He was the wizard of a thousand kings,
And I chanced to meet him one night wandering.
He told me tales, and he drank my wine,
Me and my magic man kinda feelin' fine.

He had a cloak of gold and eyes of fire,
And as he spoke I felt a deep desire,
To free the world from it's fear and pain,
And help the people to feel free again.

Why don't we listen to the voices in our hearts
'cause then I know we'd find that we're not so far apart.
Everybody's got to be happy. Everyone should sing,
For we know the joy of life, the peace that love can bring.

So spoke the wizard in his mountain home.
The vision of his wisdom means we'll never be alone.
And I will dream of my magic night,
And the million silver stars that guide me with their light.

General Comment:I think this a song that everyone can or at least should try to relate to, despite their beliefs. I don't believe in any God, particularly because I find most religious people to be hypocritical and harmful to the society at large due to their intolerance and ignorance of modern science and people different than them, so I don't personally agree that it's about Jesus. To me, this song simply describes a wondrous person with deep empathy and wisdom who hasn't lost his idealism even in the face of hardships and cynical, apathetic people.

I also don't believe that it's about homosexuality, but would it be that wrong even if it was? I don't mean that each and every closer relationship between men has to be somehow homoerotic, but it won't make the world collapse even if it was something more than just "brotherly/friendly love".

General Comment:I agree that the early Heep songs were about spiritual matters. Maybe this one too. I have loved the song since this lp was released. I remember buying it, taking it home, and playing it immediately and this song was one that has stayed with me almost 40 years. So much of this sounds like Biblical terminology. the second stanza actually almost souds like something out of the Revelation. I think I must agree that the wizard represents Jesus.

Song Meaning:The wizard is Jesus. The song is about a spiritual awakening to the message of love and peace, with Jesus as a guide and bearer of this message. In my experience, a wizard is often used in literature and music to represent Jesus.

General Comment:When i was a little tiny girl, I just knew there was more to life than RELIGION was telling me. I would just go inside my head and say, "that's ok they will learn someday." As I got older I wasn't so sure any more. I kept to my belief in Wizards and knew I was like one.

When I was twelve I met an old, old wizard-looking man with long white hair and beard. He told us he belived that we live many lives, perfecting our souls until we become Master Teachers and then we don't have to come back to earth unless we choose to, usually to help mankind in some higher way.

These were the things I knew as a tiny girl. No one ever told them to me. I just knew them.

To me he was the Wizard telling me to listen to the voice in my heart. The kindness and the -want-for-nothing attitude he had gave me a peace with myself that I am able to still tap into.

Thank you, Gandalf, for appearing to me in my lifetime. May all of you out there me your Wizard too.

General Comment:When I listen to this song I can imagine myself walking with Gandalf, before sitting down by a warm fire, sharing wine and talking. He's telling me that we are all one people. He tells me not to hate but to love my fellow man and that if we all have love then the world can be a truly beautiful place...

General Comment:This song is about helping others, a lot of Classic Rock bands in the 70's based their songs on Medievel and Antiquity stories, plus they were probably stoned to oblivion.

General Comment:I always think of Gandalf from Lord Of The Rings Fame. He was the kind of guy that inspired others, earned thier interest, respect, loyalty, and love.

If a brother can have a place in your heart, why not a friend? Nothin' homosexual about that, now is there?

General Comment:Well, the song makes reference to the "protagonist" wandering. So, The Wizard could be this person that the protagonist has met along the way and has shared some drinks and swapped some tales with and since he's been wandering for so long he's found so much life and interest in this "Wizard".

So I think the song is about how you can meet someone who will capture your interest and someone you can have a drink with after so long without meeting any interesting people.
