Lyrics for Lateralus as interpreted by Everlong

Lateralus Lyrics
Black then white are all I see in my infancy
Red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me, let's me see

As below, so above and beyond, I imagine
Drawn beyond the lines of reason
Push the envelope, watch it bend

Over thinking, over analyzing, separate the body from the mind
Withering my intuition, missing opportunities and I must
Feed my will to feel my moment, drawing way outside the lines

Black then white are all I see in my infancy
Red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me, let's me see
There is so much more and beckons me to look through to these infinite possibilities

As below, so above and beyond, I imagine
Drawn outside the lines of reason
Push the envelope, watch it bend

Over thinking, over analyzing, separate the body from the mind
Withering my intuition, leaving opportunities behind

Feed my will to feel this moment
Urging me to cross the line
Reaching out to embrace the random
Reaching out to embrace whatever may come

I embrace my
Desire to
I embrace my
Desire to
Feel the rhythm, to
Feel connected
Enough to step aside and
Weep like a widow, to
Feel inspired, to
Fathom the power, to
Witness the beauty, to
Bathe in the fountain, to
Swing on the spiral, to
Swing on the spiral, to

Swing on the spiral of
Our divinity and
Still be a human

With my feet upon the ground I move myself between the sounds
And open wide to suck it in, I feel it move across my skin
I'm reachin' up and reachin' out, I'm reachin' for the random or
Whatever will bewilder me, whatever will bewilder me
And following our will and wind, we may just go where no one's been
We'll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no one's been

Spiral out
Keep going
Spiral out
Keep going
Spiral out
Keep going
Spiral out!
Keep going

I have bought all of Tool's albums last week and have been listening to them for 6 days straight from Undertow to what I have just heard.
After this song I was left speechless! I find this song extremely ravishing and had just become my favorite Tool song.
I have NEVER heard a band like Tool before(maybe except for the Deftones a little bit)
Maynard James Keenan is a GENIUS!and so is Tool
Can't wait till I hear Opiate and 10,000 days and see what's in-stored for me!

Blck white red and yellow have to do with a navajo mythology. Also, he probably used those colors in order to make it fit the fibonacci sequence.

My interpretation of this song is from a songwriters perspective.

I have suffered from writers-block, overanalyzing everything around me. This song suggests to me an openness rather than a hunt for meaning in songs. Allow the songs to grow themselves without letting your mind close up around it.

This is just from a few select lines though.

It also suggests to me a lot about racial acceptance as a child or young adult, meeting or mixing with new cultures, possibly Maynard talking about his army experiences.

to me, this song is about pushing throught, reaching out past conventional 'reason' to the infinite possibilities that beyond... embrace the random, look at things from a different perspective... sometimes you need to let go of your reason and just let your pure will and instinct guide you

everytime i listen to this i get something new out it... its more than amazing really... right now the realization and enlightenment that is flowing into and pouring out of me brings tears to my eyes...

anythings possible and if we realize that we can rid ourselves of whatever it is thats holding us back and rise up, evolve to a new place... dont let anything hold you back from what you can be... we may just go where no ones been...

i hope this song is as much to everyone else as it is to me, if not more

Spiral out
Keep going...

I read somewhere that this song incorporates the Fibonacci Sequence in it's main riff and lyrics. I think that's awesome.

I think the song is awesome in general.

I think the song is about expanding your mind and yourself. The first two lines, for instance:
'Black then white are all I see in my infancy
Red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me, let's me see'
When people talk about seeing in black and white, they talk about seeing things simply.
Red and yellow are colours, in other words, expanding what you see.

'As below, so above and beyond, I imagine
Drawn beyond the lines of reason
Push the envelope, watch it bend'
I think this refers to seeing the bigger picture. Pushing the boundaries. Seeking outside the square. Back to maths, that's what mathmaticians do. They think outside the square.

'infinite possibilities' maths again.
'drawing way outside the lines'
'over thinking, over analysing, separate the body from the mind' ignoring physical incapabilites; letting your mind wander in order to discover new things

To cut a long ramble short, I think Lateralus is about thinking outside the square, exploring new things, not limiting yourself.

It speak volumes to people and is open to so much interpretation. Every song they make speaks volumes on so many different levels...it really speaks to people and that's the best thing about them.

man...it's such a good song!

It may talk about growing (note the use of 'infancy')

I think this song is about personal growth and developement, understanding other people's views on life, and how you should accept that the world as it is. Letting yourself evolve, Be yourself, be different. it means so much.

This song has many meanings, and most of them are very philosophical.. The origin of the universe, Infant Cognitive Development, and Self-Awareness to name a few

For me it is exactly what the title says, Lateral-Us.... But its about our inability to move forward, and our need to move forward.

I embrace my
Desire to
Feel the rhythm, to
Feel connected
Enough to step aside and
Weep like a widow, to
Feel inspired, to
Fathom the power, to
Witness the beauty, to
Bathe in the fountain, to
Swing on the spiral, to
Swing on the spiral, to

Swing on the spiral of
Our divinity and
Still be a human.

