I cant believe that no one has said anything about this song yet. These lyrics are unbelievable. It's about a boy who has a girl head over heals for him but knows that he could never feel the same way about here. Ugh... I know a guy who could sing this song for me. Evil...

i first heard this song when i was actually in this same situation. although im tired of people stating the obvious about bright eyes songs, yes it made me cry. a lot. and i felt exactly what conor was saying, and that's why i love bright eyes. and if i'd had the balls i would have sung this song to the boy who looked at me with a love so complete.

to me this song means that
he has a girl who likes him and wants to love him but he is feeling so inadequate about who he is and that he couldn't ever fulfill her wishes or expectations.
He feels guilty because he has not found happiness or friendship and has not lived like she lives or like what she expects that he has lived. He is not good enough (and he'll never be) for her and he knows it, and he wanted to change to become good enough or become that person (he thinks) she has in mind.

It's killing him and I relate because I am currently going through what he is describing and it's killing me.

To me, this song is showing that Connor, or whomever he's singing about, has a girl completely infatuated with him. He really cares about her, but he has so much confusion and doubt in his life and about this girl that he can't give her his truest love. And he wants nothing more than to do that.

i agree with what a few others have said...the girl loves him, & he loves her back but doesn't want to be with her, for her sake, because he thinks he's not good enough & couldn't possibly fufill her expectations & meet her needs.

the way he sings "but oh, i wanted to change" sends shivers up my spine.

I do agree with everyone's idea and meaning of this song.. Conor has a way with words, the most touching of songs to me is this one..

In my opinion, Conor is trying to get the visual of a guy dating this girl, he does have feelings for her and does want to be with her.. the girl loves him and does the best she can to make him happy.. and he is almost intimidated by her ability to do so much for him and to care so much for him, he's never experienced a love quite like the love he has with this girl.. and he's scared. He wishes he could return the same love and commitment she has for him.. but he knows he's never going to be good enough, never going to be fully the guy for her.. and because she seems perfect to him in every way, he doesn't feel as if he'll ever match up to her expectations, so he simply gives up. and yet he feels guilty at the same time because he does have those feelings.. but sometimes feelings aren't enough to satisfy another's needs.

i guess to me it is like he knows they are meant for eachother, but he can't make it complete by being hers, since he doesn't feel like he can be what he knows she wants. he knows it would be incredible if he only changed to be satisfying for her, but he can't help himself do it, even though it's possible. but i don't really know.

i'm going through the same thing he's talking about-i loved this man, i put everythng into it and he didn't love me back.
however, he was a jackass about it and didn't ever sing me anything or express any sentiments at all vaguely resembling the ones in this song. this song would make me cry if i wasn't so emotionally numb, it's so true. it's the worst feeling in the world when you invest all of yourself in a person and then find out they don't love you back.
