The song is about a broken relationship with the lyrics directed at the ex-girlfriend/wife, but doesn't deliver it as straight forward as most other songs do. He places a lot of emphasis on the tension between different perspectives, and the cycles most couples fall into whenever it comes to a break up.

"Yours is the only version of my desertion that I could ever subscribe to"

• The story that the ex tells to everyone, which lays the blame on the singer, has become so elaborate and changes so much that it's like receiving a new magazine about their relationship every month.

"That is all that I can do"

• The singer can't stop her from talking, or argue anything against her conviction.

"You are a past dinner, the last winner I'm raping all around me"

• The "past dinner" is a euphemism for an occasion for when the singer did something wrong. The "last winner" is the supposedly truthful and right ex being done wrong by the singer in every possible way ("raping all around me").

"Until the last drop is behind you"

• Her story and words about how faulted the singer and relationship is, is like venom that can't be exhausted. It's constantly flowing.

"You're so cute when you're frustrated, dear You're so cute when you're sedated, dear I missed you"

• This stanza is basically an biting comeback to her true nature. He gives a sarcastic remark about how she's always angry, followed by a not-so-sarcastic remark about how much more pleasant life would be if she would shut up. "I missed you" is basically a sarcastic equivalent of "shut up / way to prove me right / this relationship was destined to fail at the rate you're going at".

"Sleep tight, grim rite, we have two hundred couches where you can sleep tonight"

• The "grim rite" is when someone is told to sleep on the couch rather than in the bed, which is the biggest flag that something is wrong in a relationship.

"You are the only person who's completely certain there's nothing here to be into That is all that you can do"

• An explicit fault this time around that points out the ex's constant problem with everything, which is "all she can do" because it's in her nature.

"You are a past sinner, the last winner and everything we've come to Makes you you"

• After all the arguing and discussion of what went wrong in the relationship, it's boiled down to everything that makes her her: things that she can't change when she is blamed. It's more of a statement about how unwilling she is to change herself for the better, but is completely fine with telling the singer how he needs to change himself. Hypocrisy at its finest.

"But you cannot safely say while I will be away That you will not consider sadly how you helped me to stray"

• It takes two people to fail a relationship. She can make up all the stories in the world about how the singer was the enemy and the reason for everything to go wrong, but she can't drown out the voice in the back of her head telling her that she drove him away. She didn't do any more to fix the situation than she did to burn their friendship to the ground with her backtalk while the singer has moved on.

"You will not reach me I am resenting a position that is past resentment And now I can't consider and now there is this distance, so..."

• The singer is tired of hating her, and has figured it's not a fight worth fighting for. The break up has spiraled so far out of control that there's nothing left to save.

"Something to say Something to do Nothing to say When there's nothing to do"

• Arguing over a broken friendship/marriage gives everyone something to talk about, but when it has turned so for the worst that there's nothing left, there's nothing to talk about anymore. It's just done.

I've fallen in love with this song so much that I couldn't help dissect it. I'd say that it's the most true to how life works out sometimes.

Wow... rape... religion. This one seems to be all over the place. This band tends to avoid songs with social commentary as the main theme. It's usually personal and introspective when it comes to lyrics. I feel this is about a relationship that went bad. Really bad.

"You will not reach me I am resenting a position that is past resentment And now I can't consider and now there is this distance, so..."

He feels so much anger towards her that he almost feels nothing at all. And he actually feels terrible about the fact that he is feeling so callous. He is "past resenting" and so is she. Ever been so angry that you didn't care anymore? There is really nothing left to even talk about because things between them are that bad. They are emotionally miles apart with no hope of reconcilliation.

"You're so cute when you're frustrated, dear You're so cute when you're sedated, dear" He says he only likes her when she is frustrated and sedated. He's being sarcastic and mocking her as in:"You're a nice person... when your sleeping" kind of way. It seems they never really got along too well.

"You are a past dinner, the last winner I'm raping all around me Until the last drop is behind you"

A past dinner, referring to time spent together. The last winner, referring to her being the one who dumped him. He's raping around himself.. raping, means to take, forcefully, something against the will of another. It's about power through action in most cases. He is making a fuss, perhaps expressing his anger, tearing himself apart (or maybe the relationshp?) as she walks away from things, thus the "drops" left behind her.

"You are the only person who's completely certain there's nothing here to be into That is all that you can do. You are a past sinner, the last winner and everything we've come to" She was "certain" there was nothing left of their relationship and wanted out. She seems to have screwed up quite a bit in the relationship as well.

"But you cannot safely say while I will be away That you will not consider sadly how you helped me to stray" It also sounds like he feels that she has changed him in a way he does not like. Perhaps he has become bitter as result of all that has taken place between them. Also it gives me the feeling he's saying that she is making a major mistake in leaving the relationship and will regret this later. But then again, he really doesn't want her.

The sleep tight, grim rite of the chorus is kind of like telling someone to get lost and goodbye with veiled anger. It's very sarcastic too because he talks about having 200 couches for her to go away to sleep on figuratively.

My 2 cents...

I think it is about the end of a relationship. He is blaming her for some of his actions. He was unfaithful because she did something to hurt him (maybe cheated also) and/or neglected him: "But you cannot safely say that while I will be away, you will not consider sadly / How you helped me to stray"

"Sleep tight, grim rite, we have two hundred couches where you can..."

Couches are a reference to sleeping on the couch when you've done something wrong in a relationship. You've been rejected and put out of the bed you share because you upset the other person. It's symbolic for the ending of the relationship again. "Grim" is something harsh and dreary, and a "rite" is a ceremony that symbolizes a passage. The breakup feels like a "grim rite", or a harsh passage into a new era without that person.

