Heaven sent the promised land
Looks alright from where I stand
'Cause I'm the man on the outside looking in

Waiting on the first step
Show where the key is kept
Point me down the right line because it's time

To let me in from the cold
Turn my lead into gold
'Cause there's chill wind blowing in my soul
And I think I'm growing old

Flash the readies
Wot's...uh the deal?
Got to make to the next meal
Try to keep up with the turning of the wheel.

Mile after mile
Stone after stone
Turn to speak but you're alone
Million mile from home you're on your own

So let me in from the cold
Turn my lead into gold
'Cause there's chill wind blowing in my soul
And I think I'm growing old

Fire bright by candlelight
And her by my side
And if she prefers we will never stir again

Someone said the promised land
And I grabbed it with both hands
Now I'm the man on the inside looking out

Hear me shout "Come on in,
What's the news and where you been?"
'Cause there's no wind left in my soul
And I've grown old

General Comment:It's about the passing of time and the meaningless of existence like alot of Floyd songs. As you get older, you are searching for acceptance and feel an outsider. But when age is achieved, you feel less alone but are now old and the adventure that was the search for acceptance to begin with is gone.

My Interpretation:I see it as a young man growing up, the promised land being home and family. He's on the outside looking in--still single. "Flash the readies", a big smile, while he works to pay his bills. But he's alone, no one to talk to.
Then the promised land comes to him, and he grabs it with both hands. He takes comfort by the fire, next to his love. So comforting it is, that he says, "If she prefers, we will never stir again."
Now he is on the inside looking out. In his old age, he shouts a hearty greeting to friends that come visiting.

General Comment:To me this song is about a man growing older and having to let go of things and he is upset about it buth at the and he embraces it thats why he's the man looking out frm the inside but he's all like how've you been welcoming his past back for a visit whether it is memories or a physical being. I'm getting married and using this for father daughter dance. Im probably wrong about te meaning but it does fit well. like he's afraid of getting old and giving away his past but then it isn't so bad getting old...

    Lyric Correction:I'm pretty sure it's:

    "Night after night
    stone after stone
you turn to speak but you're alone
million miles from home your on your own"

and I believe the stone after stone part refers to being high each night to cope with the sorrow of the love interest being absent.

General Comment:I think it's about this man on his deathbed, waiting at the steps of heaven; [Heaven said the promised land] and [Waiting on the first step, Show me where the key is kept, Point me down the right line because it's time]

Then; [Flash the red is wots...uh the deal] he sees a flash of hell and thinks, "What was that? I don't want that." So; [Got to make it to the next meal] he goes back to reality to continue living for longer, to delay going to hell.

And; [Turn my lead into gold] being... one of the great things that happens in heaven that he's wanting and waiting for.

Song Meaning:For me the song "Wots the Deal" is about forlornness after job loss, and the desperation, poverty and lack of shelter that results. But I don't know what "flash the readies" means. Does anyone?

General Comment:I think it's about a guy wanting his girlfriend to try LSD (acid) "if she prefer we need never stir again"
people will find this odd. remember it was 1970.

General Comment:I absolutely love this song. It seems to be about the progression "the promised land" is a family and wealth. In the beginning he is young and comes home out of the cold and shares his adventures with his family about being "a million miles from home" He eventually acquires the "promised land" and he's on the inside looking out, so then his son comes home and he eagerly asks "what's the news where you been?" So he has acquired the promised land but grown old in the process.
