I've had these jeans since I was born
And now they're ripped and now they're torn
And all my friends have skateboards

I want the toys of other boys
I want a knife and a gun and things
But mom and dad will not give in

And I can't put the needle in
Can't put the needle in
I can't put the needle in
No I can't put the needle in
Can't put the needle in
Can't put the needle in

And now I know just what it is
It's called disease and it's got my head
It always runs where I hide

Too scared too talk, too scared to try
Too scared to know the reasons why
And all my friends say bye bye

And I can't put the needle in
Can't put the needle in
Can't put the needle in
No I can't put the needle in
Can't put the needle in
Can't put the needle in

And I can't put the needle in
Can't put the needle in
Can't put the needle in
No I can't put the needle in
Can't put the needle in
Can't put the needle in

General Comment:This song is about a kid who tries to fit in, wants things to look cool (clothes, knife, gun).
His friends want him to do drugs, but he is too scared to try. So he wants to be cool, but he can't/isn't, because he is too scared. And because he doesn't fit in everybody thinks he is autistic or something.

Or the autism IS the reason that he is too scared.. as Lanta says.

General Comment:I think this song is about a kid/teen-boy who tries to fit in with the crowd but he "can't put the needle in"

    General Comment:(see above post)

Also meant to say: this song simultaneously reminds me of Pink (from the Pink Floyd film "The Wall") when he's a little kid, as well as the autistic main character in Mark Haddon's novel "The Curious Incident of a Dog in the Night-time".

General Comment:This song *could* be about mental/physical illness or drug addiction I suppose... but I've always imagined its sung from the POV of a kid who's socially awkward - perhaps someone with Aspergers Syndrome or Autism. That would fit with the jeans/genes reference and the fact that, no matter how hard he tries, all his friends say "bye bye" because they see him as a freak.

Also people with Aspergers often oversensitive to pain... so if the friends are trying to get the singer to do drugs with them, this might be yet another obstacle to him being seen as part of the gang, coz unlike them, he "can't put the needle in".

Maybe Yorke was drawing on his own youthful experiences? (Not to imply that he suffers from the above condition but apparently he was mercilessly teased by other kids and was also unpopular with teachers. He was an angry young man who wanted to fight back, but was crap with his fists.

General Comment:xcats & songmeanings135 both made striking, thoughtful interpretations. They made me appreciate this song more-- even though I still don't know what it is I think it 'means'.

But why I really love the song is the chorus. How can some thing be so desperately unhappy & so catchy at once? I appreciate Radiohead more for HOW the songs are sung than WHAT is being sung. Heretical, I know!
This song is quite understated, but the style of singing has such a brilliance to it. The title is excellent, too: one of the most sardonic I've come across. I love the names of Radiohead songs :-)

General Comment:Maybe its about a boy that was raised in an overprotective fashion. Other boys can play with skateboards and fall and do other crazy stuff. In this way other kids can rip their jeans; while at the same time develop a healthy thick skin: the "jeans" that you are born with. This kid has not been allowed to play and take risks and now it's too late: he's too weak to sew himself a decent pair of jeans, because he cant put the needle in.

My Opinion:I think as well this song talks about a child born with some sort of mental disease, that doesn't allow him to be a normal kid "with a skateboard" so at that point I agree with songmeanings135...On the other hand with "I can't put the needle in" maybe he means that in a way he wants to fix those "ripped and torn" jeans/disease (by sewing them up) to be normal but he can't do it. And finally when he says "Too scared to talk, too scared to try until friends say bye bye... I think he recognizes friends and people in general always end up giving up on him because they are not able to understand him since he cant communicate his feelings...

General Comment:Okay, songmeanings135 has got it, I believe. He/she made me take another look at the jeans reference. Clever double-meaning. The disease would make so much since. Hey, do you think the chorus is about him hesitating to end his own life? The way I see it, that needle would either help him or hurt him, so it would only make sense to me if he were trying to end it all. The second stanza, I think, is him complaining. He wants to have what others have (but he can't cuz he's too sick) and then he wants a knife and a gun so he can vent out his frustrations (probably on himself) and, like the above user said, his parents would not allow or supply that method. This song is crazy deep.