"And you will not reach me I am resenting a position that's past resentment and now I can't consider, and now there is this distance, so..."

He is past regretting what he or she has done, and he is basically over the whole relationship. The distance between them is too great now.

As for the title, "PDA" (Public Display of Affection) is sarcastic in itself. The relationship has gone so far south that the arguments or back-talking between them are their most common forms of expressing their feelings for one other.

Kind of like the "nothing fights" that Dane Cook talks about in one of his routines.

I think this song is about two people who are in a relationship and one of them, the girl (since it's a guy singing the song), her personality is awful but that's what makes her attractive. Anyone ever heard about SPD? It's this personality disorder, people with SPD don't really find anything interesting and don't really have lots of emotions and stuff... and this coldness makes the girl attractive to the guy since he's willing to abandon his former habits and way of life (that's what I think he means by "desertion" ... and he says her version is the only one he "could ever subscribe to", he wouldn't do this for anyone else...). Maybe she tried changing, going to a shrink perhaps, was given some drugs ("so cute when you're sedated")... but it's impossible for her to settle with the guy and they can't have a normal relationship and this is expressed through the existence of two hundred of couches she has to choose from, all of her "friends" or maybe strangers, she doesn't really have or need a home since she is unable to care about anyone... but he understands it because he says "sleep tight" But then the second verse is much more bitter because the guy realizes what a fcking ordeal it is to be in love with someone like that and care about them, and he's like "this is actually really fun why can't you just enjoy it, everyone's having fun" ("You are the only person who's completely certain there's nothing here to be into, That is all that you can do") and he understands that it's the girl's personality, but it still saddens him when he realizes she won't consider whatever she's done with his life, how she's affected him, she won't ever think about it, she doesn't care at all, and so he's leaving her ("now there is this distance so...") and he knows she will continue just the way she's lived before. and the song ends with him trying to forget about her and at the same time take something out of the situation, but there's nothing he can do so he just leaves her alone.

and PDA refers to how she doesn't really act like they're together at all, maybe they're out and he sees all the couples holding hands and stuff, "public displays of affection", and then he looks at them two and sees how detatched she is from him, how different it is....

oh well that's what I think. ;)

The very repetitive chorus indicates that he's still haunted by the past and what could've been. He can't get comfortable in his suddenly empty bed, and he is replaying the past in his head. He may be going through sleep deprivation, trying to count couches instead of sheep, envisioning the more cozy confines of a couch rather than the vast emptiness of his bed.

"Yours is the only version of my desertion that I could ever subscribe to" - He's accepted her version of events for the failed relationship.

"That is all that I can do" - Resignation, he can do no more other than accept it.

"You are a past sinner, the last winner" - She played a role in this failed relationship, she has her own sins to atone for. A concession, he admits defeat - he has lost and declares her the winner.

"I'm reaping all around me" - He's gathering it all up, picking up the pieces trying to put himself back together.

"Until the last drop is behind you" - She still carries pieces of him with her, or at least he feels that way. Though he's defeated, still there is no closure. He'll continue to reap the pieces until the last one has been collected.

"You're so cute when you're frustrated, dear" - Even the memories of her anger and frustration are fond memories now. At this point he'd settle for at least a frustrated look from her.

"You're so cute when you're sedated, dear" - Of course, there's nothing more peaceful than viewing someone while they sleep. He'd rather remember her sedated face.

"Oh yes dear." - Yes, the peaceful serenity of sleep is a better memory to hold onto than the image of a frustrated face.

Also may be a sarcastic comment on how she can just sleep tight, moving on with her life; while he's left with sleepless nights, haunted by memories and accosted by thoughts.

"You are the only person who's completely certain there's nothing here to be into" - He is again crying out for closure. She's moved on, but he's still feels there's unsettled business, perhaps even a chance that there's something left to salvage.

"That is all that you can do" - Asking how she could do so little or not care. When after all..

"You are a past sinner, the last winner" - She's not without her share of faults, yet she can just walk away as the winner. Please don't just walk away so easily after what you've done.

"And everything we've come to, it makes you, you" - She is who she is, all that's happened has revealed who she really is. Fine, be yourself,it's just like you to not give me that closure or even try to rebuild what we had.

"Oh, but you cannot safely say while I will be away" - Don't be so smug and don't be so sure that while we're apart...

"That you will not consider sadly how you helped me to stray" - I may stray. Don't be so confident that one day you won't look back and realize that you had the chance to fix this. It'll be too late then and it's sad that you're not doing anything right now to prevent that from being a possibility.

"You will not reach me, I am resenting a position that's past resentment" - I am beginning to shut myself out to you. I hate how I'm feeling right now. I should leave this resentment in the past and move on as you have.

"And now I can't consider and now there is this distance, so..." - Yes, I should stop thinking about this and just accept this distance once and for all.

behind "Sleep tonite" Daniel sings: "You're a Simpleton You're a Simpleton Can I Follow? What the Hell?...."

For Dan's background lyrics, I always hear: "You're set for all time, you're set for all time; Can I follow? What's that for?"

At least the "You're set for all time" part makes sense; in the context of having couches where someone can "sleep tight".

I love the ending to this song. Beautiful.

PDA=Public Display of Affection

The chorus reminds me of when you're at a party or something and you drink too much and you just sleep where you fall. If the song IS about a relationship gone sour, the chorus could signify that he still has feelings for her, and anytime she wants to come back she can. The "We have 200 hundred couches where you can sleep tight..." could mean his willingness to have her back.
