. Look up the Fabian Society of the London School of Economics. or just Fabian Society or Fabian Socialists for short. This song is about their philosophies and depicts what is shown in their famous stained glass window which, itself is a symbol of their beliefs. This song is very in keeping with Rushs typical progressive political opinions.

My Interpretation:To me, this songs is about "change": the change of society into some new that is kinder and "closer to the heart". Our leaders (those in high places) are the most responsible (and the foremost) for bringing this change about. But they should consult with and take input from the common man from various facets of life. In this new society, all should cooperate and compliment one another.
