Outside the sidelines failing,
Harder than the martyred stars of made-for-TV crime
Indoor living in cardboard confines
Counts for very little when safe is just a state of mind
I fell off the sidelines long ago,
I have no occupation, I'm just wasted for the weekend scene
So don't ask me out, don't make me try,
'cause I don't want to let you, I don't wanna

I can't complain if I don't know how
Its a sad sad song with no story line
I fall to sleep in my rented room
It's not much to talk about,
I've got so much to talk about
But I don't want to let you
I don't want to let you down

Last call for societal knockdowns
Measure my endeavors loosely based
On someone else's song
Melodrama and a bottle of wine
Yeah, here's to self expression
Here's to everyone that's dead
Bring back the days that fell behind
I'm all wasted conversations
In the corner of an empty room
So don't ask me out
Don't make me try
'cause I don't want to let you
I don't wanna

Outside the sidelines
Failing harder than the martyred
Stars of made-for-TV crimes
So don't ask me out
Don't make me try
'cause I'm just gonna let you
I'm just gonna let you down

General Comment:when i fall asleep on a lonely saturday nite after a good day, this song is always in my head. i just go 2 sleep... alone on those nites and i feel like those r the best times i can get for then. "I fall asleep in my rented room.., its not much to talk about. but ive SO MUCH to talk about but i dont wanna let u down" pretty much sums up how lonliness feels and just knowing u have nothing going on important since someone left u (if thats the case). well, for me at least. so thx MCS for writing this life saver of a song!!! MOTION CITY SOUNDTRACK 4 LIFE!!

General Comment:basically this song is about a person who wanted a better life than the one they got. they're sick of were they are so they dont want to go out and try to change things because at this point they feel so hopeless that it feels better just to be alone and dwell on their failures. when they go out they see other people, people who are doing the things they want and the feel even more hopeless so they just continue to tell their friends to steer clear of them so that they dont get brought down

General Comment:this song is about a guy whose glory days are in the past, and has long since fallen off the radar. He sees himself as a worthless individual who could never live up to anyone's expectations, and so he stays home or wherever he is comfortable so he'll never experience that failure. If he doesn't know failure he can't complain. So dont take him out or make him try, he would only let you down is what hes saying. its a sad sad song. ~the leaky sink of sentiment

General Comment:Story of my life. Feeling really low self confidence about relationships, and wanting to avoid them for fear of disappointment. Thinking you're going to be a huge let-down for anyone who might be interested.

    Cheer up, emo kid.

General Comment:To me, this song is about feeling like a failure.
"I fell off the sidelines long ago." Maybe he was trying to walk the line between the "good life" (go to school, get a job, get married, etc.) and the "bad life" (drugs, drinking, meaningless sex, etc.) and he's saying he's fallen off the line, he couldn't lead a double life, and now he's left with the part he didn't really want.
"I have no occupation, I'm just wasted for the weekend scene." Occupation is always a huge part of identity, and I know from experience how useless I feel without a job and a purpose. He just turns to the bottle to deal with these feelings.
"Don't ask me out, don't make me try, cuz I'm just gonna let you, I'm just gonna let you down." He doesn't want to risk hurting someone in a relationship because he's failed at so much already, and he doesn't even want to take the chance.
That's how I see it, at least..

General Comment:I've always thought about this song in the same way that The_Fighter explained it. He doesn't want a relationship because he's just going to let them down with his life of indoor living, which isn't much to talk about.

And to sneef2010, I was watching an interview with them on YouTube and they said when they were writing it the lyrics were "here's to every one night stand" but when they were practicing to record the song someone thought it sounded like "here's to everyone that's dead" and they liked that better, so that's what they went with. So, yeah, I'm pretty sure that you're right.

General Comment:Im pretty sure the line is "here's to self expression, here's to everyone that's dead", not "here's to every one night stand" even though the latter makes a little more sense in the song...
    now im confused haha
