Spent 18 hours waiting stoned for space
I spent the same 18 hours in the same damn place
I'm on a road shaped like a figure 8
I'm going nowhere, but I'm guaranteed to be late

You go out like a riptide
You know that ball has no sides
You're an angel with an amber halo
Black hair and the devil's pitchfork
Wind-up anger with the endless view of
The ground's colorful patchwork
How have you been?
How have you been?
How have you?
How have you?

I drove around for hours, I drove around for days
I drove around for months and years and never went no place
We're on a pass, we're on pass
I stopped for gas, but where could place be
To pay for gas to drive around
Around the Interstate 8

You go out like a riptide
You know that ball has no sides
You're an angel with an amber halo
Black hair and the devil's pitchfork
Wind-up anger with the endless view of
The ground's colorful patchwork
How have you been?
How have you been?
How have you?
How have you?

My Interpretation:I believe this song is in fact about love.
I must point out that it sounds like he says
"How have you been, How have you been,
I'll have you, I'll have you."

The colorful patch work lyric to me means that it has been going on for years,
through many changes of seasons, being literal to weather or changes in personality.

But who cares what it means, It is an awesome song.

My Interpretation:Driving a road shaped like a figure eight?
It's infinity. A figure eight -- infinity. Forever and ever, amen.
Doing the very same thing, the very same way, all day, every day for years.
    It's life, guys.
Going nowhere? Guaranteed late? Same stress we all put on every pointless situation, from miserable high school to mediocre job to death. Life.

General Comment:I wonder why he laughs or chuckles in between "years" and "never"

General Comment:It's all about internal conflict. Sounds like a struggle with addiction to me. You start headed down a path you think is straight and narrow, trying to escape the pain, but the road curves on both ends and brings you back around to the addiction you're trying to flee. You're both the angel and devil on each shoulder, one driving you to good, to do better, the other bringing you back to the bad. You drive and drive, and end up in the same damn place, you have to be smart enough to get off the road entirely.

General Comment: This song is about his drug addiction...His life is going nowhere (the interstate 8) Hes been doing drugs for days, weeks, months, years and hes going nowhere with his life. I belive alot of modest mouse lyrics are about drugs.

Thats my interpretation of this song

General Comment:I think this song is about marijuana. "Spent 18 hours waiting stoned for space
I spent the same 18 hours in the same damn place"

    Getting stoned and doing nothing.

    "I'm on a road shaped like a figure 8
I'm going nowhere, but I'm guaranteed to be late"

Going on burn cruises to just smoke. You have a way to go already planned out. you are going no where but will end up getting back late.

"You go out like a riptide
You know that ball has no sides"

When i think of weed and a riptide. I put it together like this. When you breathe in its like the water coming in. And when you exhale it comes rushing out like a riptide. Weed drains the energy out of most people and leaves them helpless.

A ball with no sides is no fun. Like someone who is stoned and just sitting around.

But this is just my thoughts on the song. I love this song a lot and you guys are welcome to rip apart my comments haha.
