Lyrics for Lies as interpreted by StarGazingJavert

Lies Lyrics
Bound at every limb by my shackles of fear
Sealed with lies through so many tears
Lost from within, pursuing the end
I fight for the chance to be lied to again

You will never be strong enough
You will never be good enough
You were never conceived in love
You will not rise above

They'll never see
I'll never be
I'll struggle on and on to feed this hunger
Burning deep inside of me

But through my tears breaks a blinding light
Birthing a dawn to this endless night
Arms outstretched awaiting me
An open embrace upon a bleeding tree

Rest in me and I'll comfort you
I have lived and I died for you
Abide in me and I vow to you
I will never forsake you

I'm inclined to say - keeping in mind that this is just my interpretation - that if this does have religious undertones, it can be interpreted as almost anti-Christianity, or at least our idea of it. The duet parts seem to me to be symbolic of duality (God and the devil being the same being), or evil masquerading as Jesus/God/what have you (I'll refer to this as "Jesus") - for example:

" Bound at every limb by my shackles of fear
Sealed with lies through so many tears
Lost from within, pursuing the end
I fight for the chance to be lied to again"
It's as if the singers know it's ("Jesus'" words) a lie but, as they're drawing closer to death, desperately wish it wasn't.

"You will never be strong enough
You will never be good enough
You were never conceived in love
You will not rise above"

"Jesus" - note the duality - is breaking them down, telling them they're not good enough for "him".

"They'll never see
I'll never be
I'll struggle on and on to feed this hunger
Burning deep inside of me"

Singers want to tell people that everything's a lie, but know no one will believe them.

"But through my tears breaks a blinding light
Birthing a dawn to this endless night
Arms outstretched awaiting me
An open embrace upon a bleeding tree"

They've given up and given in to believing the lies.

"Rest in me and I'll comfort you
I have lived and I died for you
Abide in me and I vow to you
I will never forsake you"

Take a good listen at how this part is sung, and note again the duality - sort of menacing, imo.

Okay.
Amy Lee has announced that they are not a Christian band, and so their songs will never be based on religion. (Although they do have some relegiouse remarks in Tourniquet, but it is not BASED on religion.) And they didnt meet at a church camp, they met at a band camp when Amy was playing 'I'll do anything for love (but I won't do that)' on the piano.
So, in my own opinion, I think it's someone struggle to succeed in their goal. They feel lied to by fake praise, and it's holding them down.

I'm sorry if you guys were offended by anything I wrote, I didn't want to make a bad first post 0.0'

I always saw it as being good enough for those around you. Never will think of the god thing, just not what it means to me.

I agree with everyone who says it's about Jesus, but NO they are not a christan band. People theese days.

I;ve been wondering something though, it seems like the remix took the message of the song and totally reveresed it....Which makes it kinda offensive...idk, maybe they did it cause they were mad at people for callin them christan. LOL jk.

I believe that this one part of the song:

"You will never be strong enough.
You will never be good enough.
You were never conceived in love.
You will not rise above."

is referring to Lies told to a child while being brought up. Emotionally abusive parents would use those as excuses to make thier child feel like theyre not good enough. But secretly, the child had inhibitions inside that will prove thier parents wrong one day:

"They'll never see.
I'll never be.
I'll struggle on and on to feed this hunger burning deep inside of me."

Hunger= Hungry for isolation and personal success from the heart, escaping the hurtful opinions of those who should matter most, but just cannot.

“There are people hell-bent on the idea that we're a Christian band in disguise, and that we have some secret message. We have no spiritual affiliation with this music. It's simply about life experience.”
Amy Lee

This song is about someone who was hurt in a relationship.

" Rest in me and I'll comfort you
I have lived and I died for you
Abide in me and I vow to you
I will never forsake you "

It sounds almost mocking, I think they're partner said it but didn't mean it. The person was lied to in the relationship, and it's over.

this songs about relationships.
i think its about a guy who left her and now she's realizing that "he will never be strong enough, he will never be good enough" and she's realized she's wasted so much time mouring over him now she's like "whats the point"i think its the getting over the significant other song.

I like this song and all, but I'd never be able to understand what they were singing if I didn't look at the lyrics! The first time I listened to it, it was like listening to the grown-ups from Charlie Brown singing (albeit in prettier voices.)

I've listened to this song many times now and even though I know the lyrics, it's still hard to hear sometimes.

It isn't about Jesus or God or anything like that. Please shut up and stop trying to force your Christian crap on the rest of us who are actually in touch with reality.

And another thing; what's with all of you indecisive bastards that aren't Christian and yet you agree Evanescence wrote this song based on religion? YOU choose what the song is about. Whether or not it's about "God" shouldn't matter. The song is whatever you interpret it as. Use your damn imaginations!

The religious meaning sounds about right, except I thought of it this way.
"you were never conceived from love" - I thought maybe a child was born out of sex or rape. sex isn't love. making love is love.
"They'll never see
I'll never be
I'll struggle on and on to feed this hunger" - this sounded like the mother being ridiculed for having a child out of wed-lock, being a single mother, or being mistaken for one because she was raped.
"But through my tears breaks a blinding light
Birthing a dawn to this endless night
Arms outstretched awaiting me" - seemed to me like deep inside she wanted to die because of all the pain.
The last couple of lines made me think she was talking to her child and telling them that she'll always protect them though.

Amy Lee has said multiple times that Evanescence are not a Christian band, so I don't understand why they'd write a song about Jesus.
I think that this is about that small voice inside your head that tells you that you're weak and unworthy of praise and affection.

"You will never be strong enough
You will never be good enough
You were never conceived in love
You will not rise above"

is the voice whispering sinisterly. In my opinion, anyway.

"They'll never see
I'll never be
I'll struggle on and on to feed this hunger
Burning deep inside of me"

Is the person acknowledging their doubts and believing them to be true.
I love this song so much, it's so dark and gothic ^_^

I think this song can mean that somebody is suffering from low self esteem, and hate themselves for all that they are. They have been hurt many times in their lives by the others, and they have condemned themselves to the belief that they're not worthy, and is hungered for a bit of love. (you're never be strong enough, you'll never be good enough, you were never conceived in love, you will not rise above.)

But then in the end, somebody comes and rescues them from their internal hell.

it's always interesting what people emphasize and ignore.

To me the song is about being hurt (in a relationship or just a friendship) and dealing with that; I have to say I find it interesting how the song starts hopeful but realistic " I fight for the chance to be lied to again", gets really negative and yet ends on a positive note.

I have to say if anything this sounds more like an analogy for life. Life lies to you and yet in order to live you must fight for that chance to be lied to again and eventually you'll find people that will be there for you. But unless you risk you can't gain anything

"Rest in me and I'll comfort you
I have lived and I died for you
Abide in me and I vow to you
I will never forsake you"

I think this part refers to taking comfort in depression itself, and how it can 'call' to you. It is sung menacingly rather than affectionately/caringly.

I love this song.

You will never be strong enough
You will never be good enough
You were never conceived in love
You will not rise above

They would be the most harshest words that you could say to anybody.

Evanescence arn't directly a christian band but i can see the religious parrallels in this song.
You will never be strong enough
You will never be good enough
You were never conceived in love
You will not rise above
They'll never see
I'll never be
I'll struggle on and on to feed this hunger
Burning deep inside of me...

This talks about thr human desire to give in to sin and that "you" meaning all of mankind will "never be strong enough" or "good enough" to be forgiven withouht god.
Yeah that's just my interpretation as a christian.
