My grandfather's name was Moon
Because his eyes were bright and round
And no amount of time or liquor could dull them
My grandmother's name was Joy
Because it spilled out of her heart
And bathed her precious children in its warmth
And there was happiness in life beyond the sorrow
and the pain
But how they ever found it, I cannot explain
I guess time has a way of making everything all right
It's just, there is not enough of it
And so we drink and we sing and we celebrate
This lie and hope that it will last
Morning is here, night has passed
My grandfather was a doctor
He cured the sick with his kind hands
And he taught me how to sail and how to find dry land
My grandmother was all sweetness
And when she spoke we all heard bells
And they rang in such a way that we were comforted
And they held on to each other with all the strength they had
And they loved with devotion beyond what I understand
But I guess fear has a way of making sleep unbearable
And the days seem cold and long
But we cry and we dance and we stumble into love with awkward, perfect grace
The moon is gone and the sun has took it's place

Memory:His description of his grandfather makes me think of my own grandfather who passed away this year. Such a beautiful song, i can also really relate to the stumble awkwardly into love line.

General Comment:this song reminds me of my own grandparents , especially how he says "And no amount of time or liquor could dull them". My grandparents drink whiskey from about 4 in the afternoon until they go to bed at about 11 haha

General Comment:He is celebrating the joy and brightness that were carried into his life through his grandparents,
but felt that that same sparkle was dulled down when they passed away.
It's just his way of making a memorial of them, sharing the fondness that they created in his life.
Maybe they helped raise him in a sense and he feels lost and unhappy,
unable to feel that same joy without them.

General Comment:A song has never made me cry before but I was tearing up for this one. There's just so much admiration and so, so much love in this song. It's beautiful. It leaves a glow in the center of you, it makes it hard to breathe.

General Comment:Conor Oberst did a fantastic job of using word play here. The first like, "My grandfather's name was Moon" and the last line, "The moon is gone and the sun has took it's place " show how after his grandfather died, his father took the ropes. I hope Conor becomes the moon.
