Ten years ago on a cold dark night
Someone was killed beneath the townhall light
There were few at the scene, but they all agreed
That the slayer who ran looked a lot like me
She walks these hills in a long black veil
She visits my grave when the night winds wail
Nobody knows, nobody sees, nobody knows but me

The judge said "son, what is your aliby?
If you were somewhere else, then you won't have to die."
I said not a word, though it meant my life,
For I'd been in the arms of my best friend's wife.
Oh, she walks these hills in a long black veil.
She visits my grave when the night winds wail.
Nobody knows, nobody sees, nobody knows but me.

Oh, now the scaffold is high, eternity is near
She stood in the crowd and shed not a tear
And sometimes at night when the cold winds blow
In a long black veil she cries over my bones.
She walks these hills in a long black veil
She visits my grave when the night winds wail
Nobody knows, nobody sees, nobody knows but me.

Oh, she walks these hills in a long black veil
She visits my grave when the night winds wail
Nobody knows, nobody sees, nobody knows but me.

Nobody knows. nobody knows, but me.
Nobody knows but me.

My Opinion:The version of this song done by The Chieftains is by far the most soulfull and the best - in my opinion.

General Comment:Timeless tales of forbidden love and to be sung by the greats...Johhny and Dave. This song is a true classic.

General Comment:The lyrics are pretty straightforward, but I find it more interesting than, say, something by Radiohead. I really like Radiohead, but sometimes these old songs are just haunting, although lyrically simple. They are like a window into a different time. People wouldn’t let themselves die over something like this today. We (hopefully) also wouldn’t convict, and hang somebody, on such flimsy evidence either. The belief in an afterlife was much stronger then apparently. He dies knowing that he did the right thing, and they put him to death knowing that if they screwed up it will all be ok in heaven. There’s also an element of him punishing himself here, like Jake LaMotta in Raging Bull, but much more severe. It really is an interesting song to think about.

@krazymeesen: I’ve seen several people talk about how his death was honorable, but that really isn’t true. Did you mean that you personally feel that he did the right thing by dying, or that it was honorable for people back then? I think today’s society would judge human life of greater importance than the embarrassment and dishonor to the lady involved.

General Comment:I agree with xjma. the write of the song did not kill anyone, but could not prove it as he was with the wife of his best friend when the murder occurred. Had he said that, he would have destroyed the marriage of his best friend and ruined the lives of several people. He was going to be killed one way and exhiled the other, so he chose to do the honorable thing and die while protecting his secret and the lives if his best friend and his best friend's wife. A truly moving tale.

General Comment:I first heard this on the Dave Matthews Band Listener Supported dvd. I was in tears after listening. It's a great story, and Dave sang it perfectly, with the right emotion and everything. I listened to Johnny Cash's version, then Lefy's, but nothing compares to Dave's. He just had that feeling for the song, that I didn't get from anyone else. Still though, the original writer of this song did an amazing job. I love the story.

General Comment:I recommend the Garcia/Grisman version as well. Garcia's voice adds something that I different than Cash, and DM for that matter.

General Comment:This song is a balad, a peom that tells a story.

Moolz, you seem confused about the song. The narrator did not kill anyone. The person that was killed is of no significance, other than someone is going to get blamed for it. He (the narrrator) has an alibi, his best friend's wife, but he can not use it to defend himself against a murder charge because he would rather protect his and his best friend's wife's honor. So he is hung, an innocent man, of murder at least.

She couldn't cry because she should think that he is guilty of the murder. No one knows that they were having an affair. If she cried, it would have revealed that she knew he was innocent, and the alibi would be revealed. She obviously mourns his death, hence the name of the song, she just can't do so publicly.

General Comment:i cant see how no one saw this.....the writer of these lyrics was having an affair with his best friends wife....my guess is that the husband was someone of importance because it says he was killed under the town hall lights.....this leads me to think he found out and the wife being a "somebody" ,because of her husbands power, was not to be shamed by being accused of adultry....so the writer kills her husband before the truth leaks out....because the lyrics say"Well I spoke not a word though it meant my life
for I had been in the arms, of my best friends wife "
and "she stood in the crowd and shed not a tear" also "nobody knows, nobody sees, nobody knows but me"
so this means the killer(writer) didnt say why he killed because he was in his best friends wifes arms

also she stood in the crowd watching him being sentenced to death but shed no tear...b/c she also didnt want anyone to know...

this song is soo unique because its written by a dead mans perspective.....she visits his the killers grave because they were truly in love and he died not to shame her.....so therefore she wears the long black veil for her husband ....but secretly crys for her true love who is the writer of this wonderfull song

General Comment:Dear god this song gives me chills...and IMO no one can sing it as great as DMB..He is to be worshipped, I'm telling you. :)))
Yes and the meaning I am sure is self explanatory. Died for forbidden love and he killed her husband or lover for her and she comes of course to cry over his bones..
