Lyrics for Amsterdam as interpreted by devosize

Amsterdam Lyrics
Come on, oh my star is fading
And I swerve out of control
If I, if I'd only waited
I'd not be stuck here in this hole

Come here, oh my star is fading
And I swerve out of control
And I swear I waited and waited
I've got to get out of this hole

But time is on your side
It's on your side now
Not pushing you down
And all around
It's no cause for concern

Come on, oh my star is fading
And I see no chance of release
And I know I'm dead on the surface
But I am screaming underneath

And time is on your side
It's on your side now
Not pushing you down
And all around
Oh it's no cause for concern

Stuck on the end
Of this ball and chain
And I'm on my way back down again
Stood on the edge
Tied to the noose
Sick to the stomach
You can say what you mean
But it won't change a thing
I'm sick of the secrets
Stood on the edge
Tied to the noose
But you came along and you cut me loose

You came along and you cut me loose... (x3)

definitely one of the best coldplay songs to date... i think this song is about someone who is at the end of their rope, so to speak. the verses are just showing how little hope this person has, and in the final verse, there is even some reference to suicide. however, what i think is the best part about this song is that after all that dark hopelessness, the very last lines refer to this person being saved by either a friend, a love, or even God. it's a great song to listen to when you're down, because even when you're standing 'on the edge, tied to the noose' there is always someone who will come along and 'cut you loose'... coldplay rules!

To me this song is about a young person who has almost exhausted any and all hope they once had. The part about time being on your side refers to their age I believe. They look at life even from a young person's perspective and see that it will never get any better. Even though they swear they've waited and waited, people tell them they are too young to know anything. Tired of people being secretive and surpressed, he/she almost commits suicide before being rescued by someone from their depression.

I love this song, I'm seeing them in concert in June and I can't wait. This song is so beautiful, I really don't need to understand the meaning the mood it provokes is good enough for me.

This song, to me, is about a guy who is waiting for this girl who is not ready for a relationship. And he's waiting and waiting for her to make a decision, and the wait is tearing him apart. And I think he saying that if she keeps him waiting any longer he's going to explode. And maybe in the end she finally decides to be with him. And saves him before he self destructs.

Chris' voice just breaks my heart on this song ... not to mention his beautiful piano work ... oh, and Foo Fighter, it's called "Amsterdam" b/c that's where he wrote the song (according to their website).

For some reason I'm leaning towards Parachutes as their best CD... I'm not sure why... I guess cause i listened to it first, and the beat to it matches your heartbeat. You feel the music in your blood.

OmegusPrimer what the f*ck are you on about?
Amsterdam is a beautiful song i agree definitely and i think that Rush Of Blood is a much richer and brighter album than Parachutes, although Coldplay generally are soooo amazing. This song just cleans and rounds off the album perfectly.

this song is so beautiful, and i think its about getting yourself in a what seemed like a good situation at the time, but then in the end it was a bad stiuation, and you cant get out, and frustration eventually just turns to anger, and then the people or things in that bad situation dont even care, and they dont help you at all......"cut me loose".......yea, that doesnt make very much sense...im just rambling...

i have just listened to this song and i was on the ground sobbing uncontrolably by the end and i am barely hanging together as i write this. I suppose i feel like im on the edge tied to the noose. but i havent got anyone around to cut me loose. it just goes to show music really can move you. especially this beautifully written piece.

its about somebody whos been lost, searching for something. and they've been trying too hard to find something that they just ended up in the worst spot they could be. they feel like their stranded and hung up by nothing but lost hopes and all the bad stuff that they have unintentionally built up. but then they meet someone who changes it forever. they set them free from al the worries, fears, and other bad things that have holding them down from living their life.

I've listened to this song with a couple of my friends and I think they were touched by this tune as well. Personally, I think there is certain universality to this song. Everyone has been in a spot where they were down and they couldn't see the light at the end of the tunnel. The imagery in this song: the sickness being tied to a ball and chain that is threatening to take you over the threshold is very powerful and I certainly have been a patch in my life like this.

I think the big question is what set that person loose. Well what it was is referred to as a person; this fits in well with the theme of some of Coldplay’s work. I do think they may be referring to drugs as the savior as the title “Amsterdam” does in a roundabout way suggest. I will end the speculation there as the general theme of this piece is apparent and I think the significance of the lack of a direct reference does entail the savior of this person’s psyche’ could be just about anything.

Overall very relatable, a great and touching tune. Also I love the part where the whole band kicks in, it’s really driving and perfectly suits that portion of the song.
