There's something about the look in your eyes
Something I noticed when the light was just right
It reminded me twice that I was alive
And it reminded me that you're so worth the fight

My biggest fear will be the rescue of me
Strange how it turns out that way, yeah
Could you show me dear?
Something I'm not seeing
Something infinitely interesting
Could you show me dear?
Something I'm not seeing
Something infinitely interesting

there's something about the way you move
I see your mouth in slow motion when you sing
Like suddenly something someone contrives
Your movements echo that I have seen the real thing

Your biggest fear will be the rescue of you
Strange how it turns out that way, yeah
Could you show me dear?
Something I'm not seeing
Something infinitely interesting
Could you show me dear?
Something I'm not seeing
Something infinitely interesting

Song Meaning:"your movements echo that i have seen the real thing"

that is the crux of the song, the big question, if you will. he has seen and felt glimpses of true love for this girl, but he can't tell if it was "the real thing."

    supporting evidence:

"...something I noticed when the light was just right...it reminded me you're so worth the fight"

remember, brandon and the boys are hopeless romantics/nerds from calabasas. they expected love to be easy to recognize, like in the movies and fairytales: but it isn't. you sometimes have to "fight" through the tough times in a relationship for that glimmer of true love. that is why he asks the girl to "show me something I've not seen, something infinitely interesting."

his "biggest fear is the rescue," a.k.a. the rescue from his loneliness. he fears saying taking the relationship/commitment any further because he isn't sure if it is meant to be. but he is considering it heavily, enough to write a song about it.

I think he found true love when writing this album: sounds like it to me. but i think he let fear get the best of him and denied his "rescue." You can tell by the change of tone in their next album, and because he is nearly 40 years old, unmarried, and still writing songs like "adolescents" and "promises, promises."

General Comment:Does anyone know if the second verse lyrics are correct? I hear it is "more subtle than something someone contrives" rather thank "like suddenly"...

General Comment:One of the best songs on the album. The only mistake I see in the lyrics is in the second verse. It's "more subtle than something someone contrives," not "like suddenly something someone contrives." Contrive means to plan with great cleverness and ingenuity, so something more subtle than that would be pretty dang near non-existent; metaphorically speaking, this person is so perfect it's almost unreal.

Song Meaning:For me I interpret this song to my own situation.. which I think the lyrics allow you to do that without a hard and fast meaning..

Something about the look in your eyes... my fiance has a fascination with pretty eyes and I think you can see raw emotion in peoples eyes that is hard to hide

the next parts of the lyrics about being reminded that you are alive and the rescue being the biggest fear.. when we first got together we were both messes for different reasons, and at the very bottom of our existences.. gradually as we stuck it out together we had the opportunity to start to discover ourselves and how our lives should be..

show me something ive not seen, something infinitely interesting.. as two people grow and mature in love together you enjoy the laughter, tears, and intimate moments along the way of a path that you could not have otherwise envisaged yourself..

this song just speaks so much about being deeply in love and learning and growing along the way to me, we are getting married in 11 days and I am going to use this in our video. I love how its not a typical pop song its deeper and can be interpreted in your own way :)

General Comment:The line 'More subtle than something someone contrives'... to me, reminds me of once when my dad was saying about a model in a magazine and how the picture couldn't have been airbrushed because of the subtle lines, etc.

So in the song I think it means that the way she moves is more subtly perfect than anything that anyone could imagine themselves.

General Comment:I agree this is a song about someone he loves but I guess I have a slightly different take on "My biggest fear will be the rescue of me"-

After a few failed relationships you can be in a low place, and afraid of opening up and being vulnerable again. But then someone new comes along and sort of rescues you out of that dark place (and reminds you twice that you're alive). He follows with the line with "strange how it turn out that way" pointing out the irony of being afraid of something good, like love. And "Could you show me dear...something I've not seen" is him saying he's been with other people but no one like this one.

General Comment:First, let me point out that I play this song in my car after I drop off the girl I like at her house. In regards to the "...rescue or me..." and "...rescue of you..." parts, I believe that these simply mean that he fears if he ever will fall in love, hence rescue. It's not really fear, it's just being worried if you can be that lucky to be in love.

My Interpretation:This means basically he wants to be convinced that this "thing" he has with the girl is real and wants something to show that it is. He's been hurt before and doesn't want to get those feelings again of being in love and then being hurt in the process.

This is all the guys perspective as the lyrics implies nothing of the girls feelings towards him. But one thing is for sure is that her biggest fear is being rescued. Apparently she doesn't want to be rescued, rather let it all unfold the way it should be, like how nature takes its course.

My Interpretation:I love the "biggest fear" lines... My biggest fear will be the rescue of me... Your biggest fear will be the rescue. Brandon has always had a way of making you ponder of what he was thinking when he wrote any of his songs. I think his goal is for everyone to interpret it in their own way. When I listen to 'echo' I have to admit I'm completely entranced by his play on words, I'm infinitely pondering what the meaning to him was. Honestly, I wish I could truly relate to this lovey dovey part, but when he says "my biggest fear will be the rescue of me." it hits me hard. Previously, my biggest fear in life was public speaking, I mean, every time I had to speak to a crowd of people and they were all looking at me, all of their attentions were directly on me, it made wanna die. I seriously wanted to piss my pants, through up, and have a heart attack all the once. Anyways, I have epilepsy, and one time I went to local epilepsy foundation meeting for everyone who has epilepsy or lives with someone with epilepsy. They said "if anyone would like to come up and share their experience with everyone, raise your hand and we'll give you a chance to speak." Suddenly that line popped in my head and I raised my hand and they called me up, I went up there and I was dying, but I did it anyways. First I told everyone how difficult it was for me to talk on stage, not talking about my experience, but just talking in front of a crowd of people. I could tell they all understood so I went I told them everything about my experiences with epilepsy and how I conquered my life being able to live with it, then I said "I think that that's the point of conquering something your afraid of, kind of like what I'm doing right now, I'm conquering my biggest fear of speaking in public, I just want to show everyone that it's hard to do, but it's definitely possible." All the sudden someone started clapping and then everyone started clapping... and suddenly I felt okay. I wasn't afraid anymore. I moved a lot of ppl that day and all a while of moving myself. My biggest fear was the rescue of me. I'm no longer afraid to speak in public, I actually kind of enjoy it. Anyways, the fact that this line is in this song alone makes it one of my favorites by Incubus. Thank you brandon, to all the true fans: you're lyrics live within us all.