Basically saying that instead of thinking laterally and closed minded, embrace life as it is and be open minded.

i think maynard might be making a reference to his/the interpretations of his galactic signature (mayan astrology). I don't know all too much about it myself, i just got done reading my own description of my galactic signature (which is determined by your date of birth).
But either way, it corresponds to the song; maynard's description consists of Blue Storm, Blue Monkey, White Wind, Red Moon, and Yellow Sun -- each title is a description of an individual's self; who they are, who they will become, and offers advice on how to develop one's self and conscience throughout existence. In this case, these five title's are Maynard's personal interpretations/descriptions/advice/insights/etc in his galactic signature.

Perhaps in the beginning of the song:

"Black then white are all I see in my infancy
Red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me, let's me see"

is the order of how his realization of self occurred, "black" possible being little knowledge of self and conscience, since there is no black title in Maynard's personal description or galactic signature.

so he went from nothing, or lesser knowledge, then came to beleive/know about whatever White Wind's advice was to him, then Red Moon, then Yellow Sun, and so on.

--just an idea as my interpretation of this song really, it's much less complicated then i've made it sound

We 'spiral out' as we continuously build off of past experiences to try and guide our direction into the future.

This song is blatantly mathmatical/spiritual. It's based all around the Fibonacci sequence, and when you rearrange all the song on the album in a Fibonacci order then all the tracks flow from one song into the next seamlessly. Need more proof?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wS7CZIJVxFY

Someone timed the lyrics and all the syllables are spoken in the order of the Fibonacci "spiral", but instead of a true Fibonacci it "swings on the spiral" of the sequence.

I declare this song a math win.

Tool (or Maynard) must be skilled at meditation. It hints at this throughout the song. One in particular is with 'reaching out' to the random. This indicates the practice of clearing the mind of the surroundings. Then, there's the rhythmic chant towards the end before 'spiral out'. It's interesting how the guitar then takes over the chant at the end. This is the release of the mind into the ether. Spiraling Out seems to relate to being something other than human or having the conciousness of the cosmo's. Good song.

this whole song was made in some sort of code by the syllubals, i think its pretty kick ass, but i think the song is about going somewhere youve never gone before, like paradise or some shit, bathe in the fountain, somewhere you go to feel conneceted, inspired, fathom the power, witness the beauty, maybe hes talkin about heaven, who knows none of us will never be on tools level its just to mind bending to comprehend i bet we dont even know half the meanings of their shit but my favorite band of all time

I think there is something we should all realize...."tool" is only the tool creating the music, maybe there is specific detailed messages in each song but i think we have to take into account that we will all have our own interpretations of the lyrics whether consciously or through reading it else where.

This song's going to kick so much ass of Miley Cyrus (aka "Sluthead"). What if I Made the Realms of Hell version of it and this song could be about revenge but I'd rather put it on my favorite celebs:
Penn Badgely
Johnny Knoxville
Brittany Snow
Jesse Metcalfe
Arrielle Kebbel
Ashanti
and of course Sophia Bush.
They rock *mutters* except for miley

Kay , wow you guy, i can`t beileve that no one has figured this out yet . this song is seriosuly the most amazing piece of art ever. It relates to the fibanochi sequence. The sequence for finding spirals.
The sequence is the following ;
1+1=2
1+2=3
2+3=5
3+5=8
5+8=13
etc.

this is the fibanochi sequence in lateralus

Black (1)
then (1)
white are (2)
all I see (3)
in my infancy (5)
Red and yellow then came to be, (8)
reaching out to me, (5)
let's me see (3)

(as you can see, it`s not a perfect spiral because it only goes to 8, then comes back down)

As below, so above and beyond, I imagine (13)
Drawn beyond the lines of reason (8)
Push the envelope, (5)
watch it bend (3)

Over thinking, over analyzing, separate the body from the mind
Withering my intuition, missing opportunities and I must
Feed my will to feel my moment, drawing way outside the lines

Black (1)
then (1)
white are (2)
all I see (3)
in my infancy (5)
Red and yellow then came to be, (8)
reaching out to me, (5)
let's me see (3)

There is (2)
so (1)
much (1)
more and (2)
beckons me (3)
to look through to these (5)
infinite possibilities (8)

As below, so above and beyond, I imagine
Drawn outside the lines of reason
Push the envelope, watch it bend

Over thinking, over analyzing, separate the body from the mind
Withering my intuition, leaving opportunities behind

Feed my will to feel this moment
Urging me to cross the line
Reaching out to embrace the random
Reaching out to embrace whatever may come

I embrace my
Desire to
I embrace my
Desire to
Feel the rhythm, to
Feel connected
Enough to step aside and
Weep like a widow, to
Feel inspired, to
Fathom the power, to
Witness the beauty, to
Bathe in the fountain, to
Swing on the spiral, to
Swing on the spiral, to
Swing on the spiral of
Our divinity and
Still be a human

(swing on the SPIRAL !)

Spiral out
Keep going
Spiral out
Keep going
Spiral out
Keep going
Spiral out!
Keep going

this song in talking about how you need to live your life through a spiral and constantly reach out to things you don`t know about (reaching out to embrace the random, reaching out to embrace whatever may come) while still keeping your ground and staying connected to your roots. Like a sprial.

Maybe you all should just listen to the music instead of analyzing every word he speaks. Least thats what the song tells me anyways.
