Lyrics for Contrast and Compare as interpreted by PLANES

Contrast and Compare Lyrics
Contrast and compare
Between the busy ones
And the ones that don’t care
Until there is no one
That you really know
So I drift through these days
Of appointments and promises made
They will all end up broken
And quickly replaced

Weeks are slow, days drag on
Even practice and parties seem long
But I found myself going
I guess there’s nothing to do
Oh well
Group of kids, line of cars
More will show up after the bars close
There’s this boredom that drowns everything
Bottles break, music plays
Conversations competing for space
I look for a corner or a quieter room

There’s no heat in this house
I can’t breath with these words in my mouth
But I’m not going to say them
Yeah, I’ve made that mistake before
On the stairs, she grabs my arm
Says, "Whats up, where you been
Is something wrong?"
I try to just smile
And say, "Everything’s fine"

the guy just tells you about all that isn't right, like how he's jsut going through the motions.

and then he says 'Everything's fine.'

wow. amazing. the last two lines are so simple yet say so much. and the scream at the end fits perfectly. it's like he's letting out how he really feels and what he wants to say..

This song is just one of those songs you lazily sit to and just reflect. It's such a beautiful song. Especially the female voice over his. Really mellow and slow....

i think the voice is neely jenkins ... ? it's really pretty, definitely. i believe there are a few other songs on the album that have her singing also.

and yeah, conor is heavy into coke and alcohol. well, actually, i heard he got out of coke for a while but now theres suspiscion about whether he's back in it again. he's a major drunk though, lol, he's always drinking at his shows. thats why he shakes and stuff. it's unhealthy, and i don't advocate it, but it adds to his appeal i think. though, maybe thats just me.

Neely Jenkins is not the lead singer in rilo kiley, that would be Jenny Lewis. Neely is one of the singers in tilly and the wall.

When I saw Bright Eyes live, I was hoping they would perform this song, but they didn't..

My dream is to sing it with him as the girl in the song. ...I can dream.

This song definitely wouldn't be the same without Ms. Jenkins's vocals. The lyrics...and no one... seem to mention the intro to this song. The "No it's 7, so that means it's 5 hours before 1998" in the CD Jacket, it talks about how this albums, a lot of it, was recorded on New Years Eve...
I don't know about anyone else, but this scene that is set up in this song definitely reminds me of a New Years Eve party. With the motions and the lack of hope for the next year... maybe that's just me...because I can relate to that, alot.
"Even practice and parties seem long, but I find myself going, I guess there is nothing to do."
His life is a rut but there's nothing better to do. Everyone can relate....

This is a very good song. The original version is wonderful, but I actually prefer the "Making Words Work mix" that was done by Her Space Holiday on a Bright Eyes/Her Space Holiday Split cd.

Everyone should check it out.
