Lyrics for Early Sunsets Over Monroeville as interpreted by Savant

Early Sunsets Over Monroeville Lyrics
Late dawns and early sunsets
Just like my favorite scenes
Then holding hands
And life was perfect
Just like up on the screen
And the whole time while always giving
Counting your face among the living
Up and down escalators
Pennies and colder fountains
Elevators and half price sales
Trapped in by all these mountains
Running away and hiding with you
I never thought they'd get me here
Not knowing you'd change from just one bite
I fought them all off just to hold you close and tight

But does anyone notice?
But does anyone care?
And if I had the guts to put this to your head
But would anything matter if you're already dead?
And should I be shocked now by the last thing you said?
Before I pull this trigger
Your eyes vacant and stained

But does anyone notice?
But does anyone care?
And if I had the guts to put this to your head
And would anything matter if you're already dead?
And now should I be shocked by the last thing you said?
Before I pull this trigger
Your eyes vacant and stained
And in saying you loved me
Made things harder at best
And these words changing nothing
As your body remains
And there's no room in this hell
There's no room in the next
And our memories deafeat us
And I'll end this direst

But does anyone notice?
But does anyone care?
And if I had the guts to put this to your head
But would anything matter if you're already dead?
And should I be shocked now by the last thing you said?
Before I pull this trigger
Your eyes vacant and stained
And in saying you loved me
Made things harder at best
And these words changing nothing
As your body remains
And there's no room in this hell
There's no room in the next
But does anyone notice there's a corpse in this bed?

Ok so far from what i've been reading, you have basically been relating this to Dawn of the Dead. Yes, the lyrics match really well with the movie but I believe that it goes deeper than "ya it's kinda like a soundtrack-but not". I think Gerard wrote this to "K" as he referred to her in I brought you bullets, you brought me your love. I looked at this song very figuratively so you can criticise me as much as you want but its my own interpretation:
(Late dawns and early sunsets
Just like my favorite scenes
Then holding hands
And life was perfect) Ok, here Gerard is describing him and K's relationship of how it was like a movie where you're happy and everything is going on great between them.
Just like up on the screen
(And the whole time while always giving
Counting your face among the living) and the whole time he was always giving as much as he can and she would be the only face he would see "among the living" will be tied up towards the conclusion at the end.
(Up and down escalators
Pennies and colder fountains) Up and down's in life, pennies-luck colder fountains-bad luck
(Elevators and half price sales
Trapped in by all these mountains) They are trying to get somewhere but they seem trapped by something bigger than them
(Running away and hiding with you
I never thought they'd get me here) just being with her and hiding with her did not change the fact that the "mountains" would still surface and find him.
(Not knowing you'd change from just one bite
I fought them all off just to hold you close and tight) Not knowing she'd change from just one "bite" means that an obstacle whether big or not changed her, and he tried to fight them all off to keep the relationship together.

But does anyone notice?
But does anyone care?
(And if I had the guts to put this to your head) If he had the guts to end it all, to hurt her.
(But would anything matter if you're already dead?
And should I be shocked now by the last thing you said?) Would it do any good if she's cold and bitter to him? He expects the worst out of her now.
(Before I pull this trigger) before i hurt you
(Your eyes vacant and stained) her eyes seem empty.

(But does anyone notice?
But does anyone care?) He cuts off here as if having second doubts of hurting, trying to see that if what he has to say would have any sort of impact or affect on her
And if I had the guts to put this to your head
And would anything matter if you're already dead?
And now should I be shocked by the last thing you said?
Before I pull this trigger
Your eyes vacant and stained
(And in saying you loved me
Made things harder at best) he continues on saying that ending everything with her makes it so much harder when he knows that she loved/ loves him
(And these words changing nothing
As your body remains) saying she loves him doesnt change the fact that while her body remains, she is dead inside basically.
(And there's no room in this hell
There's no room in the next) there's no more room for hurt anymore in the torment of their relationship
(And our memories deafeat us) he can't forget everything they had and he feels like their memories of what they HAD is winning over what they have now.
(And I'll end this direst) direst comes from the word dire which is basically something disasterous.

