Lyrics for I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking F... as interpreted by DonutDH

I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking F... Lyrics
I have climbed the highest mountains
I have run through the fields
Only to be with you
Only to be with you

I have run I have crawled
I have scaled these city walls
Only to be with you
But I still haven't found
What I'm looking for
But I still haven't found
What I'm looking for

I have kissed honey lips
Felt the healing in her fingertips
It burned like fire
This burning desire
I have spoke with the tongue of angels
I have held the hand of a devil
It was warm in the night
I was cold as a stone
But I still haven't found
What I'm looking for
But I still haven't found
What I'm looking for

I believe in the Kingdom Come
Then all the colours will bleed into one
But yes I'm still running
You broke the obnds
You loosed the chains
You carried the cross
And my shame
And my shame
You know I believe it
But I still haven't found
What I'm looking for
But I still haven't found
What I'm looking for

I think its about a person's struggle to believe in God when concrete proof is lacking. It really is a beautiful song about love and pure faith.

True.
This is one of U2's most overtly religious songs.

I think Bono is relating when he says "I have kissed honey lips Felt the healing in her fingertips It burned like fire This burning desire.....It was warm in the night
I was cold as a stone" he is relating to Judes because when Judes betrayed Jesus he kissed him, then feeling so bad that night killed himself, that hint is from cold as a stone....and the devils hand is because he betrayed Jesus. Also in the song when he repeats "But i still haven't found what i'm looking for" he is speaking about the people who are trying to find proof of Jesus, and almost find Jesus himself, but Jesus is everywhere, he is the living God....and this song is also about pure faith just like WildHoney said....faith w/ out proof, thats true fatih

This song's about a woman he loved so much but he never made it complete.

I think it means that he is searching to be complete, in the woman he loves, he tries, but there is an inner struggle. He loves her completely and infinitely, but there is no completeness in his heart.

He's lived, experienced God and the supernatural, but he's still not as close to God as he wants to be. The band have described this song as a religious/gospel song. I used to think of it as a rejection of Christianity ("I still haven't found what I'm looking for") but on closer reading it seems more like a request to go deeper.

"I have kissed honey lips
Felt the healing in her fingertips
It burned like fire
This burning desire"
This is lust and sexual desire

"I have spoken with the tongue of angels"
If Bono means this literally he's talking about speaking in tongues, when the Holy Spirit comes on someone and they speak a strange language they don't themselves understand, and often it is an angelic tongue

"I have held the hand of a devil"
He, like all of us, have given into temptation or desire or doubt at one point or another...he's a sinner

Pretty interesting song...bit of a classic...

In my humble opinion this is the second best song on the Joshua Tree after With or without you. I think the line "but yes I'm still running" means that although he hasn't found what he's looking for (proof of jesus/god?) to this point, he's just as determined to find it despite no success thus far.

This is about going deeper in his relationship with Christ Jesus.

You can't really explain to anyone who hasn't experienced the amazing power of God's holy spirit but Bono does well here: This burning desire that burns like a fire!

That is the desire to know God and to go deeper in relationship with him and to experience all the good gifts he has to offer!

It sounds crazy, I know. I was one of those who "held the hand of the Devil" myself. I rejected religion and in particular, Christianity, because it sounded so crazy, but amazingly, I have now experienced it first hand and I know it is real.

If you really want to understand what this song is all about, you should find a Charismatic (Pentecostal) Church near you.

The song is about looking for something in your life that completes you. Not about a woman or god exclusively! The reference to a woman is that as good as it is to be with a woman that experience still doesn't complete his life. The reference to God "you broke the bonds and loosed the chains, carried the cross and my shame" means that despite all the grounding and support that religion gives him, he still hasn't found what he's looking for. Something very self evident with U2's shifting and evolution in music. They're constantly trying to find a better way of reaching people.

i agree with rednight. i don't really think it's about a specific person or god or anything else, those are just kind of examples.... i think its about how he's made love to the woman he loves, he believes in god, he's traveled the world, he's done great things, but he still feels like he's looking for something. and no matter what he does he still can't find it, and can't be complete without it.

What interests me greatly is this. You would think that a song with this title would be sad, even if you read all the lyrics you could still think that. The music and the way he sings it make it into a song about success. It's all about the journey.

a friend told me he likes to think of it as, on his spiritual journey, he may have chosen Christ (or Christ chose him) but on this earth, in this life, he still hasn't found what he's looking for: Heaven. I think that's pretty cool. re: belteshazzar's blog, you can find more without going to a Charismatic Church, just make sure they base their truth on the Bible.

This song is about a household object that you lose and you spend half the afternoon looking for it on a weekend. He's wasted lots of perfectly good time, but he still hasn't found what he's looking for. Such a shame - I think we can all sympathize.

rednight1972 and oracle_angel's analagy is quite good but after looking at the lyrics again the opinion on Bono looking for "something" in general, can't be right. This is this line that contradicts...

"I have climbed the highest mountains
I have run through the fields
Only to be with you" YOU is a person not SOMETHING so It must be God/Jesus he is talking about.

To me this song exemplifies how music can tell a story as well or better than words can. Even without the words, you could still get the sense that there is a longing. The music fades in at the beginning and out at the end. Also, the chord is incomplete.

The lyrics add even more meaning. Bono talks about how he has experienced so much on earth, and knows God, but still wants to know him more.

I think this song is just Bono reflecting to himself about his penis.

hahaahhaha!

it's the experience of the journey taken that ultimately determines its success. and i do agree that Bono is charting his spiritual and philosophical approach to life, from his new wave/punk days to his pentecostal involvement to finally a less sectarian, more open-minded approach to God, love and various other deeper themes. i think he's approaching an understanding of spiritual themes covered in the Bible and in theology but, like most mere mortals, is unable to grasp (or put into practice) the true significance behind such philosophy - concepts of grace and love, with which he writes alot of songs about.

What a heartfelt lyric -- it shows us the tremendous freedom God gives us to choose and the fact that we can come to Him as we are/have been - His love covers us regardless of our past - Its not about being right or sucessful its about looking. The relationship we long for is worth the search...

Marcpeter says it all. God's love knows no bounds. A relationship like that one is a miracle - one that gives me the freedom & power to choose a path, to discover love, to succeed or to fail, welcoming me home like the prodigal son, while encouraging me to continue searching - is worth everything.

The whole point of a relationship is mutual growth surrounded by love. This is true of a relationship with Jesus. In the song, Bono is describing the joys and pains of his relationship with Jesus; his lyrics keep coming back to love. "I still haven't found what I'm looking for" —suggests that even if you have found the Good Way, doesn't mean you have all the answers; Christians don't have all the answers. But, Bono, along with many other Christians, is longing for the perfect (refined) relationship with Christ which will only happen upon ascension to heaven, when we are joined with Him in all surpassing love. In a way, this is a David-esk love song to God.

I think the people who are saying this is about a woman he is in love with are dead wrong. Bono came from a family of strong religious background (his mother was protestant and his father was catholic). I think this is just a song about finding Jesus. -peace-

i believe the line "I have spoke with the tongue of angels" refers to the Bible passage that says something along the lines of if i speak with the tongue of angels but have not love i am nothing. I agree that this song is about love but is not limited to the love of a woman, though that may be part of it. He knows about Christ's sacrifice on the cross and believes it ("I believe in the Kingdom Come...You carried the cross And my shame You know I believe it") but he has yet to move beyond knowing it in his head and in his heart instead. so yes, it is about love, the love of Christ, and even the love of a woman perhaps. basically his life isnt complete, and he's still searching for that final piece, knowing he has love.
