My take - a relationship that cannot be. Mibbe he thought in his head he could make it work, but for whatever reason can't give that person what they need and realises that while he wants her, thus far he's survived without her and will no doubt continue to do so, and by accepting that it'll become easier for both of them.

I think its about liking someone that you shouldn't, you don't want to like them but you can't stop thinking about them, their like a weakness to you and you don't like the feeling of needing them so badly.
It seems asif he is talking about first love, " Whats up with my heart when it skips a beat?" the feeling you get when you see someone and they make you happy just by seeing them but if it is your first love you aren't use to feeling like that and its scary!
Allthough the songs seens happy it is sad in away as the person really loves another person but can't be with them.
