I gave up on you a long time ago
How can you blame me?
We made plans to meet and you never showed
You kept me waiting
They said everything would work out just fine
They said you'd help me
But as it turns out it was all a lie
And they're off someplace far away laughing at me

You've been there for me one time in my life
But it didn't matter
You came and went so fast all my hope
And faith in you shattered
And now here I sit alone in this room
No one to confide in
You watched all my dreams come apart at the seams
You laughed, you left, you waited in hiding

Bless me dark father I have sinned
I've done it before and I'll do it again
'Cause it keeps me warm, and makes you smile
Been beneath me all the while
Hell yes

You gave up on me along time ago
I can't say I blame you
I rejected the faith in your holy rays
Is what it comes down to
They said everything would work out just fine
I just went crazy
But I'm better now having a good time
Being selfish, and drunken, and vulgar, and lazy

Bless me dark father I have sinned
I've done it before and I'll do it again
'cause it keeps me warm, and makes you smile
Been beneath me all the while

Bless me dark father I can't win
Without you I'm as good as dead
'Cause you keep me warm, you make me smile
You've been on my shoulder all the while

Whispering sweet nothings
Whispering sweet nothings
Whispering sweet nothings
You've been whispering sweet nothings

General Comment:In an article with Spin Magazine: This song is about losing faith in God and turning to Satan instead.

General Comment:The song is clearly about a shitty relationship and addiction.

Bless me dark father I have sinned
Ive done it before and Ill do it again
Cuz it keeps me warm, and makes you smile
Been beneath me all the while

Explains it all right there. Sinning by indulging. When you get drunk, high or whatever, it keeps you warm numbs the pain and makes you smile.

Trying to get that demon off his shoulders.

General Comment:People who think that LaVeyan Satanism is literal devil worship need to do some research. For all intents and purposes they are Atheists. They don't sacrifice animals either.

"Satanists do not believe in the supernatural, in neither God nor the Devil. To the Satanist, he is his own God. Satan is a symbol of Man living as his prideful, carnal nature dictates. The reality behind Satan is simply the dark evolutionary force of entropy that permeates all of nature and provides the drive for survival and propagation inherent in all living things. Satan is not a conscious entity to be worshipped, rather a reservoir of power inside each human to be tapped at will. Thus any concept of sacrifice is rejected as a Christian aberration—in Satanism there’s no deity to which one can sacrifice."

General Comment:They're satanists. It's not about sarcasm or a relationship.

General Comment:this is easy. sure, it is about someone letting you down, but Skiba is talking about being let down by god and going over to the dark side. do some research, Matt Skiba has proclaimed belonging to the church or satan for a long time. come on kids "bless me dark father, i have sinned..." easy.

General Comment:I am currently atheist, but i am researching into other religions, in possibility that i may become spiritual.

I love this song, because one of the religions i am interested in is Satanism, and this song talks about how the drk lord Satan is always there for you, even when God (I think it's reffering to the god of Christianity) has turned his back on you.

General Comment:i haven't been through all these comments so hope i'm not repeating. to me, this song is simply about drinking and how satan never let him down. obviously there are references to a relationship gone wrong, and what does he do? he drinks! and he enjoys it!
"bless me dark father (satan) for i have sinned. i've done it before and i'll do it again. it keeps me warm and makes me smile (alcohol makes you feel warm and makes you have a good time generally by taking your mind off all that other shit that's been happening"

and the last line "been beneath me all the while" or "you been on my shoulder all the while" refers to the devil being beneath him in hell or alternatively on his shoulder whispering sweet nothings in his ear, and helping him through the shit times in his life.

General Comment:I think hes talking to satan because its just saying how its easier to do bad things and be negative then to thank God for somehting u dont have or something on the lines of that, o and Matt and Dan are members of the church of satan

General Comment:this song is about matt putting his faith in a religious after his father was killed in a car accident, and ending up rejecting religion, finding comfort in being for lack of a better word a hedonist.
