Lyrics for Don't Confess as interpreted by heavyinmyheart

Don't Confess Lyrics
don’t think I’ll confess
don’t think I’ll confess that I
don’t think I’ll deny
don’t think I’ll deny that I
don’t be so hard on yourself
you won’t get better till you're worse yeah

you send a little smile my way
and don’t be so hard on yourself
you won’t get better till you're worse yeah

you send a little love my way
every second I spend waiting
drags me closer to this grave
I’m not alone
no, I’m just on my own

and I
it's a little cold outside
ooo

don’t think I’ll escape
why would I escape you?
don’t think I’ll replace
how could I replace you?

and don’t be so hard on yourself
you won’t get better till you're worse, yeah yeah

you send a little smile my way
and don’t be so hard on yourself
you won’t get better till you're worse yeah

you send a little love my way
and every second I spend waiting
drags me closer to this grave
I’m not alone
no, I’m just on my own

and I
it's a little cold outside
ooo

and so don't be so hard on yourself
you won’t get better till you're worse

send your love my way

It's not "Don't Confess (This Thing That Breaks My Heart)"
"This Thing That Breaks My Heart" is part of the title of AND DARLING
*sigh*
Does nobody even look in the lyric booklets these days? Or even listen to the SONG?
D:

But I love "Don't Confess"
a lot
a lot a lot

Chelsei... I'm pretty sure these people are aware of that fact. However, 'Don't Confess (This Thing That Breaks My Heart)' is actually the name of the song. As it says on the back of the album.

Hmm... maybe it doesn't say that on your copy, but it certainly does on mine. I don't know why, because I know that the bracketed bit is a line in And Darling. But oh well. I'm not going to go around telling Tegan and Sara they're wrong.

Hm..no one actually said what they think this song means. well, it reminds me of myself not being able to confess to this guy that i like him. or liked him, i'm not sure anymore. but anyways, based on what i'm going through this song sounds like she doesn't want to confess or deny her feelings and she wants the person on the recieving end to send her a signal ("send a little smile/send a little love")...i dunno, that's what i get out of this. i'd like to hear other opinions though

I have no idea what this song means. one time I hear it it means one thing, the next it means something else. I guess that's what makes these lyrics so good, they mean so much.

i think this is a diolauge bettween two people who have clearly stopped loving each other but still hold each other dear, and incouraging each other to move on even if it didnt work out. its sweet and honest without being all sicko girlfriend/boyfriend on each other after breaking up.

I think this song is about a couple in which person 1 has decided that she needs a break from the relationship to deal with her own issues, and the narrator (person 2) is having a hard time with the separation and can't move on. She (the narrator) is trying to express that she just wants to be with the subject despite what the subject thinks she may need to accomplish by taking a break. The lyrics "Don't be so hard on yourself, you won't get better 'til you get worse. Send your love my way," give me the sense that shes trying to say "Don't leave and try to get better because its just going to get worse. Stay with me and love me."

Oh, and regarding the issue of the title, I definitely think that it was deliberately a line from the song "And Darling." Maybe the subject of this song was the same in both songs. In "And Darling" the subject seems to be breaking the narrator's heart, so to speak, with her love, and in this song her heart is being broken because she was left by this person.

I agree with Ms Tadakichi's interpretation - i feel that the song is about having feelings for someone but not being able to 'confess' it at that time..yet wanting signals in return. Perhaps i just took that interpretation out of it because that's how i felt at the time i was first exposed to it. Regardless, it is an awesome song.

don’t think I’ll escape
why would I escape you
don’t think I’ll replace
how could I replace you

ahh.
amazing.
i was thinking maybe about not telling someone you have feelings for them, and not feeling sorry for yourself that you cant be with that person, just knowing that for whatever reason, youre not with them.

i always thought it was about a couple, or even close friends, who are going through a difficult time in their relationship, but in the end they still love each other and want to get through it.

i don't see how how its about unrequited love, because it seems to me these people already have a relationship of somesort

Luv this line.

It's like when you try so hard to be perfect that you just get worse than you was.

They lyrics aren't exactly right on here..
"don’t think I’ll escape
why would I escape you
don’t think I’ll replace
how could I replace you"
And "Do your worse" not "'till you get worse"

I'm liking this song.. kind sad though

i think it's about a girl that is afraid to confess her feeling for someone either because she knows they acn't be together anyway or just because she feels insecure about being with someone at all...

This is a Tegan song, and Tegan has often commented that she was less obvious about her sexuality than Sara was growing up. She'd say: "Here's my girlfriend," and someone would say, "Here's a plant." (That's banter from one of their live shows, I'm not sure which one.)
Anyway, getting back to the point, I think this song is about not having to confess being gay.
My personal opinion on the matter is: be open, and don't hide, but definitely, don't confess it like it's some kind of sin. And I think that might be what Tegan means when she says:

Don't think I'll confess
Why would I confess that I
Don't think I'll deny
why would I deny that I

She's not going to feel like she has explain herself, but she's certainly not going to deny it either, or hide it.

When she says: don't be so hard on yourself

She could be saying, don't put so much pressure on yourself (to confess)

Don’t think I’ll escape.
(Don’t think I’ll escape)
Why would I escape you?
Don’t think I’ll replace.
(Don’t think I’ll replace)
How could I replace you?
(How could I?)

Here she's saying, don't think I'll run away from who I am, don't think I'll run away from you and replace you with somebody else (go straight).

I don't know when she wrote this song, but maybe it was about how hard it can be on young people to come out. It does have a bit of a sad vibe to it.

My favorite lines:
And every second I spend waiting,
Drags me closer to this grave.

I'm not sure exactly what she means here, but I think what she's trying to say is that the longer she spends waiting to be honest to the world about herself, she's dying a little inside.

Whether my interpretation is exactly what Tegan meant or not, who knows, but I can definitely relate to not wanting to "Confess", as if being gay is a bad thing. People just need to be themselves, be open, be obvious, and if others have a problem with it then fuck them. Straight people don't have to say: here's my significant other, why are they the opposite sex? Oh, that's because I'm straight. I mean, it doesn't make any sense.