(But does anyone notice?
But does anyone care?) Do you even care that if..
And if I had the guts to put this to your head
But would anything matter if you're already dead?
And should I be shocked now by the last thing you said?
Before I pull this trigger
Your eyes vacant and stained
And in saying you loved me
Made things harder at best
And these words changing nothing
As your body remains
And there's no room in this hell
There's no room in the next
(But does anyone notice there's a corpse in this bed? ) Does she notice that because of her, he's dead as well? That's why in the begining he said "among the living". He felt dead before he met her, and among the living all he saw was her but now since she completely changed, he's back to being dead again, incomplete. Hope this interpretation makes things a little more clear for the other ppl who want to read other interpretations besides Dawn of the Dead which I do think is really good but I'm relating it to Gerard.

well the first time i heard this song and really listened to the lyrics i thort it related to the story gerard made up for the 2nd album '3 cheers for sweet revenge'

you no. about a man and a woman who fleed their town only to return and the town was full of vampires.

and she ends up getting bitten and he knows he has to kill her and eventually does.

like you no.

'vampires will never hurt you'

the lead up. saying 'if they get me, will you steak my heart?'

but linker's description of how gerard wud have felt really does make sence.

and ive never seen dawn of the dead.

but thats just the first thing that came to mind. just from that album and the next.

but im probably wrong anyway. =\

.xox

Dawn Of The Dead all the way; gotta love it. This song is so beautiful...It's difficult to imagine what it must feel like to have to pull the trigger on someone you truly care for, someone who loves you... Such a beautiful song...

I remember hearing this song for the first time and thinking 'wow' after. Probably my favourite MCR tune.

Gerard's voice is so full of emotion at the end, and the music is so jaunty-like at first (considering the morbid subject matter). What also makes this song great is that it's based on Dawn of the Dead which is an awesome movie (the orig anyway)!

I love this song and think it would be so romantic if your boyfriend was an awesome singer and he sang it to you for a birthday or something! This song is a romantic song about the movie 'Dawn Of The Dead'.I havent seen it or 'Astro Zombies',which has a song written about it, originally written by The Misfits(who i love!!!) and MCR took it and sung it and put it on Life On The Muder Scene.

For all those people who said it isn't from the DotD movie, it is only HALF true; I may be wrong, becuase a song may have multiple meanings.
Gerard probably got inspired by it, hence, quoting a line or two from the movie.
However, he made up some scenario about his girl getting bitten by a zombie, and in many zombie movies, they can turn into "one of them" (Resident Evil, anyone?). "Gerard" is having a hard time deciding to kill the one he loves; Becuase she is now a zombie.

Of course, some people are more into the metaphorical aspect, and I think both definitions are correct.
Songs can be both "what you see is what you get" and have a deeper meaning. Anything that makes sense in either those two are right, to me. Whether it's a relationship gone sour for Gerard, or some fictional "zombie movie" song.

It really sounds to me like there are 2 people singing on this song, I recognise Gerard's voice at the end but does someone else start off singing?

This song would always remind of the Vampire theme that MCR puts out so well. It wasn't until someone else's DotD interpretation that made me realize.

Gerard loved the Misfits and Glenn Danzig would often write songs based purely off old horror movies. I think this is Gerard's own attempt at doing so, and an awesome one at that.

Well i think in the begining he's saying how everything was good in their relationship, and he's starting to fall in love with her. He keeps refrencing to elevators which signifies things are getting a little bit rocky, her mood or their relationiship is going up and down. "Trapped in by all these mountains means that there are obstacles prevetnting things from improving. when he says 'running away and hiding with you' , it means he tried to help her feel better and run away from her problems. "i never thought they'd get me here means that whatever he tried to do to help her didn't work and her demons have returned. the bite part means that something tiny set the girl off again. "I fought them all of just to hold you close and tight" means he's fighting her depression or whatever so they can be together peacefully. In the next part of the song he realizes that his efforts are in vain because the girl is dead inside. She has been numb for so long that he starts to wonder if anyone would care if she died. He also says that her saying that she loves him doesn't matter because she has no feelings, and doesn't make anything better anymore.
Anyway thats just my interpetation of it, and kinda the story of my life

I didn't really like this song. It was cool and everything at the start, but when Gerard started singing really passionately, the other instruments didn't really..."match up" with him, so it kind of wrecked it. I mean the first time I heard this, I was expecting it to get louder but yeah, I was dissapointed.

Sorry folks.

Not that i know him or anything, but there is the fact that Gerard way was worried about the death of his loved ones and everyone around him and dying alone (or so i've heard). So when i listened to this song... When i REALLY listened, i found that maybe that he was trying to say what's the use in his living if his loved one(s) are already dead... that's what came up for me... but some of the answers here sound great too, so really, who knows
