Lyrics for Early Sunsets Over Monroeville as interpreted by Savant

Early Sunsets Over Monroeville Lyrics
Late dawns and early sunsets
Just like my favorite scenes
Then holding hands
And life was perfect
Just like up on the screen
And the whole time while always giving
Counting your face among the living
Up and down escalators
Pennies and colder fountains
Elevators and half price sales
Trapped in by all these mountains
Running away and hiding with you
I never thought they'd get me here
Not knowing you'd change from just one bite
I fought them all off just to hold you close and tight

But does anyone notice?
But does anyone care?
And if I had the guts to put this to your head
But would anything matter if you're already dead?
And should I be shocked now by the last thing you said?
Before I pull this trigger
Your eyes vacant and stained

But does anyone notice?
But does anyone care?
And if I had the guts to put this to your head
And would anything matter if you're already dead?
And now should I be shocked by the last thing you said?
Before I pull this trigger
Your eyes vacant and stained
And in saying you loved me
Made things harder at best
And these words changing nothing
As your body remains
And there's no room in this hell
There's no room in the next
And our memories deafeat us
And I'll end this direst

But does anyone notice?
But does anyone care?
And if I had the guts to put this to your head
But would anything matter if you're already dead?
And should I be shocked now by the last thing you said?
Before I pull this trigger
Your eyes vacant and stained
And in saying you loved me
Made things harder at best
And these words changing nothing
As your body remains
And there's no room in this hell
There's no room in the next
But does anyone notice there's a corpse in this bed?

To be honest I can't see how there can be much debate about this song. But everyone has their own opinions so I guess its ok. But the meaning is pretty simple.

The song is based on the movie Dawn of the Dead like many people have said. The film was made in the Munroeville Mall which is probobly where the title was taken from.

Basically the meaning is:
A man and woman are running away from the zombies but the woman gets bitten by a zombie, and as hard as it is, the man has to kill her before she kills him.

(can't remember the exact names from the film, as i havent watched it in a while)

Another peice of evidence (someone has said this already) is that one line is actually the tag line from the original 1978 film. The line from the song is 'And there's no room in this hell' and the tagline is 'When there's no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth.'

Hope this helps :)

If you watched the movie, this entire song would make a whole lot of sense. Instead of you all just guessing at what it means. I was a zombie fan before a MCR fan, so that explains a lot.

In the 1978 version of Dawn of the Dead, Francine and Stephen are lovers, and she's pregnant. Just before Stephen is bitten, they sit down to a nice dinner, and he asks her to marry him. This song is obviously what's going through Francine's head.

I'm surprised nobody has said anything about this.
I don't think this has anything to do with the meaning of this song by the way.
But, if you take the song more literally, like thinking vampire-wise and other things of that nature, it gives a vague description of the twilight series, by Stephenie Meyer. Taken in more literal form, of course; Like I had mentioned earlier, the song talks about lovers, one of which seeming to be a vampire, or some creature of the 'walking dead'. And in the twilight series, it is about two lovers: Edward, being a vampire, and Bella, being a mortal love interest of his. And in the song, it sort of talks about protecting the love, which is which Edward does the entire time in the twilight series.

But in all acuality, this song has two parts to the meaning of it. True; I do believe it is based on Dawn of the Dead, being merely and inspiration. I think mainly, these are thoughts in Gerard's head, or maybe even a real life experience. About him, and his love interest. Personally, I think My Chemical Romance has much more talent at writing songs then people give credit for. Most people who call them emo and stupid have only heard theuir most populated songs, which still have deeper meanings: if people would take the time to actually read and comprehend the lyrics.

Ok, this probably won't make any sence to you, but this music has a special meaning for me:
Do you know that time in your life when you were with that special person and everything was happily ever after? If you understand what I'm talking about you know that you never forget that person. Even if you dont love her anymore (if that person is "already death") she hunts you. You'll compare everyone that comes next to her. And above all, you'll always miss what you to had. That's why it hurts so mutch. Will you ever move on?

Ok, trying to explain myself better:

So, life was perfect with that person. You could really count on her, she was there.
Something happens, both of you change, and eventually break up. It hurts a lot because you really though that person was your soulmate (“I never thought they'd get me here” -> I never imagined it would happen to us) But it happens, that’s where life takes us, people change and grow apart.

You break up, you date another people. That person is dead to you, you’re able to love again. But you never really moved on. No one notices, no one cares, you put an happy smile on your face. But you cant stop yourself from remembering those happy days (And our memories deafeat us).

Now, there are two interpretations for the pull the trigger part (both happened to me, so…). You broke up with him.. You killed your relationship. Even if he said “I loved you” in the end, your relationship wasn’t going anywhere. Even so, you kind of regret this because you really used to be happy together.
Other interpretation is that you find that person some months/years later, and she says she’s still in love with you. Maybe she isn’t, maybe she just missed what you had. But you miss her to. So, are you going to be able to completely break up with that person? And if so, will you regret it forever?

