Lyrics for Early Sunsets Over Monroeville as interpreted by Savant

Early Sunsets Over Monroeville Lyrics
Late dawns and early sunsets
Just like my favorite scenes
Then holding hands
And life was perfect
Just like up on the screen
And the whole time while always giving
Counting your face among the living
Up and down escalators
Pennies and colder fountains
Elevators and half price sales
Trapped in by all these mountains
Running away and hiding with you
I never thought they'd get me here
Not knowing you'd change from just one bite
I fought them all off just to hold you close and tight

But does anyone notice?
But does anyone care?
And if I had the guts to put this to your head
But would anything matter if you're already dead?
And should I be shocked now by the last thing you said?
Before I pull this trigger
Your eyes vacant and stained

But does anyone notice?
But does anyone care?
And if I had the guts to put this to your head
And would anything matter if you're already dead?
And now should I be shocked by the last thing you said?
Before I pull this trigger
Your eyes vacant and stained
And in saying you loved me
Made things harder at best
And these words changing nothing
As your body remains
And there's no room in this hell
There's no room in the next
And our memories deafeat us
And I'll end this direst

But does anyone notice?
But does anyone care?
And if I had the guts to put this to your head
But would anything matter if you're already dead?
And should I be shocked now by the last thing you said?
Before I pull this trigger
Your eyes vacant and stained
And in saying you loved me
Made things harder at best
And these words changing nothing
As your body remains
And there's no room in this hell
There's no room in the next
But does anyone notice there's a corpse in this bed?

ok nevermind. Its kinda got more than one meaning to me. It's like he's imagining what would happen if the situation was real. At least thats how i see it.

OMG OMG.. IM SO SURPRISED NO ONE HAS COMMENTED ON THIS SONG!!
The lyrics are amazing, and the meaning of the songs is again brilliant.
Well personally i think the song is all about, love and death. Let me explain...

The song starts of by setting the scene by saying "Late dawns and early sunsets, just like my favorite scenes
Then holding hands and life was perfect, just like up on the screen"

Then Gerard then says...
"And the whole time while always giving
Counting your face among the living" this cud mean that the whole senery is perfect, but there is a doubt in the back of his head, about how long it will stay this perfect, and how long she will be alive.

Next.. the lyrics go on to say....."But does anyone notice?
But does anyone care?
And if I had the guts to put this to your head...
But would anything matter if you're already dead?
And should I be shocked now by the last thing you said?
Before I pull this trigger,
Your eyes vacant and stained..."

These lines could mean that the man in this story (cud be Gerard way himself) can see that is love of his life is slowly dying inside, so if he had the guts to put this to her head, wud anything matter coz shes already dead, thats saying.. shes been mentally dead inside for a while now, so even if the man did atcually physically kill her (gunshot to the head) it may not even matter.

(These lines are repeated a number of times each time with a more anger sound to the words, this gives of a huge effect of anger and pain)

And right at the end of the song, it mentions..

"And there's no room in this hell,
There's no room in the next,
But does anyone notice there's a corpse in this bed?"

This is one of the most touching lines i have ever heard in a song, plus its the last 3 lines, which makes it have an even bigger effect on the listener..
It means That his love is now dead, but theres no room in this hell (earth.. hell on earth) and theres no room in the next (hell as in heaven and hell).. therefore the lyrics are saying the girl is in the state of change between life and death... next the lyrics say, but does anyone notcice but does anyone care theres a corpse in this bed..( no body has realiezed that shes dead, and it seems that no body cares, that shes lying dead in his bed)

Just my theory?!

Thanks...

-Leah

i get the whole meaning of the song but when i first heard this song about a year and a half ago i heard the start and almost skipped ahaead because i didn't like it that much and i didn't even think it was MCR (which was kinda dumbass in retrospect considering it was their album) but the second half of the song is brilliant and its probably my favourite song on that album.

apart from its deep meaning, this song is pretty much their worst work so far.

