I wrapped you inside my coat
When they came to fire upon the house
I didn't feel pain
Cause no one can touch me
Now that I'm held in your smile

A beautiful girl
A beautiful girl
Can turn your world into doubt
Sell me a car that goes
Sell me a house that stands
Oh
I never cared before
I never cared before
I never cared before
Before
Before
Before

A beautiful girl
A beautiful girl
Can turn your world into doubt
A beautiful girl
A beautiful girl
Can turn you world into doubt
Yeah
I stood in front of her face
When the first bullet
Was shot

General Comment:This song talks about a hugely misunderstood facet of human experience, "limerence" or the ability to "fall in love". Apparently only about half of the population are susceptible; the other half disbelieving and contemptuous.

If you can relate to this, look up the Wikipedia page as an introduction, or get the book by Dorothy Tennov. I only found out about this by having my own comfortable, settled, happily married world turned into dust, and having to dig deep to make sense out of what was happening to me and try to reconcile it and rebuild my life.

When the first bullet was shot"?

General Comment:There's never been a statement more true than the one which comprises the chorus here.

My Interpretation:This song seems to speak of infatuation to me. When a girl comes along and a guy might not even really love her, but is infatuated with her, and she has him "under her spell". So when she walks away, it crushes the guy's spirit. Been through this situation myself, as almost every other male has, or will have at some point.

General Comment:does anyone notice that this parallel's bradbury's fahrenheit 451? ive known this song for years and that's always been my impression.

"I wrapped you inside my coat / When they came to firebomb the house"

Montag, the protagonist, is a fireman and wears a fireman's jacket, his coworkers firebomb houses.

"A beautiful girl can turn your world into dust"

After montag meets this beautiful and mysterious girl his life changes. She disappears but her presence affects him throughout the rest of the novel.

Overall its the tone of the song w/ those references + yorke being very literate and all. 1984 which inspired many radiohead songs is also a dystopian novel.

General Comment:When I first heard this song and read the lyrics, I felt Radiohead was being a bit superficial. But lo and behold, I realized that this song is intending the exact opposite. :)

General Comment:i think what he's saying is that girls who know they're beautiful know they can get any guy they like. it's the same for guys who know they're good-looking. i've only ever been screwed over by guys who are good-looking because they don't have the capacity to care about anyone but themselves, they've been told their whole lives how great they are, just because they're good-looking. likewise my guy friends always complain to me that it's the pretty girls who screw them over. don't go after the hot ones!!!!!
