Lyrics for Arienette as interpreted by PLANES

Arienette Lyrics
The fragile keep secrets, gathered in pockets
And they will sell them for nothing
A cheap watch or locket
That kind of gold washes off
The sad at like lepers, they stick to the shadows
And long to ring bells of warning
To tell of their coming
So that the pure can shut their doors
The angry are animals, senseless and savage
They act without order in logical lapses
They stain their mouths with blood
So take my hand, this barren land is alive tonight
The corn has grown stalks that form a wall that hides
The wind carries sounds that I can’t see from beyond that line
Then the stalks begin to sway
Oh stay with me, Arienette, until the wolves are away
The wicked are vultures, they bake in the canyons
They circle in sunlight and wait for their victims
To collapse and call to them
The desperate are water
They will run down forever and soak into silence
To just end up together in some dark and distant place
So don’t leave me here with only mirrors watching me
This house it holds nothing but the memories
And the moon, it bleeds silver, but never sleeps
And then the silver turns to gray
So stay with me, Arienette, until the wolves are away

And then the silver turns to gray so syat with me Arienette until the wolves are away...this song makes me cry. It is so beautiful. I would love to sing this song to someone that used to be a very big part of my life. His use of metaphors and symbolism in this song is amazing, "so don't leave me here with only mirrors watching me." "The wicked are vultures." Anyways, what a beautiful and meaningful song.

You are right. This song has some of the best metaphors and symbolism on the album. I think an important concept in this album is that he is suffering from a fever and has these wicked dreams because of it. For example when he says "The wicked are vultures, they bake in the canyons. They circle in sunlight and wait for their victims to collapse and call to them." The wicked only come out at night when he is sleeping...ie. when he collapses.

I think he's done what he does so many times, with this song: taken two completely unrelated concepts, and woven them together into a song. Look at "A Scale...", it includes basically 4 different themes which, alone, would not stand up as a song, but together are just related enough to make a coherent mood, while each part tells its own unique message. Here, I believe the verses to be critiques of society and those people within it that Conor believes to be useless portions: the angry, the fragile (overly-sensitive), the sad (flagrantly depressed), etc. The chorus, I believe, is about what Sweetygal put: Arienette, whose significance I have yet to puzzle out, except maybe as a protectionist figure, is being called to by Conor, who sees her, an external entity, as being critical to curing his self-loathing (via the mirrors) and his inner demons (the wolves).

Just a psychological note: The first step out of an egocentric stage is reaching out for help, or realizing that there is something with value in your life. Arienette could stand for both of these things. Also, most people in egocentric phases would be described as "depressed," though Conor's seems to go a bit better than a temporary stage of disgusted introspection. As such, I hope that the song is a way for Conor to begin feeling better about his life and situation.

Ah, by better, I meant more serious. Not sure how better came out, I think I was listening to a song at the time. Sorry.

I've always thought that when art is "great" it can be apreciated/understood/enjoyed on many different levels. Bright Eyes is a great band. Every single one of their songs holds meaning and weight. Everyone who listens to them comes away with their own ideas and feelings. On top of that the music is very good. How can you not enjoy these guys?

Take the name of the band. The mood of their songs are anything but bright, but damn aren't the lyrics bright.

another bright eyes song with a name in the title, or in this case, THE title. i think the ones with names are always more romantic. this song reminds me of 'padraic my prince.' it makes me want to cry.

I always thought of Arienette as being his ideal girl, the one true love of his, and he hasn't ever met her. He has given her this name until he finds her. In the mean time, he writes songs calling to her and letting her know he is looking for her, and that she is the only one who can ever reach him and get thru to him.

I agree with bright eyed girl on that. I always compared Arienette to Lucy in a tale of two cities in that she was all the good pure qualities in humans that could never all manifest in one single person. However I really like what Nick Dogg has to say about this song. as far as the words go, I love it. but the music scares the crap out of me.

bright.eyed.girl- You are possibly my soulmate....or we share the same mind. That's exactly what I was thinking, seriously, that EXACT way that you put it.

I wish that I was his Arienette.... :P

NickDogg is my hero. So is Conor Oberst. Wow...just wow. This song is incredible. I don't know Conor can explain his feelings and emotions so elequently and beautifully. I guess that is just what brutal, honest lyrical talent is.

Whee...Arienette was his imaginary friend. If you read the lyrics knowing that it makes a lot of sense. Hehe. The idea that he's her ideal girl works still, though, cuz one's imagination always creates what one wants the most, but doesn't have [yet].
I love this song.

I guess Arienette is his anima.
Is the line about silver/grey about how we look at something and we find it worthy and beautiful, but then when the "novelty" wears out,is looks boring and meaningless even if it's almost the same (silver, grey,,two similar shades but one is shiny and the other is not).

I remember the long-curly-haired kid with the black glasses and striped shirt and baggy pants holding a beer standing next to me. Singing this song. Amazing.

you guys probably all had that same theory about arienette being the girl he's looking for because of his comment about her in the 'interview' on the cd. He says she's just as real as you and me, but he hasn't met her yet. He doesn't want to talk about her though, in case she's listening. hehe, i love conor.

"The angry are
animals senseless and savage. They act without order in logical lapses, they stain their mouths
with blood" i think that line is really cool because if all you Bright Eyes fans dont know already Conor is a vegan (hardcore vegetarian)

he helps out alot in the fight for animal liberation thats what inspired him to write that line, and i think the reason why hes sucha beaut is because unlike you meat eating murderers his mind is free and is able to process these ideas that are so great that he just spits into music.

well if all u guys are SOOOOOOO in love with Conor, and love his ideas and thoughts and would love to understand him a bit better, adopt his ideas on keeping meat off your plates.

try it for a week, and see how much brighter you feel, more inspired, more artistic ,u just feel all around better.

Animals are people too, many compationate people like Conor and kids like me voice the voulnerable animals feelings, join the fight. fight for animal rights.

if Conor does it, u can to too!!

I think the lyrics are wrong in the beginning, it's not "sad at like lepers", it's "stared at like lepers". And for some reason I think the "the moon leaves silver" is "the moon bleeds silver". I could be wrong about that one though.

I love Bright Eyes, but I have to admit they were one of the more disappointing bands to see live. One of my friends warned me that the show is just Conor acting more drunk than he is, and I definitly saw what he meant. I dunno, I'll probably get blasted for saying that but tell me if you agree anybody.

the lyric is "the sad act like lepers". stared at like lepers clearly makes no sense.
and the interview at the end of the song was a joke.
