Consider green lakes
And the idocy of clocks
Someone shot nostalgia in the back
Someone shot our innocence

A broken arrow in a bloody pool
The in the face
Of midnight proposals
Someone shot nostalgia in the back
Someone shot our innocence

In the shadow of his smile
In the shadow of his smile
In the shadow of his smile
In the shadow of his smile

All our dreams have melted down
We are hiding in the bushes
From dead men
Doing Douglas Fairbanks' stunts

All our stories burnt
Our films lost in the rushes
We can't paint any pictures
As the moon had all our brushes

Extracting wasps from stings in flight
Who killed Mr. Moonlight?
Who killed Mr. Moonlight
In the shadow of his smile
Who killed Mr. Moonlight
In the shadow of his smile

General Comment:Death of innocence. The realization you aren't immortal. See Douglas Fairbanks.

General Comment:Always thought this was about the murder of John Lennon, for some reason...

General Comment:Roseweave: I recall "goth" being used around at least by '84 or '85 at the latest. At the time, it was seen as a sort of cartoonish bit of fun for those of us who grew up on Addams Family and RKO horror reruns, and definitely not to be taken seriously.

I was quite surprised, in the mid '90s, when a younger acquaintance mention having goth friends: "You mean goth is STILL around? Well, I never, you kids these days, etc ..."

Most amusingly, I now work with a goth kid of 19, who had never heard of Bauhaus until I burnt her some CDs last week.

General Comment:I thought Bauhaus was one of those bands that "wasn't" goth rock, despite the fact that they influenced the genre, probably even more than Joy Division... and despite the fact that they fit the exact definition of goth rock.

Either way, it's a great song. So are all Bauhaus songs... almost. x_x

General Comment:This is one of my favorite songs. The first time I heard it, I really wasn't all that familiar with the band. My best friend had me listen to the song. I took it to be lamenting a loss of some kind. Like the end of childhood and being forced to "grow up" when you don't really want to.

I don't know, the moon references and such really just remind me of Hey Diddle Diddle for some reason.

General Comment:This can't be about the "death of goth rock", goth rock didn't really "die" until the 90s. The Sisters of Mercy were barely around by the time this was written, and goth rock didn't become a widely used term until later in the 80s(In a recent interview, Peter Murphy thinks it wasn't used until the 90s, presumably used for bands like Switchblade symphony, but he's probably purposely bullshitting).

Even the original Post Punk scene that Bauhaus were a part of wasn't dead by then, that didn't fully end until '86 at least.

It's possible it's about the band ending, though. Which is a bit premature since they're releasing their "Real" last album next march...

General Comment:on the sleeve notes on my cd which has copies of the lyrics as was initially written it says

    'consider green lakes
    and the idiocy of clocks
someone shot nostalgia in the back
    someone shot our innocence'

General Comment:On the version of this song I have it says

    "Consider green lakes
    and the diary of clocks
Someone shot nostalgia in the back
    Someone shot our innocence
and all our colors have run"
