Contrast and compare
Between the busy ones
And the ones that don’t care
Until there is no one
That you really know
So I drift through these days
Of appointments and promises made
They will all end up broken
And quickly replaced
Weeks are slow, days drag on
Even practice and parties seem long
But I found myself going
I guess there’s nothing to do
Oh well
Group of kids, line of cars
More will show up after the bars close
There’s this boredom that drowns everything
Bottles break, music plays
Conversations competing for space
I look for a corner or a quieter room
There’s no heat in this house
I can’t breath with these words in my mouth
But I’m not going to say them
Yeah, I’ve made that mistake before
On the stairs, she grabs my arm
Says, "Whats up, where you been
Is something wrong?"
I try to just smile
And say, "Everything’s fine"
Between the busy ones
And the ones that don’t care
Until there is no one
That you really know
So I drift through these days
Of appointments and promises made
They will all end up broken
And quickly replaced
Weeks are slow, days drag on
Even practice and parties seem long
But I found myself going
I guess there’s nothing to do
Oh well
Group of kids, line of cars
More will show up after the bars close
There’s this boredom that drowns everything
Bottles break, music plays
Conversations competing for space
I look for a corner or a quieter room
There’s no heat in this house
I can’t breath with these words in my mouth
But I’m not going to say them
Yeah, I’ve made that mistake before
On the stairs, she grabs my arm
Says, "Whats up, where you been
Is something wrong?"
I try to just smile
And say, "Everything’s fine"

This is one of the songs on Letting Off The Happiness that didn't catch my attention until I really listened to it. I love when that happens. Brand New always does that to me too.
"Contrast and compare

some people are too busy with themselves to notice the singer's pain, others simply don't care. he wants to see who cares but feels as though there's no one because no one's asking. his lover asks him at the end, but he can't tell her. so he fakes a smile and goes back to the day by day melancholy motions.
Has anyone else noticed that was included into the noise at the end of Untitled (Lovers Turn Into Monsters)
Or...
That the remix version, that Her Space Holiday did, incorporated the weird synth noise in A Poetic Retelling Of An Unfortunate Seduction into it?
Just a thought, maybe these three songs are connected, maybe even along with It's Cool, We Can Still Be Friends
"We still rent movies, but we don't share the couch"
- It's Cool...
"And there's a thousand movies rented for a thousand nights with her"
- Untitled...
Maybe this song is where he's given up on trying to get the girl back, trying to cure his boredom and dissatisfaction with life, and with anything really, and just pretend that "everything's fine". It also puts a new perspective on songs like Take It Easy (Love Nothing) and Lover I Don't Have to Love and all of the alcohol references in his songs.
"I get my whiskey from a well, except on holidays then it's on the top shelf"
"I’ve got a flask inside my pocket we can share it on the train
If you promise to stay conscious I will try and do the same"
"Now I'm drunk as hell on a piano bench"
and i'm sure everyone can find a million more alcohol references, including "She sits and stares into her mixed drink
Telling everyone she's right, well, she's right" which is from the Park Ave. song My Sick Complainant
in addition to all that, 7 years ago when Conor first came to South Carolina he got beat up and mugged and then got completely shit-faced and called everyone dirty rednecks on stage. luckily, recently (and i have no idea why)he decided to come back. and i got to go see bright eyes! :) anyways...
noone's answered the question about what other songs neely jenkins sings with him on.
and the answer is...
pully my hair as well as both versions of happy birthday to me (Feb. 15)
and Tilly and the Wall and Park Ave. are both fantastic bands!
he puts the things i feel into better words than i ever could.
But I’m not going to say them
Yeah, I’ve made that mistake before"
those lyrics are so sad.
but its my favorite part.
