You follow the footsteps
echoes leading down a hall to a room
There is music playing
tiny bells with moving parts

Here the shadows make things ugly
An effect quite undesirable
The bold and yellow daylight grows
Like ivy across the wall
And bounces off of the painted porcelain
Tiny dancing doll
Her body spins as she pirouettes again
The world suddenly seems small

On an off white subtle morning
You stretch your legs in the front seat
The road has made a vacuum where our voices used to be
And you lay your head onto my shoulder
Pour like water over me
So if I just exist for the next ten minutes of this drive
That would be fine
And all the trees that line this curb
Would be rejoicing and alive

Soon all the joy that pours from everything
Makes fountains of your eyes
Because you finally understand the movement of a hand
Waving you goodbye

General Comment:Sure this song could mean all of those nice things but let's not forget that Connor was a young teenage fella who experimented with drugs...that's part of what drew me to him...the misery of self medicating. He captures it so well in songs and a lot of things in his lyrics are easily missed by people who never experimented with drugs or were depressed.

With that said, this song sounds a lot like a drug trip.... hallucinogenics specifically....The WAVE OF A HAND...everyone on mushrooms or acid has sat for many minutes waving their hand and watching the trails.

Now, I am not saying that the lyrics have no meaning...in fact quite the opposite. The imagery in this screams "i am young, on drugs and realising things about the world, myself, etc. that I otherwise never would".

The constant reference to being happy in the moment and not thinking about the past or future. The head dripping off his shoulder. EVen the first part "You follow the footsteps
echoes leading down a hall to a room"

Anyone who has ever walked down a dark hall to a lit up and noisy room while trippin out would see this

Anyway, maybe he wrote this totally sober but I see definite references to a halluco drug trip.

Song Meaning:It's about a girl who was broken up with, looking back on the memories of her relationship, and finally accepting the reality.

"Soon all the joy that pours from everything
    Makes fountains of your eyes
Because you finally understand the movement of a hand
    Waving you goodbye "

if you really read into it, thats what it seems to be about

General Comment:hm. i know this isn't really what the song means, but to me it reminds me of my exact feelings as i was walking to school with a friend that i knew i wasn't going to see soon after, if ever. how i payed attention to every detail and was just putting off the moment we had to part.
"So if I just exist for the next ten minutes of this drive
    That would be fine"
it was such a prolonged walk and in the end we both knew that there were like 5 minutes of being together left, but it felt like those were the longest and most important moments of my life.

"Soon all the joy that pours from everything
    Makes fountains of your eyes
Because you finally understand the movement of a hand
    Waving you goodbye "
after he had gone, it still hadn't hit me that he actually left until i saw him turn around and wave again before disappearing from sight. it was kind of like closure.

this comment is probably pretty lame and not worded well, but i wanted to share. haha

the way his voice drips with emotion grabs me here. i was absentmindedly listening to my ipod and that line came on and i was pulled into the song.

conor really is a musical genius.

General Comment:I love when he says "pirouettes again," I don't know why, it's my favorite part of the entire song. It gives me chills when he says it.

To me this song is about innocence. This part puts me on the verge of tears. It seems this couple is so incredibly happy, but the narrator knows it must end, however much he doesn't want it to. When he says goodbye, all the happiness they have shared is turned to tears, and she, innocent and confused is ripped from her fantasy as he leaves her. She is feeling the pain of parting for the first time and doesn't understand why.

that part is like the part in 'we are no where and it's now'
when he says "and like a ten minute dream in the passengers seat, while the world was flying by"

get it, like the person will be sleeping for ten minutes, so he'll just have to exist. haaa.

    crazy.

i love bright eyes more than any other band in the universe. incredible, conor oberst, is fucking incredible at music.