Notice how this song (my favourite MCR song), which is one of their best and from their first album, has hardly any comments on it wheras "Im not ok" gets overloaded? Not fair :( Why is it that what has to be their worst ever song gets all the publicity? (p.s- im not a "omg i hate mainstream" person either

I'm kinda seeing that there's a lot of possible interpretations for this song, and that doesn't mean any of them are neccicarily wrong.. thats what makes a song good, the fact that they can make it relevant to them.

but my favorite thing about this song that I've heard so far StarsLeadOurWay3 posted back in '03.. along the lines of being with a girl who you see as perfection in human form, the epitome of femininty, the meaning of your life- and whether you're with her or whether you're not, knowing that you don't mean anything like that to them... hence the line 'corpse in this bed', does anyone notice, etc... does anyone, especially this girl notice, what she's doing to you inside, killing you inside, etc.
and then with the
And if I had the guts to put this to your head
But would anything matter if you're already dead?
i think is saying that he can tell her what she means to him a million times, like what he's singing about, but she won't ever truly understand... not even if he put a gun to her head- and in this way, she's already dead to him.
This sorta ties in with the whole dawn of the dead shit too... kind of? =S with 'already dead'...
and Gerad sounds like he's practically crying towards the end of this song... I agree with B12 in that it definitely means a lot more to him and his life than some crappy movie

maybe something to do with the same girl he liked back in high school...? who comes into 'I'm not ok' as the girl who sent him a bunch of slutty photographs
(photographs your boyfriend took)
and got him all upset...
I don't know if its anything similiar, it would be kinda cool if it was. Who knows... MCRs a fucking awesome band, anyway.

I love this song so much because of its extreme intensity. each time he repeats the verse it gets more and more intense and by the end of it he sounds like he is about to cry (which by then I am completely bawling). There really are no words to describe this song. It is just beautiful. I agree with Tashadragon that im not okay which in my opinion doesn't have very moving lyrics and is probably one of their less good (but still completely amazing) songs gets all the attention and media when the completely beautiful and in my opinion the best songs by them gets less than a page of comments. IT ISNT FAIR. but this song is more unique and not everyone has the patience to sit through an entire 5 minute song and would rather just listen to and easy to listen to catchy song. And i too am not a mainsteam hater.

to put it simply although IM NOT OKAY being mainstream will attract more people to MCR and they will eventually find EARLY SUNSETS OVER MONROEVILLE. this song has lots of memories for me (it was the first song i learnt on guitar!!!) among others it is a perfect example of how mainstream people overlook the better songs for sake of popularity.

Hey you there :-)

first i have to apologize for my english, actually i'm german and hardly trying to write a good comment.
i almost read through all of your comments and i'm amazed - after hearing the album (and this song) first i didn't know the deeper meanings.

-about your discussion whether the song is about or with some connections to dawn of the dead, i'd die to analyze it, but i won't find that movie in english here - i would have to buy it and that all for this song.. (don't like zombie movies that much!) i don't know if it's worth it and if i'd posess it - who knows i would understand? ;-)

-some of you say, mcr is a band that sucks and that they are untalentated..
..how could they, if even someone who doesn't know much about english can feel what they're saying and hears emotions out of this excellent song?
i think that's what a perfect band exists of.. singing with real feelings - and when the singer (almost) screams "But does anyone care?" that is the moment it hurts your heart (at least mine :o)

-so in my opinion it is one of the most beautiful lovesongs

(Sorry again for my bad english, at the beginning i even thought of the title - "Early Sunsets Over Monroeville" - that it is about Marylin Monroe, dying without love and alone - in fact there's a light light light parallel ;-))

Ok, i just found this site and it helps me so much. but anyway, i just wanted to say that this song is amazing and I can listen to it for hours again and again. i haven't seen the movie, but i'm not into zombie movies and such, but i am so into My Chem. I think that the songs B12 mentioned were some of my favorites, but i also think that their first album is a bit better, although i love all of it. I adore it, it's like an audio anti-depressant.

I can't say "it not about the movie" cause it is. but also, (I think) there is an alternate meaning in the song. he's putting a gun to his ex-girlfriend's head. but not literally ofcourse, he's trying to kill her in his mind, removing from his heart and want to forget all the memories about her. but he can't. not that easily. but he wish he could cause says "if i had the guts." he says "by the last thing you said?" this is probably "i loved you" or any other sort of word that can be painful say while breaking up.cause later he says "and in saying you loved me", well it changes nothing after you dumped. once she's gone, it only remains as a bad memory after all..

I'm looking a bit too emotional to this song cause MCR and especially "Early Sunsets Over Monroeville" is really important to me. whenever I listen it, I imagine myself putting a sixshooter to her head..and evertime I try I fail to pull the goddamn trigger, and in the end putting it to my own head and then...

Hoping I'm the first to point this out, though it might have already been said: That line about "Counting your face among the living" is probably a reference to the Album 'Among The Living' by Anthrax. The album cover on that has one cheery character amongst a sea of dead zombie like characters; so this line could be an inference to how this song is also about the person described here being the only person alive amonst so many dead or dying people?
