Lyrics for Crawl Away as interpreted by neffe

Crawl Away Lyrics
You crawled away from me
Slipped away from me
I tried to keep a hold
But there was nothing I could say
You slid away from me
Crept away from me
Tired to keep you down
But there was nothing I could say

What you're trying to say is you don't wanna play
But what you want and what you need don't mean that much to me
I can see your back is turning
If I could I'd stick the knife in

Crawled away from me
Slipped away from me
Tired to keep a hold
But there was nothing I could say
Slid away from me
Crept away from me
Tired to keep you down
but there was nothing I could say

So what you're trying to say is you don't want to play
But what you want and what you need don't mean that much to me
I can see your back is turning
If I could I'd stick the knife in

This is love
This is my love for you

Say you won't go
(get up... say you won't... stand up...)

What you're trying to say is you don't want to play
But what you want and what you need don't mean (that) fuck to me
I can see your back is turning
If I could I'd stick the knife in

I don't have much to comment on, but when I hear the line "this is my love" I always imagine that is the point at which the singer is sticking said knife into back.

I think this song is about how he's pissed off because she turned her back on him, even when he tried to keep her and he's going to pay her back for what she did.

i believe its about a person (person no. 1) who likes another person (person no. 2) more than they like them back. person no.2 doesnt want to be in the relationship anymore, but to person no.1 it feels as if no.2 is turning their back on no.1 coz no.2 doesnt feel for no.1 as no.1 does for no.2. no.1 is angry and feels that they want to hurt no.2 , but only for a moment, as no.1 knows that they love no.2 really... i always make things harder!

i think that this song is about someone who is trying to evade the other. not knowing the extent of the other persons feelings. and after confrontation that other person only wanted to get away faster, now that they know the truth. with their back turned(facing someone else?) he feels the power of rejection. and this is my love for you. this knife in your back because you crawled away.

this sounds like Maynard is stalking somebody......I bet it is Steven Tyler from Aerosmith! LOL I am kidding....not really sure what this song is about, but it's one of the easier Tool songs to cover. I've heard 4 different local bands playing it before. I actually sang for one of them.

does anyone know what's up with the music in the first twenty seconds of this song? if you turn it up really loud, it sounds like carnival music...

Yeah, it does, dosn't it?

I can really relate to this song, to me it's about rejection from the opposite sex, and the confusion and anger this can cause. Right now I'm sick of fucking women general, no offence.

Just so you know the music at the begining of this song is some sort of tribal beat.

I took the song to be about a sort of abusive relationship in which the agressor is trying desperatly to hold on to thier abused lover who has decided they have had enough... and they crawl away. The fact that the word "crawl" is used instead of "walk" or something sudjests that the abused is still wounded by the whole ordeal... Then again, it sounds a bit sneaky ("you slid and crept away). Also, I know this could not have been the original inspiration for the song, but this song, word for word, describes a manga (that's Japenese comic book) called Deep Flower. It's creepy... ><;

Well, this song reminds me of the people's constant runaway from others. Maybe it's not about a girl - Maynard only points out at the weak characters, like the people turning their back to other people, wether it's a girlfriend, wife, friend, etc. These sneaky attempts are far too... evil... and embarrasing... and the ones caught while trying to slip away and covering loyalty with mud... it causes anger and frustration, and people will often kill for that.

about the first 20 seconds of the song... this music is called "Sikuri", it´s original from Peru and Bolivia in the andes... it´s played in several celebrations in this places with "zampońas", "bombo" (kinnda bass drum) and "quenas" (like Flute). Now you know and can find more in google if u want...

This is a song about someone leaving, true. However, Maynard is not talking about getting revenge. He is only thinking about revenge. He loves this person so much that he refuses to act on his impulses. It is more of a fantasy than a real thing. The song kicks ass.

So if anyone ever sees this, this song is about wanting someone so badly you will force them to stay in a relationship even if it is detrimental to them. You put your wan't for them above them. Selfish, thats all.

I agree with devotional. For me it's about selfish love that desperately desires control. Very common in uncommunicative males.. :P It reminds me of a murder in my city, where a guy strangled his girlfriend because she wanted to leave him. Such a miserable asshole.

I agree with dubtiger. The song is from the perspective of the abusive person within the relationship who cannot let go as his partner fades away from him...the knife references points towards the narrator becomes increasingly desperate and violent in order to save the relationship.

Yeah this song can definitely be interpreted as feelings in the repressed rage stage of a splitting relationship where someone gets left and gets bitter. But it is also really interesting to look at it from an internal standpoint as they might be angry at this one person now, but they know the real problem is getting over it and having to hear and deal with these dark thoughts inside them self when this happens in their relationships with others as a result of feeling isolated, misunderstood, rejected, call it what you want. The narrator could be talking to a part of them self that keeps escaping them self. The narrator shows disrespect to this part of them self "what you want and what you need doesn't mean that much to me" that they view as naďve or "innocent" of them self and lacks deep feeling but the narrator wants it back and tried to make in stay but could not regain the part of them self they view as innocent. The narrator would stick a knife in it, destroy, kill it but it's just a part of them self, it’s intangible. Also check out Swamp Song because it is kind of the answer to this song with the lines “My warning meant nothing. You're dancing in quicksand” and “No one told you to come” the words “my warning” also come out a little bit as “what I wanted” when listening to the song which would really relate to Crawl Away.

I think this song is about a girl that is constantly trying to sneak out of Maynard’s life without him noticing. However, he’s completely obsessed with the girl and isn’t about to let her go, regardless of what she wants.

“But what you want and what you need
doesn't mean that much to me.”

Then she finally decides that she’s going to get the hell out of there and Maynard is not too happy. He can’t stand the thought that she wouldn’t return his love and feels betrayed because he opened up to her only to get nothing in return. He wants revenge.

“Because I can see your back is turning.
If I could I'd stick the knife in.”

And then, after he takes his revenge, he’s going to offer her an ultimatum. It’s him or no one and he’ll make damn sure of that. Love him or that knife just might find to that unloving little heart of hers.

“Get up.
Now.
Say you won't go.”

Fuck, I’d love him.

Crawl Away is my favorite Tool song. I feel it lacks lyrics, but the lyrics are so strong, it doesn't matter. I can relate to this song with my entire life. If you don't know what this song is about, it obviously never happened to you.

Oh, and by the way - whoever wrote the lyrics at the top of the page should be shot, stabbed, and then sodomized for being such a fucking moron. What happened to the most important part of the song when he says "Get you in a strangle-hold baby... Get it 'till you get it right"? "What you try to say" is you don't know how to use your ears in conjunction with a keyboard.

It is a pretty good Tool song. It's one of those songs I listen to when I'm angry and it helps me calm down a little. Anger + Anger = Calm? It makes no sense, I know, but that's how it works with me.
