In order for you to play with this record,
You must tune your guitar to ours.
We will start with the first string
We would drag ourselves to bed.
And sleep took everything I had.
I kept it up till he would call.
You made me feel like a criminal.
And then there's you,
You kept a smile though I would always walk the wire.
You gave it all.
I gave you reason to have doubt.
I had to get out of there.
I took the stairs.
I don't want to fight with you if I can't be the one to have you.
You sat that chair like a queen in the kitchen.
I memorized the lines your eyes made at every squint you shot my way.
We would drag ourselves to bed.
And sleep took everything I had.
I kept it up till he would call.
You made me feel like a criminal.
And then there's you,
You kept a smile though I would always walk the wire.
But you're miserable and I'm useless,
Always making up excuses.
I made you cry too many times.
So I'm hanging up that line.
I'm throwing rocks at your floor.
I'm knocking down your front door.
I'm desperate tonight and I just want to fight.
It's my confusion that lets me act so cold.
So now I'll go, go, go.
And you want to be just left alone.
Put down that phone, cause if you want me just call out "hey boy".

The song is sung from the perspective of the "other guy." She's with someone else, probably someone that she is losing or has lost feelings for. She's cheating with him ("you made me feel like a criminal"). It's exciting. They're up all night ("sleep took everything I had").
He wants it to be more. He wants her to be his. They're a better match. She loves him, not the other guy. He knows it. Maybe she doesn't - or perhaps she can't fully admit it. She's hesitant. His passion gives way to frustration ("I don't want to fight with you if I can't be the one to have you"). She just can't leave the other guy, and he's made his case over and over, but to no avail ("you're miserable and I'm useless").
He's tired of the debate and the pleading - he can't force her to leave the other guy ("I've made you cry too many times"). (The music picks up here - it becomes more urgent, more desperate, more passionate). He's going for broke - one final plea - an ultimatum. He drives over to her, perhaps in the middle of the night, emotionally drained but willing to lay himself down at the altar one more time. He's going to ask her one more time, and either way, this will be over. He can't continue whatever you'd call this non-relationship, so it's now all or nothing. "If you wanna be just left alone, put down that phone... but if you want me, just call out 'hey boy'."
The song abruptly ends as he awaits her reply.
I know exactly how he feels, because I've been that guy. And I ended up marrying the girl. And I love this song.
anyways, good song; i think it's just about being on and off with someone a lot, and ending up loving them so much that if they ever needed you, all they'd have to say would be "hey boy." and you'd be there.
p.s. does anyone know what the intro at the beginning is?
"I don't want to fight with you if i can't be the one to have you"
and it seems like he has to leave the place fast, maybe he was just about to get caught:
"i had to get out of there, i took the stairs"
just a thought.
"just call out HEY BOY!"
Damn Lifetime, just is so good they make my balls tingle.
