Classic love story true to his western tx roots. One of my favorites as a story, but I think there are alot of songs that are amazing not even listed on this site. I guess I should figure out how to add them, because I have about 8 REK cd's.

"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

We actually spent about 2 days on just this poem in a lit. class I had in school. We learned about the horse latitudes as they apply to geography and history and stuff, but then my professor had us look up the word 'horse' in the dictionary and the poem took on a whole new meaning...
'Horse' is a slang term for heroin, which we all know Jim Morrison was no stranger to. When you think about this poem as it relates to heroin, it really makes a lot of sense.

You and your class were over-analyzing the song WAY TOO MUCH!... as has been said before, JIm was not really big on everyday drug use (contrary to popular beleif) and definately did not condone Heroin use. Also, as said before, this song/poem was written when jim was still in school. About heroin?? Most doubtfull. There is more to Morrison than a drug taking hippy, broaden your mind.
