Lyrics for Here I Am as interpreted by heavyinmyheart

Here I Am Lyrics
in the dark
someone come with you and said
are you ready to go
are you ready are you set
and so they start again
don't tell me
ready arms out
I am standing here now
now I'm ready to
stronger than the rest
better than the best
she said here I am
she said here I am
strong as any man
the only woman
she said here I am
she said here I am
stronger than the rest
better than the best
she said here I am
she said here I am
walk away
you've had more than your say
ready now, ready now
let's go, let's ready
here we go
better than the best
stronger than the rest
she said here I am
she said here I am
gonna take you
to the end of tomorrow
I will take you
to the end of my world
I'm gonna fight for the right
to believe in myself
I'm gonna fight for the right
to release myself
release myself and
rainbow shirt ribbed
in acid love
and our lives are ribbed
in plastic love
here I am
here I am
it's not just you
she loved me too
here I am
here I am
it's not just you
she loved me too
here I am
here I am
gonna take you
to the end of tomorrow
I will take you
to the end of my world
I'm gonna fight for the right
to believe in myself
I'm gonna fight for the right
to release myself
release myself and
it went on, on, and on
it went on, on, and on
stronger than the rest
better than the best
she said here I am
it went on, on, and on
it went on, on, and on
strong as any man
was the only woman
she said here I am
here I am and on
walk away
you've had more than your say
here I am
it went on, on, and on
it went on, on, and on
louder and louder
it will build and fade
and soon your love
will turn to hate
she said here I am
she said here I am
it went on, on, and on
it went on, on, and on
louder and louder
it will build and fade
and soon your love
will turn to hate
she said here I am
louder and louder
it will build and fade
and soon your love
will turn to hate
she said here I am
here I am, here I am
on, on, and on
on, on, and on
louder and louder
it will build and fade
and soon your love
will turn to hate
she said here I am
she said here I am
walk away
you've had more than your say
you've fallen down
and now we're tired
and we need some time
to rest our head
underqualified, undersatisfied
I lie
I'm underqualified, I'm undersatisfied
I lie
I'm underqualified, I'm undersatisfied
I lie
I'm gonna take you to the end of tomorrow
it's not just you, she loved me too
I'm gonna take you to the end of my world
I'm gonna qualify
I'm gonna satisfy
my love
I will take you to the end of tomorrow
I will take you to the end of my world

it's so crazy that in all those years only one person would comment. This is such a good song. I wish so much that they would rerecord they're really early stuff. Or just record singing them live once now.

I love, love, LOVE their early stuff. It's like spoken poetry said out loud to a beat. Not that their new songs are bad or anything...they did get me hooked on them after all but still, TnS back in the day rocked!

Sooo, the song...coming out. In the beginning she seems to have made her mind up about telling everybody the truth.

"I'm gonna fight for the right
to believe in myself
I'm gonna fight for the right
to release myself"

She seems to realize that she should be able to experience life the same way everybody else does.

"gonna take you
to the end of tomorrow
I will take you
to the end of my world"

^^^ dont know what that means, but those lines are amazing.

what really gets to me though...

"RAINBOW SHIRT RIBBED IN ACID LOVE"

so beautiful. =]

Yeah I kinda like this song. Too bad Tegan basically disowned this song by saying she wishes she'd never written it. :(

When did she say that? I seen youtube videos of her saying some of her old songs embarrass her.. it was a banter video and someone in the audience was like "play girly man! (which is actually called burried alive, but is often missnamed)" and she was like "wow.. god no" ... and then later she was like "i find myself being embarrassed like 10 times a night.. people are like "play superstar!.. and I'm like oh god, worst song I have ever written"

to me it sounds like it's about losing her virginity, but maybe I'm just thinking dirty =P

... To me, it just sounds like a relationship. Ups and downs, loving and hating.

I think the realese myself part was about maybe finally being able to go out and say she's lesbian [she is lebian rite? cause thats what I keep hearing] and I heard she doesnt like this song now....maybe its cause she realized she isnt actually lesbian, maybe bi or straight. Idk haha sorry.

I dont get the 'rainbow shirt ribbed in acid love' part.....it sounds cool tho. Can someone explain it to me?

As far as I know, Tegan's still a lesbian. By disowning them, I think she's saying that she can't really relate to the whole "feeling like you're ready to come out to the world" thing, which is what I think this song is about. That and as I see it, being let down by someone you wholeheartedly trusted yourself with.

Hell yeah to female empowerment, anyone?

I think it's about a girl who is in the closet and another girl helping her come out of it. She wants to show this other girl her world and how it's okay to be yourself and also show her that she loves her etc.. In the end though, the girl in the closet doesn't feel like she's ready and/or good enough for this other girl.

"rainbow shirt ribbed
in acid love
and our lives are ribbed
in plastic love"

I do think that this song sounds like she wants to come out, to be honest about herself with everyone.
The rainbow shirt is being gay and the acid love is the negativity and pain she knows come from bieng gay in our society.
Plastic love is the fake admiration, the fake approval that these kids have to experience; the people that say that being gay is acceptable, but are really unaccepting and look down on it.

I think what the others have said about coming out have got it, especially mbacka and yesterdaystomorrow1

from the beginning, "in the dark... are you ready to go" about being read to come out, followed by part that's very empowering in her gender.

"rainbow shirt [homosexuality] ribbed [supported by] in acid love [painful]" but after all, isn't pain part of truth? like the idea of not feeling pain when you're asleep so you pinch yourself. I think that
the realness of their love makes it hurt even more

on the other hand, their lives are filled with "plastic love" which sounds like a cover or a decoy, keeping them safe from society, but fake all the same

"it's not just you/she loved me too" sounds more of that decoy, like the girl Tegan's with is actually seeing another guy to cover her own ass about her sexuality. Tegan's confronting the 'I'm-not-gay' boyfriend.

this very much is about the regression of a relationship. Tegan is wanting to be real and stand out to the actuality of her being gay ("fight for the right to believe in myself/fight for the right to release myself") and the other girl is afraid. I think Tegan realizes that her relationship with this girl cannot last because of her need to be honest with herself and is asking for the time to stop and think, to take a break from their tired romance
she is adamant about staying her ground, asserting that she is going to be qualified for and satisfy the girl she's going to be with.

sorry if I butchered it, but just had to put in my two cents 'cause I LOVE this song

Does anyone else hear, "It's not just you she left me too" instead of "loved" on the last verse?
