Sunrise, sunset, sunrise, sunset, swiftly go the days
Sunrise, sunset, you wake up then you undress, it always is the same
The sunrise and the sunsets, you're lying while you confess, keep trying to explain
The sunrise and the sunsets, you realise then you forget what you've been trying to retain

But everybody knows it's all about the things that get stuck inside of your head
Like the songs your roommate sings, a vision of her body as she stretches out on your bed
And she raised her hands in the air, asked you when was the last time you looked in the mirror
Because you've changed
Yeah, you've changed

The sunrise, the sunsets, you're hopeful and then you regret, the circle never breaks
With a sunrise and a sunset, there's a change of heart or address, is there nothing that remains?
For a sunrise or a sunset, you're manic or you're depressed, will you ever feel okay?
For a sunrise or a sunset, your lover is an actress, did you really think she'd stay?

For a sunrise or a sunset, you're either coming or you just left, but you're always on the way
Towards a sunrise or a sunset, a scribble or a sonnet, they are really just the same
To the sunrise or a sunset, the master and his servant have exactly the same fate
It's a sunrise and a sunset, from a cradle to a casket, there is no way to escape
The sunrise and a sunset, hold your sadness like a puppet, keep putting on the play

But everything you do is leading to the point where you just won't know what to do
At that moment you may laugh but there is someone there who will be laughing louder than you
So it's true, the trick is complete, you become everything you said you never would be
You're a fool; you're a fool!

Sunrise, sunset, sunrise, sunset, sunrise and the sunsets
Sunrise, sunset, sunrise, the sunsets, the sunrise, the sunsets
Sunrise, sunset, go home to your apartment, put the cassette in the tape deck and let that fever play
Sunrise, sunset, where are you Arienette?
Where are you Arienette?

General Comment:I don't necessarily think this song is about having bipolar. However, it does fit. Someone with bipolar gets into routines where everything is the same, maybe not to other people but to them, they get bored easy when they are not constantly doing something. Its for someone for someone with bipolar to find someone who CAN love them. Its hard to even have long term friendships. Their personalties can be different from morning to night, like the song. They are not OBLIVIOUS to this, but its hard for other people to understand. Its hard to love someone with the disorder. They are more then often the most brilliant people you will meet, but it comes at a price.

Song Meaning:the concept of "sunrise, sunset" is universal: everything starts, and everything ends. I love how Oberst includes motifs throughout this album in each song (ex: "Where are you, Arienette?"). If you haven't already, you should absolutely listen to the (fake) interview of "Conor Oberst" at the end of the song "An Attempt to Tip the Scales", it goes into detail as to what all of the motifs are and what they mean (Fevers, Mirrors, Clocks, Calendars, Time, Scales, Arienette, etc.)

General Comment:Arienette is the love of Conors life. if you listen to the song An Attemp To Tip The Scales...there is an interview in there. it explains everything about Arienette. Conor is a beautiful aritst. all of the metaphors are so amazing! he is great

General Comment:I agree with Bladen Day about the the meaning of the song. What scares me about this song is that I agree with it (at least what I think it means.)

General Comment:Of the many songs Bright Eyes has I can connect mostly to this one, and I think the best part about it is that many people relate to it. But I'm going a step further than that and I'm going to say that this almost completely describes how being bipolar is. I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and this song quite perfectly explains how every day is, not only in the lyrics but in the music. The music goes from routine repetitive to chaotic very quickly and you can hear it coming but there's nothing you can do about it. I love all of these lyrics and could say something about every single one, but I'll stick with "is there nothing that remains" because being bipolar truly makes things constantly change because of the thousands of impulsive/compulsive antics.

My Opinion:this song is 100% brilliant with all of the metephors being used, but even still i think the metaphors are clear enough to know what he is talking about and how deep the feelings are.... its so blunt.. to me anyways it makes me think of someone who is in a deep depression or someone thats dwelling on something or someone that will never happen.. like calling them a fool! and when it says "The sunrise and a sunset, hold your sadness like a puppet, keep putting on the play" to me its talking about someone that is hiding there feelings to everyone and puts on a show in front of everyone... like depression..but ultimately telling you to get up and move on almost like a news flash... because as any ousider they would look at things as if it were all to be pathetic...
