I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."

I am shocked and appalled that no-one has commented on this song. For me it's one of Springsteens best. I think it is plainly obvious that this song is about old friends.
I hold this song very personally. I have a very strong group of friends who I grew up with, we went through puberty together discovered beer and women together, good times/bad times and great times. In recent years we have drifted apart somewhat "we got our own roads to ride, and chances we gotta take". Every so often I call up one of these guys and we talk about old times, and I wonder if we will have the same relationship as we used to or if we will be strangers, I think this is reflected in the lyric "I don't even know whay, I don't know why I made this call, or if any of this matters any more after all".

paddy is 100% correct, but you left out a BIG detail. the song refers to Bruce and Miami Steve, and their old friendship.
For me its about gorwing up. How the daily grind erodes and chips away at you, but deep inside that little core of belief, dream, hope, lives on. Just as the people who you have forged, and rekindled, those dreams with, live on inside you, even if you are impossibly far apart. Its heartbreaking and beautiful.
What it is saying is that whatever happens, including death, he will always have a place in his heart for him. they will always be "Blood Brothers"
Iread something off the Springsteen website a while back that explained the opening with Blood Brothers the concert after the death of Dan Federici. It went something like this. The stage was set up as Dan was going to appear, the arena went black, The band came out and started playing blood brothers,while pictures of Dan were being showed on the screen. the whole song there was a spotlite on dans spot and stuff. The band cried while bruce and the band tried to get every note out. at the end of the song Bruce let out a scream of pain as he spotlight went out.

I saw the second concert the band did (April 25, 2008 in Atlanta) after Danny's death. Here is how it went: The lights went out, and Danny's face appeared on huge screens above the stage. Blood Brothers began to play on the PA (not live). A single spotlight was on Danny's keyboard. In the dark, you could just barely see the band taking the stage, and they stood and watched the video as it played scenes from Danny's life and years with the band. The entire song played through, and then as it ended, the stage lights came on, and Bruce launched into "Reason to Believe" on the harmonica, flailing around the stage like a madman. From there it was Radio Nowhere and on into the show. What a great night. I'll never hear Blood Brothers the same way again, and the song is even better for me now. By the way, there is video of this on YouTube, if you search for "Springsteen Danny tribute" or something like that.

This song is definitely about old friends, but in particular for Bruce; The E Street Band. Bruce's departure from the E Street Band in the late 80's led to the song being written. Before the album Greatest Hits was recorded in 1995, Bruce wrote Blood Brothers about being reunited with all of his friends that he hadn't worked with for a few years. It is very apparent when the lyrics are dissected and interpreted.
Incredible and powerful lyrics. Brings a tear to my eye when I hear it and remenis the good old days with my best friends