Is this corpse going to be forever in your bed?

-> This is so personal to me that I dont know if you got my point. please, answer if you can see this in the lyrics too x)

Just so everyone knows, this song is about Dawn Of The Dead.
Hence the, "Running away and hiding with you
I never thought they'd get me here
Not knowing you'd change from just one bite
I fought them all off just to hold you close and tight"
as in he's hiding from the undead, he didn't know they would be able to get to him inside, and that he didn't know that the girl he was with would change into the undead just because one bit her, and he was trying to save him a herself.
"And if I had the guts to put this to your head
But would anything matter if you're already dead?"
He has to kill the girl he is with to save himself but he doesn't want to, (just watch the movie you'll get it or even Shawn Of The Dead)
and he means that he doesn't think it 'matters' because she is already the undead.
"But does anyone notice? But does anyone care?"
as in everyone is either the undead or in hiding and they dont care about anyone's lives but themselves, and he is saying how no one cares about the situation he is in. etc.

It's about Dawn Of The Dead.

If someone already said this, kudos to you, but it kinda seems that none of you realize that it's not nessasarily how Gerard feels, and that is no reason to wan to kill yourself.

[I may seem like I'm anti-MCR, but hun. I'm their biggest fan, so it's just my opinion on how you kids are handling this song.]

Monroeville was the mall that all the people hid from the zombies in "Dawn of the Dead" and at the begging its just talking about the mall and the couple having a good time wealking around the mall then the zombies come. Then holding hands
"And life was perfect
Just like up on the screen
And the whole time while always giving
Counting your face among the living
Up and down escalators
Pennies and colder fountains
Elevators and half price sales "

then as she gets bit he knows he must shoot her but obviously is having trouble with it and is argueing with himself shes already dead and when she says i love you right before he does it, like in all zombie movies, it makes it that much harder to shoot her. And if I had the guts to put this to your head
And would anything matter if you're already dead?
And now should I be shocked by the last thing you said?
"Before I pull this trigger
Your eyes vacant and stained
And in saying you loved me
Made things harder at best"

then as he must pull the trigger, there is no room in this hell (meaning being on earth) and theres no room in the next (meaning in hell) because in the movie it says, "when theres no room left in hell, the dead shall walk the earth"
then here are the ending lyrics that pretty much confirm what i said~
"And in saying you loved me
Made things harder at best
And these words changing nothing
As your body remains
And there's no room in this hell
There's no room in the next
But does anyone notice there's a corpse in this bed?"

This song gives me so much the feeling of the city. It so feels like it was written by a person who was being swallowed by the city. I can almost see the gray buildings and the mountains outside the city...

Gerard said that lots of their songs use metaphors, like Vampires Will Never Hurt You, is obviously about vampires, but there is more behind it. Gerard said he was in a very loving relationship at the time so yes, it's about Dawn of the Dead, but there's a story behind it.

But I stilll wanto to give my opinion about the song, I think the song is about Dawn of the dead, like many others on the site, because i have seen it and when you think about it .. it all fits together, although i also thin kthat you can interpated this to anything you like.., So I also think that this could be about killing someone you love nit because they are zombies but also if they are killers or rapist or w.e .. meaning that they have turned into monsters.. but I dunno . Just my opinion (:

I see two meanings top this song, the Dawn of the Dead one that most of you have been talking about, and the one I thought of the first few times I heard it.

The feeling I got when I first heard this song (before I saw Dawn of the Dead) was that this boy has gone crazy and wants to get him and his girlfriend out of the world that's become more like a hell. ('there's no room in this hell/there's no room in the next'.) So he kills them both, thinking that it'll be better if they were dead - it's hard, because he's remembering all the times they shared ('And our memories defeat us/And I'll end this direst') and she's begging him not to kill her ('and in saying you loved me/made things harder at best' and 'should I be shocked now/By the last thing you said'). But eventually he does it. ('But does anyone notice? There's a corpse in this bed.)

I always feel like when I listen to this song it would be the perfect music playing in the background when you are going on an emotional break.
Your eyes overflowing with tears, blurred vision, holding a cold gun to your signficate other's head.
LongForBlueSkies is absolutely right.

I don't know what a lot of this song is about or what it could mean, but giving it a glace from a poetic romantic tragic sort of point of view I'd say, it's about loving somebody and nolonger seeing the point to anything if they don't feel the same.......
Some people take a selfish sort of way to cope with knowing they're the only person in love of the two, and they consider them worthless to attempt to even out the hurt.
I'm completely off, most likely, but that's just what it seemed like to me...
